Vacancy for a coach to challenge O’Neill orthodoxy

914

If/when minds at Celtic get around to considering a replacement for Alan Thompson it would also be wise to recognise the international nature of the game.  Lennon, Mjallby, Parker and Thompson were all football sons of Martin O’Neill, rooted in the domestic tradition of the game (even the Swede).

Football philosophy drifts slowly between national boundaries carried by successful coaches and players.  Right now the ambitious teams in the world are trying to ape the Barcelona/Spain model, the success of which is hard to argue with, but whether we look for a Spanish influence or not, we must surely look for a voice to challenge what the current management team regard as orthodoxy, in all aspects of the job.

  1. I never understood just cos we got humped by some team and WGS said we were great that the hardcore fans hated it.

Every manger under the sun backs his team when they are shite, it’s a default option protect players develop a us against them attitude, WGS never even did anything revolutionary yet the fans didn’t like it.

    At last, some sense!

I know a LOT of Celtic supporters, and not one (certainly not in my earshot) ever even mentioned WGS’s background/religion.

The fact is he is an effective manager who can organise underdogs against better opposition and gain some good results (hence CL last 16), but his football was on the whole “unimaginitive” (and that’s being kind).

Over his 4 years he signed or had at his disposal midfielders like Petrov, Nakamura, Jarosik, Gravesen, Sno, Thompson, Crosas, Robson, Hartley, Donati, Maloney, McGeady, Lennon and Keane, yet never got a combination that really excited. His misuse of Shunsuke Nakamura as a winger was a particular crime. The thought of Gary Caldwell playing the “pivote” role in matches against SPL position still saddens me.

Having said all that, he has never had a bad word to say about the club, and I hope he’ll always be welcomed back as a fan.

  6. His misuse of Naka?

Many clubs over europe used wingers on their opposite wings, and the fact Naka was probably our best player in the years he was here playing on the right didn’t do him much harm.

  8. Proportionate……

Todays phrase of note, last week it was Quantum and before that Incubator Company.

Lets look at proportionate in relation to Jim Traynors ludicrous statement that a one year Scottish Cup Ban is an appropriate punishment for Rangers year of serial cheating, tax dodging and conning of suppliers and opponents alike.

Now if Rangers had merely been guilty of an amateur official missing off one of two dates on a players contract then a £100,000 fine and a years ban would have been in line with Spartans, even though the damage to Spartans was financially much more severe

Spartans in 2010 had retained reserves of £10,546. Thats approximately 3 days wages for Steven Davis. The same Steven Davis who has played the bulk of his career for Rangers whilst illegally registered

To put Spartans in context they are an amateur club, dependent on volunteers. As their balance sheet shows they are a tiny operation, however they are a credit in the role they play in their community. They have a Seniors section, a community football academy , a youth section and a women and girls section. Their error was just that….an error. A trivial one.

However RULES ARE RULES as Rangers are keen to point out and Spartans broke one and paid a very hefty penalty. They were fined 38% of the entire value of their balance sheet. They were also denied a tie with Partick Thistle which would likely have drawn a crowd of 4,000 and gate receipts of £60,000, of which Spartans would have received approx 40%

That lost £24,000 was more than double the full retained reserves .

Thats the severity of the punishment the SFA meted out to Spartans.

To treat Rangers proportionately would have required a fine of £27 million. Now whilst that would have been ludicrous for a trivial error, it does emphasize how severely Spartans were dealt with. Rangers of course have not committed trivial errors, they are at the opposite end of the charge sheet from Spartans

For Traynor to suggest the same punishment for Rangers is mind boggling even by the standards he has set in the past. It won’t have escaped anyone that 2 days after Charles Green tells us that a Scottish Cup ban would be a very severe punishment, that Traynor , who is no stranger to Rangers owners setting his agenda for him, trumpets this as appropriate.

Lets be in no doubt here. A Scottish Cup ban is a nothing punishment for a series of offences which are extremely serious in nature and deliberate in execution.

Silver city Neil Lennon – na mate.

Im LOVING this slow and painful death.

Lets face it, weather it’s in the 1st 3rd or SPL…. I geuss the vast majority on here expect them to be around in some form.

As soon as they are fatally struck, the salvage job begins.

And the “we will be back stronger than ever” rubbish begins.

I loathed thier ways during thier tainted 9 IAR. They certainly never missed an opportunity to rub it in.

So I have a lot of pleasure yet to come in this one.

if it hadn’t been for the public circus that has been going on since Feb people would have been able to carry on distorting the facts, and painting them as brokers of dignity etc.

And now thier fans, boardroom and management alike have been shown to be the gutter rats that they all are.

Bigotry is rife, and violence and anarchy is all they are bringing to the table.

    Death becomes them?

Couldn’t happen to a nicer club.

I feel sorry for the real supporter like Edward on here. Unfortunately for ed an his like, they are the minority.

And thier majority is rearing its ugly head in recent months.

And the whole world can see it now.

    No more rangers.

    Stripped of titles.

and the whole organizations mask is removed for all to see.

    Carlsberg dont do funerals…..

For Japan, playing at a better level than the SPL, Naka was a central midfielder/playmaker. We never saw the best of him on the wing.

Look at how Neil Lennon has changed the formation recently to let Commons move inside. That’s what I’m talking about.

I would like to think we would show all ex players and managers respect.

  19. the_huddle

Do you remember Naka’s first game? Ran riot in a free role. A lot of players had great debuts under WGS (even the much-maligned Willo Flood) but soon succumbed to the general torpor.

  20. Nah, just some ex players/managers. But WGS just be well up the top of the list of exs we let back into the bed :O)

  21. Was a Naka a success or failure with us? That’s all that matters, WGS put out a team to win. Some didn’t like it but it was successful.

Naka in the free role what would we have won?

  22. We also complain on here about our midfielders getting kicked all over the place without protection from the MIB, what makes you think Naka in the middle would’ve been different.

  23. !!Bada Bing!! on

WGS treatment of Thompson,Sutton,Balde,Agathe and a few others when he arrived still annoys me.Bring your own guys in sure, but these players raised us to a level to where we hadn’t been for generations, and IMO had earned the respect to be treated better.Chris Sutton could have played CB for 3 or 4 seasons ,with a dinner suit on in the SPL,crying out for Bobo to strengthen the defence,Thommo could have played a couple of seasons longer too.The reasons were probably the downsizing which was part of his remit. His record is there for all to see,the “Celtic Minded” stuff was divisive garbage from the MSM IMO.Never said a bad word about CFC ,and some others could have done the same.

  24. WGS like MON was perhaps too attached to his preferred playing system

WGS stuck too rigidly to 4-4-2

Hiis wide players were expected to stay wide

This placed far too great a strain on the two central midfielders – who were expected to be box to box for 90 minutes

The lack of cover for the two centre backs also made them more vulnerable

That said he won three titles against overwhelming hun odds

His treatment of the media was fine by me.

Not true on Agathe – he became, and I shall use an allegedly here, somewhat ‘unprofessional’ and WGS alluded to it at the time (I just can’t recall his exact words). Chris Sutton was a hero of mine but struggled with I think an eye problem which later saw him play very few games for Villa. Thompson too struggled with injuries latterly in his Celtic career. Bobo, well I don’t know if we’ll hear the full story due to the alleged confidentiality clause but he was older and slower later on. I really don’t think, from what we know, that WGS treated any of those badly, and I don’t recall any saying anything disrespectful about WGS.

And that is why WGS is a manager and not you :O) All those players were past yet we just didn’t want to admit, sure we could’ve carried a few for sentimental reasons but Sutton for 4 years, god that would’ve been a horror show.

just about sums up my thoughts on Strachan. It’s far too easy to blame the daily record or the sun for influencing opinion.(not surprised it was TTTT who brought up this nonsense). The, at times, turgid(copyright TheOriginalSadiesBhoy!) football was there for all to see but overall he was a massive success.

What I will say is, he may not have arrived a Celtic man but he certainly left one and continues to be one.
