Vacancy for a coach to challenge O’Neill orthodoxy

914

If/when minds at Celtic get around to considering a replacement for Alan Thompson it would also be wise to recognise the international nature of the game.  Lennon, Mjallby, Parker and Thompson were all football sons of Martin O’Neill, rooted in the domestic tradition of the game (even the Swede).

Football philosophy drifts slowly between national boundaries carried by successful coaches and players.  Right now the ambitious teams in the world are trying to ape the Barcelona/Spain model, the success of which is hard to argue with, but whether we look for a Spanish influence or not, we must surely look for a voice to challenge what the current management team regard as orthodoxy, in all aspects of the job.

Think he is a Hartson type player, built like smokin Joe, believe he is a free agent due to relegation!

Kingoh – that’s a given! And vice versa!

I was a fan of WGS, but I lost the plot with him when I heard the team selection for the last home game against Motherwell in the TB Thursday season. We all knew that the midfield was wrong, but he doggedly stuck to his guns and we lost 1-0.

Along with many others I thought the title was gone.

Due to a combination of circumstances, we then ended up with Robson/Hartley in centre mid and we got Naka back from injury. The rest is history!

You’re right that it was time for change in the case of both managers.

    I love them both!

    Good night.

My last word on WGS. As someone of more mature years I saw him play against us several times. He was a gifted player who could hurt you (and did) but he also had a gallus attitude that a lot of winners have. you would love him if he was in your team but you would hate him if he wasn’t.

My feeling is that a lot of Celtic fans couldn’t separate Strachan the Aberdeen player from Strachan the Celtic manager.

  9. I plead guilty to the crime of bringing up WGS on this blog today…

    I am somewhat bemused..

Around Christmas,it was confirmed that there had been discussions between WGS and Celtic FC,with a view to bringing him back in a defined role within the coaching set-up…

It was suggested that an agreement was almost achieved, but the role did not quite fit in with his other pre-existing commitments…presumably his outstanding football punditry…which is on a par with Ron Atkinson…

Anyway, there seemed to be a positive reaction to these revelations on the pages of CQN…at the time.

So,with NL now having established himself as a successful manager in his own right, and in a better place in his personal life…it would seem an optimum time to bring WGS back in….there is much work to be done this Summer to ensure that Celtic are properly prepared for the CL prelims…and qualification will be no easy task…

I could see WGS coming in and helping the coaching squad, then moving up to a part-time Director of Football/Scouting role, which would allow him to maintain his media interests…

And of course, tomato or carrot juice would be the order of the day,at the Friday Night Card School….

Now about the ‘Songs Debate,I was thinking…….

I will say that the majority of guys on my bus had more respect for WGS as a manager than they do for Lenny. They love Lenny as a man but don’t rate him as manager. They may not have particularly liked Strachan as a man but they rated him as a manager.

  13. NL needed a WGS when he first started, as witness at that crap in the fist season, but he survived the bolllocks and won the league, NL has been thru more than any other manager can teach so doesn’t need another Scottish manager mentor type, that time had past (passed) :O)

  22. Re: WGS – Many moons ago I was a guest at Falkirk vs Celtic and was asked if I wanted to watch the press conference. Aye said I.

Had to watch thru a gap in some curtains but i could see most of the press and more importantly the interviewees. Some guy said that WGS was coming on next but he would only talk about the game and not about the Aiden McGeadie situation. (The meeja were giving it big licks about a rift between WGS & Aiden at this time).

Anyhow, on comes WGS and he says “hello gentlemen, first question?”

Up pipes Smug Keevins – “Gordon, any truth in the rumour that Aiden McGeadie has asked for a transfer?”

WGS shakes his head, pushes his chair back and leaves. Uproar.

Did he handle the press well on that occasion? Did Smug abuse his position and get the rise/storyline that he wanted? Would he have asked the same of the Myth. Dunno to the first two, but probably NO to the third.

  24. I have never read WGS biography.

Does anyone know the reason his transfer from Dundee to Celtic fell through..?

It had been well signposted in the weeks beforehand, and there had appeared to be a willingness on both sides…

In fact,I recall a newspaper headline, which turned out to be premature..”Strachan signs for Celtic…..£40,000…”.

Would have become a legendary player for us……
