Vacancy for a coach to challenge O’Neill orthodoxy

914

If/when minds at Celtic get around to considering a replacement for Alan Thompson it would also be wise to recognise the international nature of the game.  Lennon, Mjallby, Parker and Thompson were all football sons of Martin O’Neill, rooted in the domestic tradition of the game (even the Swede).

Football philosophy drifts slowly between national boundaries carried by successful coaches and players.  Right now the ambitious teams in the world are trying to ape the Barcelona/Spain model, the success of which is hard to argue with, but whether we look for a Spanish influence or not, we must surely look for a voice to challenge what the current management team regard as orthodoxy, in all aspects of the job.

  3. As a man I liked WGS.

I am and was not interested in his non football background and I believe the vast majority of Celtic fans feel/felt likewise.

I liked the way he handled MSM.

I like to hear his comments in soccer punditry on the telly.

I believe he fell in love with us when he joined the club.

I think he did remarkably well to achieve what he did with the club and with the resources available to him.

I do not believe he achieved the success by playing football the Glasgow Celtic way.

Too slow build up play ( a characteristic we still display at times as allows the opposition to organise and regroup ).

    Generally Little flair.

But as a man I like him. Not my cup of team as a Celtic manager as not playing football the Celtic way.

Spot on re WGS, words cannot describe his fondness for Tommy Burns and at the time of Tommy’s passing his heart bled. WGS Celtic legend !

Also Thompson vs Broonie we won that battle, quite evident when he took the dive against us when Big Sammy never touched him

WGS wouldn’t talk about the game in the hotel after Artmedia? Good. Nor should he, no matter how much fans have paid. I’ve never expected anything like that after any game, home, away, European.

  11. Simple though why do you care what he said to the press?

If he said we are going to sign Henry from Arsenal to win us the SPL would you have loved him?

  12. lennon’s passion

Apologies, got wrong end of the stick. As others have said though, I’d back him over the press any day of the week – I did so at the time, and even more so what we know now. He was very, very good with English press while with us. No coincidence.

  13. Gordon Strachan:

The right man at the right time.

Anyone taking over the MON dressing room was accepting a poison chalice. It needed someone stubborn and single minded.

A man with the right approach to the MSM not just in Scotland, but in the UK. He doesn’t suffer fools or their asinine questions, they are just more aggressively asinine in Scottish journalism.

He grew into a Celtic man because of that aggression, the support and Tommy Burns IMO.

Anyone who cared to listen to him, carefully and objectively over the years would understand that.

Gordon Strachan for President of the SFA and then Uefa.

  14. Apart from the thought above, here’s another one for today :

“There’s a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious-makes you so sick at heart-that you can’t take part. You can’t even passively take part. And you’ve got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you’ve got to make it stop. And you’ve indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you’re free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!” – Mario Savio

  15. I was at the game in Amsterdam when Ajax beat us 3 – 0. We were staying in the Krasnapolsky Hotel and after the game Jock Stein came into the foyer looking for Lou Macari and Bertie Auld. I asked him for his autograph I was told to something off.

It took me years to understand that stress and disappointment are a potent mix. I never held it against the big man and if he had ever asked me to sign an autograph for him I would have obliged with a smile.

Any manager who dances and sins and celebrates after a big defeat is a gable end.

Jock Stein you are immortal. Gordon Strachan is a gem but not a teetotaller.

    Once a Tim…

And, seemingly keen not to exacerbate an already difficult situation, Thompson last night had his solicitors release a statement that appeared to act as an olive branch to his former employers.

It read: ‘Alan Thompson has been dismissed by Celtic Football Club after enjoying years of first-class football both as a player and first-team coach.

‘This included playing at the very highest level, both domestically and in Europe, then coaching the first team to become league champions.

‘He is profoundly disappointed, given his strong feelings for the club, but remains deeply proud of his long and successful association with Celtic.

‘Legal action has been instructed and is at a preliminary stage, however, Alan wishes this all be to be resolved amicably with Celtic, given his acknowledged feelings for the club.’

    …Always a Tim.

In the meantime, SFA chief executive Stewart Regan is anticipating “plenty to discuss” at Wednesday’s AGM.

He tweeted earlier on Tuesday: “Back up the road tonight. Scottish FA Board Meeting in the morning followed by AGM. Plenty to discuss, that’s for sure! We’ll have prawn sandwiches w/Avocado and discuss whose going where oan holiday. All eyes on Campbell. We’re thinking Bermuda for him. Try not to force any issues on next years fixture list. You know how volatile that can be. We’ll listen with careful consideration what everyone has to say representing their respective teams even Celtic. Then at the end of the day we’ll postpone

the decision making process for as long as my lawyers tell me is legal. Ta ta for noo!”
