Vacancy for a coach to challenge O’Neill orthodoxy

914

If/when minds at Celtic get around to considering a replacement for Alan Thompson it would also be wise to recognise the international nature of the game.  Lennon, Mjallby, Parker and Thompson were all football sons of Martin O’Neill, rooted in the domestic tradition of the game (even the Swede).

Football philosophy drifts slowly between national boundaries carried by successful coaches and players.  Right now the ambitious teams in the world are trying to ape the Barcelona/Spain model, the success of which is hard to argue with, but whether we look for a Spanish influence or not, we must surely look for a voice to challenge what the current management team regard as orthodoxy, in all aspects of the job.

That story about that incident at Easter Road captures beautifully the many and varied injustices carried out by Scottish referees down through the years. It will be retold to future generations of Celtic supporters.

    Their end is nigh.

    As the Arabs say,

“The nature of rain is the same, but it makes thorns grow in the marshes and flowers in the gardens”

They Dundee United fans are a wise bunch.

    PS

Are there are a lot of marshes in Dundee? A city of gardeners? It conjures up exotic images. I’ve spent little time in the city- only briefly passed through going to Tannadice/Dens…I now have a deep yearning to visit that great city of exotic gardens & wondrous marshes.

I’ve just spent 30mins looking for the ‘internet quote’ from the Hibs player involved in that penalty incident, but can’t seem to find it. Also not 100% sure if the quote is genuine or not, in a way I’d hate it to be true as I don’t want anybody cheating to help us win anything.

The Hibs player was Irish international Alan O’Brien. It was his last game for Hibs and as a Celtic fan allegedly fouled Nakamura in the 93rd minute of the 0-0 draw.

I remember watching the game and at the time thinking it was such a blatant foul the Hibs player must have meant it and I couldn’t believe Iain Brines never gave it.

The more sinister honest mistake took place seconds after it though.

After O’Brien fouled Naka in the box, he got up and seeing the ref wave play on, chased the ball to the corner flag. At this point the TV camera’s focused on Brines as he put the whistle to his mouth. It was now the 93rd minute and only 3 minutes had been added.

As Brines was about to blow for fulltime O’Brien punted the ball to the halfway line where it was 2 on 2, so Brines removed the whistle from his mouth to allow Hibs to attack us.

Unfortunately for Brines a Hibs player was offside.

So one last chance for us to send a high ball into their box…..maybe not as Brines blew for fulltime as we took the freekick.

Although we were poor for most of the 2nd half of that season, it was definitely that season that operation save the hun started.

  10. The Green & Blue Knights? Does this mean they will now adopt a fetching aquamarine/turquoise hue in their quest to become ever more attractive to the orc eye?

    Oh,the wee devils!

    :-))

  11. Agent Craig “Green and” Whyte!!

Sounds suspect to me. If it were me, I certainly wouldn’t have left it until the 93rd minute to attempt to give away a penalty.

I’d have done it much earlier so that if it not given I’d be able to try again later.

Gossip is a terrible thing. Chinese whispers are not a reliable resource of information. I pay no heed to this type of sordid s*** stirring. We should give AT the dignity he deserves without sullying his name with cheap yarns.

But then we should expect this type of fish s**t to be floating around the Glasgow fishbowl.

My defining memory of that hibs game was just before half time.

    No it was 100% O’Brien.

There was a quote from him ( allegedly ) on some website a few years back, it may have been a Celtic forum, I can’t find it just now.

I don’t know if its true but the foul did look ‘meant’.
