Value of Ledley’s back post goals

764

Celtic didn’t hit the heights of last week’s win at Tynecastle against Inverness last night but it was a remarkably controlled win nonetheless.  The game could have been over as a contest in the opening minutes but as the lead didn’t extend beyond a single goal the contest retained an edge.

Daniel Majstorovic was incorrectly penalised when he correctly challenged for the ball 25 yards from goal but the Swede’s lax initial response to the forward ball created the situation that resulted in his red card.  Dan had a painful game against Inverness last season but after they were reduced to 10 men Celtic were far too composed to let Inverness’ numerical advantage count.

We’ve spoken about the value of goals from midfield in recent seasons.  Kris Commons lit up Celtic’s season when he arrived in a flurry of goals last year but Joe Ledley’s efforts from the back post this season could prove to be even more important.

listening to Snyde podcast, caller comes on asking Darrell king

to explain his allegation regarding huns having 2 contracts, king then clears things up by saying he never said this was the case at all and he didn’t know if it was true, have a listen

I heard him say this. If I remember right he previously said that he’d seen them.

CRC – as I said to TET, I’ve mentioned a couple of points @ 23:32. There’s a lot we can do before CW attempts to pull the plug on Old Huns. If all the objections come from Celtic fans, then it just looks like payback for Murray trying to end us before Fergus showed up and all the other pain he subjected us to.

Why are we not scare-mongering about clubs having their credit facilities withdrawn….no overdraft = no cashflow = no club!

We need to lobby UEFA and we have an ally on the FFP team.

Our board could let it be known that we will refuse to recognise any Newco Hun, refuse to play them and take the 12 point hit (we gave them a 15 point start this season FFS!), although the SPL/SFA would try and hit us harder than that. Imagine the publicity!

That’s all before any Newco deal is done. What happens after that is another story, but we should never put ourselves in a position that our enemies would love to see us in.

    Time for bed.

CRC – you never ever back yourself into a corner.

‘Anyone who comes on here advocating that Celtic offer to resign from the SPL without a guaranteed move to another/better league could justifiably be considered a lurking Hun….or Jack Irvine!’

    Or a Bob Kelly.

Threatening to resign would remove the justification for allowing a newco huns into the SPL and would kill the plan stone dead.

TET – you only have spending power when you’re still playing competitive football.

Think about it….we can threaten to resign and blow the TV deal out the water, but what if they call our bluff?

In any other country, a club of our size would never be placed in this position, but we have many enemies in this country.

Ask yourself this, do you think Bob Kelly would take such a naive decision? Should we become a GAA team…FFS!

I’m not generally a conspiracy theorist but when it comes to Celtic and Rangers I often feel like things are happening that few of us know about.

The consequences of a Nae Hun outcome are mannifold not all good and not all bad. Factors affecting the decision will be legal , economic… And social… And certainly political.

I would love to know what if any political pressure is being exerted on HMRC and even CFC Plc.

They desperately want the Hun to survive, and in the SPL. Wouldn’t it be a huge bonus for them if Celtic lost a majority of their long term fans? If we resigned with nowhere to go, wouldn’t that be their second big bonus?

  17. There is one aspect of Barcabhoy’s post that worries me, and that is the hint of secrecy.

I was equally worried about Hugh Keevin’s opining, with smug levels of confidence, that he had had discussions with an un-named SFA/SPL insider who had told him that discussions were underway about the levels of penalties to be agreed in re-admitting the newco into the SPL.

Both events (Barca’s post and Hugh’s smugness) let us know that backroom deals are being discussed. None of the clubs or official organisations are seeking out fans’ views on the right thing to do in the event of this taking place. This seems to be a gane where only the views of officials and owners count.

They must be aware of the predominant view amongst fans of clubs that are not Rangers, that Rangers will have died when they go bust and that any new pheonix club should be treated as a new club. I am not concerned about what points penalty is attributed because any new club will not deserve any penalties, other than those naturally occuring ones of trying to find players and a ground and a league to play in and finances to guarantee they survive their early years and are allowed to grow naturally. They will be banned from Europe for 3 years as an existing rule for newly formed club but that is a general rule not a penalty aimed specifically at newco.

My only simple demand is that the new club is not seen as Rangers or Continuity Rangers, even if a vast majority of Rangers fans choose to switch their allegiance to the newco club. A simple declaration from the new owners, who obviously cannot be any of the people who contributed to the club’s management in the past decade, agreeing that this new club came into being with no history of achievement and no baggage reminiscent of the previous dead club. The simplest way to do this is to have no mention of Rangers in their club title. They can call themselves Glasgow something if they continue to play out of a leased ground such as Ibrox or Hampden, but they should not be allowed to move to Cumbernauld and call themselves North Lanark Rangers as that would send out undesirable coded messages.

Because the whole narrative will be on whether Rangers have died completely or whether they have transformed into a new identification. Precedents in Scottish Football do not offer a clear cut finality to that narrative.

Motherwell, Livingston & Dundee (twice) have undergone administration events. They all managed to do deals with their creditors and satisfied existing rules, however shamefully they treated their creditors, and no-one has the right to state that those 21st century clubs have any discontinuity with their history.

Equally, Third Lanark and Gretna went bust and no longer exist. Even though there is an amateur club with the Third Lanark name and an East of Scotland league club called Gretna 2008, they have an obvious discontinuity with their predecessor major league club and make no claim to their achievements.

So far, so clear cut. If Rangers manage to enter and exit administration by making deals with their creditors (an unlikely outcome) they deserve to be still seen as Rangers and to be allowed to continue to trade as such, just like Motherwell, Dundee & Livi.

However, there is a third category of club outcome that has muddied the waters of this narrative and that is Airdrie/ Airdrie United, where a bust club, with George Peat as Chairman and Jim Traynor as an alleged supporter, were allowed to inhabit a shell club, the Steedman Brothers’ Clydebank FC, and were allowed to continue as Airdrie United. No clear marker was laid down with that precedent, because, whether you or I see them as a new club, their supporters see themselves as Airdrieonians under another name, playing at the same ground and for the same fans. Wikipedia lists their history as beginning in 2002 and I trust the SFA records have them as a 2002 club with no claim on the previous clubs’ achievements and trophies, but their fans see it differently.

I want all Rangers fans to recognise that the club they supported has died. However they reform or whichever club they switch allegiance to, will not be Rangers, unless, of course, they follow a junior team in Cambuslang or an English club plying their trade in SFL Division 3.

By accepting newco into the SPL and allowing them to use a modified name with Rangers in the title, we are colluding with their fans in placing legitimacy in their continuity.

If the remaining 11 SPL clubs decide that this newco deserves a place in the SPL, they will be unjustly condemning one of their own clubs which occupies the relegation position, the chance to preserve their SPL status, or they will be doing a tawdry deal to deny Ross County or Dundee or Falkirk a deserved promotion.

And If Celtic FC’s representatives agree to such a tawdry deal they will bring black, burning shame on this club.

There is no TV deal with a newco, a newco is not the hun, they are a mid table nothing team.

    Look at the facts.

A newco brings nothing to the game, the TV deal is non existant, where does that leave things.

Can I clarify this no to newco vote?

As far as I can see it, Celtic have no locus and no right to stop any newco from emerging. We only have a (diluted) vote accompanied by a large commercial pressure (our fans), with which to exert influence at SPL level.

If newco decides to seek entrance into the SFL by-passing the lower league (EoS level) that Gretna 2008 went into, Celtic could not stop them. That would be an issue for SFL clubs only to vote on. Even if the SFL clubs decided to admit them at Div. 1 level, Celtic would not or could not vote against it. We could protest and threaten. We could cease to loan players out to those clubs or buy tickets to cup ties against them but we could not stop them, by strictly democratic means.

So we are reduced to saying “No to newco in the SPL”.

I’m trying to sleep hear but awe a can hear is you guys having a wee tit for tat aboot Newco this and Newco that.

Im defo NO on Newco parachuting into SPL if and when time arises.

I have sent a couple of letters to Mr Neil Doncaster the latter of which I will post for your purusal. It should give you all a template to take forward to SPL and/or Celtic and/or UEFA. Obviously you will need to amend dependant on your intended recipient/s. I will however do Mr Neil Doncaster the courtesy of not posting his replies publically and ask that you each send him a letter in order to garner his and the SPL’s view of the situation as it currently stands. The more who do the more pressure is applied.

My position with regards Celtic has changed somewhat over the last few weeks with regards how the club should deal with any Newco parachute in the event of liquidation of the Huns.

I was originally of the gungho resignation route and be damned by our own stubbornness. Although not out of the question I believe that option should be the final hand the club plays having firstly secured some form of agreement with UEFA and another league (Ireland would be my personal choice) until such time as Europe is restructured which will happen in the next 10 years IMO.

I’m with TTTT in that we play in the SPL but on the basis that we refuse to play the Newco while making our complaints to UEFA. This negates any pressure from other SPL clubs to afford Newco it’s place based on SKY deal. Take the 12 point hit and any legal action they throw at us while counter actions are raised against the SPL by us due to lack of fairness, sporting integrity and lost earning domestically and in Europe over the last 12 years our club competed on the football park and off it as a business abiding by the Rules & Regulations and Articles of Association of both the SPL and the SFA. It is us, the support, who need to make it crystal clear to the board that anything else other than this will see us act to remove them from their positions within our club no matter how long, difficult and tiring that battle will turn out to be.

I also imagine that many will decide enough is enough, and I still teeter on the precipice myself on this one, and decide not to return to CP while our PLC are institute as the entity that allowed a Newco Hun to carry on without fear and with favour. If you are one of the many who are of this opinion can I ask that if you are writing to Celtic that you add it as an option that you would be willing to consider in the event that the PLC were not seen to be acting to prevent a Newco Hun. No need at this stage to be getting one another’s backs up and drawing lines in the sand providing our enemy a victory before we start.
