Virgil’s suitors

2079

Aye, sure, Dick Advocaat would like to sign Virgil van Dijk for Sunderland.  Of course he would, but Virgil is very unlikely to go to Sunderland for a host of reasons.  Many clubs have made inquiries about Virgil but the player has an understanding with the club.

For a start, he’s going nowhere until after the Champions League qualifiers are over with, and even then, player and club have agreed that only approaches from tier-one clubs will be considered.  No disrespect intended for Sunderland, but a haul of one cup in 79 years leaves them well off the pace.

The prospect of Celtic being interested in Steven Fletcher, as reported in The Herald this morning, is unlikely to make any difference.  If Fletcher is wanted it will be for the qualifiers, there will be no quid pro quo.

Virgil has two years left on his contract and there’s little prospect of him extending his stay in Scotland, so if Celtic decide to listen to offers in late August it’ll do no harm having as many English clubs as possible bidding portions of their TV bounty for the player.  So let Sunderland bid away.

You and I have been working on the whole Mary’s Meals project for a couple of years now.  It’s not a big part of any of our lives, but what we’ve done is a big part in the lives of thousands of kids we’ll never know.

Reaching the 1 million kids fed each day figure last month has reinvigorated the charity.  It’s a worldwide phenomenon but incredibly started here in Scotland.

At midnight tonight a couple of guys will start to walk the West Highland Way, 96 miles, a 17 thousand feet ascent.  They hope to complete the journey within 24 hours.

You and I know that not every journey is completed on time, some, sadly, will never be completed……… but these two are close to hitting their £6k target figure for Mary’s Meals before they set off.  Go and give them a a couple of pounds, help drive them on to complete the task.  Every £1 you give will feed a child for a month.  A month!  Tell me you’re going to do something better today and I’ll not believe you.

Sorry I was away filling the Minx’s wine glass :-)

I’m not going to get into the GB because on here it results in pointless disagreements.

You’re quite correct though. Tomorrow they’ve organised a football tournament which highlights discrimination, whether it’s sectarianism, homophobia, sexism, racism or any other type of ‘ism’. The representatives come from a variety of social backgrounds but include teams or asylum seekers and refugees. Despite the progressive, inclusive nature of the event the only media attention that it’s attracted has been negative.

    I’m genuinely in despair.

I have an extensive family all good Celtic fans, a wide range of mates, friends, acquaintances (some of them might disagree) who are all Celtic daft, not one bhoy (or ghirl) posts on CQN, a lot of people just think “well it doesn’t effect me” so why bother, as for the OB bill it’s an easy out for people to say “no smoke without fire” I only know about it because of what I have read here, so aye it’s me that is ignorant, I have tried to pass on HT’s good intentions and met with a wall of apathy……hopefully the more “not guilty” verdicts will bring more attention than the petition which is very sad, because I would be devastated if it was one of mine that the police manage to actually convict through this nonsense law

Anyway Roy C, thankfully it’s Friday night, and not Sunday afternoon, that threw me last weekend

In this case, the activity wasn’t consensual.

The judge, surprisingly perhaps, was very lenient to the former President of the local LOL.

Do you think Negative press, I.e. today’s Herald, is a deliberate campaign by tabloid press to continue to smear Green Brigade? If so is Police Scotland involved? Only an opinion of course. I don’t want them smashing our doors down at 4.00 a.m.

Roy, cracking photo of Davie Provan and Clydebank’s Jim Fallon .

When I was growing up, Clydebank were my local team. I wasn’t allowed to go to Celtic games on my own, my dad worked a lot of Saturdays, I was allowed to go to Kilbowie to watch the Bankies.

  7. I would guess that the Stein Shankly photo is from the early 70’s – maybe a testimonial as both men are in fine spirits ?

As my wife is from the Rooney clan (yes…The one you are referring to) she wants to establish that the Benny that you are referring to is the son of Robert Rooney.

There was another Bernard (Benny) in the family, my wife’s godfather, son of Thomas Rooney, but he had different features and had no official connection with Celtic other than normal family devotion to the club.

Thanks for comments. Your thoughts and opinions strengthens my opinion. Apathy and ignorance rule the day with regards OFB.

Did Labour ever apologise for ending POW status in Ireland in 1976 which ultimately led to the deaths of 10 men on hunger strike?’

    ###

Labour abolished special category status. I believe that move was supported by all mainstream political parties. I’m not sure about the SNP, maybe they were against it, though I doubt it.

So far as I know Labour hasn’t apologised for that decision. Do you think they should? Do the SNP think they should?

I think you’re trying to say no but finding it difficult.

didn’t mean to trivialise a serious subject

It’s just, with the consensual, I just don’t get how they do it… it’s like… how do sharks mate? Or crocodiles…

On that… can you imagine a cross between a shark and a crocodile

Good evening son I hope you’re well.

I disagree with your earlier post I’m afraid. The potential of the OBAF Act could be far more damaging than tomorrow’s bigot party.

Hamiltobtim, you have your priorities right haha.

Like most of us, I don’t want us to get preferrerential treatment, just balanced reporting but it will never happen I suspect.

I agree with you about not discussing the Green Brigade more. There have been more than enough disagreements and sniping on the blog about them and other subjects.

    Hrvatski Jim, my mistake,

My dad told me Bob Rooney was Benny’s uncle and I read in a paper years ago, when Benny was at Thistle, he was Bob’s nephew.

It;s not like the press to get things wrong. lol

    Thanks for letting me know.

When Benny ran the Queens Park Cafe, ex-Celt Mike Jackson, drank in the pub occasionally. Him and Benny were great pals and Mike stayed close by. Mike had a bad limp which worsened through the years.
