Watching players on the edge

1018

I like watching a professional perform on the edge. We watched Anthony Stokes do just that at the Cup Final, where despite two superb goals from Gary Hooper, he was clearly head and shoulders above everyone else on the field. This has not always been the way for Anthony, so has too often failed to command a starting place, and live up to the form he promised all those years ago at Falkirk.

Celtic have put a contract in front of him but it will be considerably lighter than the contract Hooper has no intentions of signing. It’s very much up to Anthony now. Deliver and the riches will follow. Don’t bet against him.

Only just catching up on the somewhat demeaning promotion of a football club hiring a new team bus. Every time I see the coach/manager at that club, buses, or to be more precise, Blakey, from On the Buses comes to mind. These people lend themselves to parody so unselfishly.

Coach/Manager

Inspector Blakey

The fascinating part is, only one of the two above was trying to be ridiculous. You enjoy another day of being a Celtic fan.

was under the impression they had ‘looked into it’ as an exercise to get a little more from broadcasters. think the new spfl possibly better with regards setting up a footballing channel for all of Scotland (not just top league)

we could and should be making far more from t.v than is currently the case, we should be bold enough to tell sky etc.. to stick it, if we don’t get one 10th of all football income from uk, given that we know Scotland accounts of one 10th of their income. on current t.v deals that’s something like 100 million a year

I’ve repeatedly stated that Sevco are finished. Unless they find a sugar daddy. Dave KIng won’t fit that bill. It always surprises me that other Cqn,rs write that they are on 2 yrs away from the Spl and winning trophies. NO chance.

Tell All The Huns You Know

Twitter user Charlotte Fakes has put into the public domain a letter allegedly sent by former Rangers chief executive Martin Bain to the club’s last-but-one owner before it went into liquidation.

If the letter is genuine, Mr Bain used it to give a written promise to David Murray that he, Bain, would pay any tax or national insurance arising from a sum of £150,000 that, according to the document Charlotte Fakes has put onto the internet, he was about to receive from Murray.

The letter makes it clear that the £150,000 is to be a gift. According to the text, Bain is alleged to have said: “ … the sum of £150,000 that you are going to gift me.” It’s in the future tense, and there is no certain indication from the Charlotte documents that the “gift” ever arrived.

The date of the letter is May 31, 2009.

If the information is accurate, there are two possible reasons why Rangers chose to act in this unorthodox manner to remunerate the chief executive.

The most obvious is that a gift of £150,000 would be tax free, unless David Murray were to die within seven years of handing the money over, in which case inheritance tax would be likely to apply.

Less obvious is that, at the time, there was some resentment building among Rangers fans at the size of Bain’s salary. On September 23, 2010, The Herald published a piece of news showing Martin Bain to have been the highest-paid director at the club in the period from July 1, 2009, to June 30, 2010. His salary for that 12-month period, according to audited accounts (the Rangers ever produced) was £633,000, an increase of 35% on the previous year.

Fans’ forums from the time are full of comments claiming this was too much, especially at a time when players such as Kenny Miller were reported to be close to leaving for more money elsewhere. Miller did leave a few months later.

If the “gift” from David Murray reached Martin Bain’s bank account within a month of the letter being, purportedly, written, it would have made his salary for the 2008-2009 accounting period £618,000 rather than the £468,000 reported in the accounts.

If the information is true, Rangers fans might be shocked to learn that Bain was already close the year before to the salary level that upset them in 2009-2010. It would probably be of little consolation that the increase of 35% shown in the accounts was really only an increase of just 2.4%.

However, if Murray took more than a month to hand the “gift” over, the reported figure for Bain’s 2009-2010 salary, which upset Rangers fans when the accounts came out, is incorrect. If Charlotte’s material is genuine, the “gift” arriving after June 2009 would have made Bain’s salary for the period in question £783,000, an increase from the year before of 67%.

Rangers fans would, perhaps, be entitled to feel let down by their club and its senior people for failing to tell the truth about this issue, even to them.

    TET,

I think that Celtic are aware that the ‘model’ was broken. There’s no future in it as a policy and I don’t believe the people running our club don’t know that.

Yesterday I posted in The Herald article that it didn’t matter if they went bust. A club would reform using the same name et all and play at Ibrox and the Scottish football authorities would show them the same favour are they did for Rangers and Sevco. It did not pass moderation. I wasn’t abusive and I didn’t lie but it didn’t suit The Herald of the agenda.

  21. morrissey the 23rd

    You have said it now!

I think the only real danger to Sevco the third is disinterest from the hordes, as we know the SFA wont do SFA, how many versions can you follow, before you realise the club you loved is dead.

  28. Just to let you all know, sorry if I’ve not got back to anyone yet, I will.

Work is rubbish just now, really interfering with my blog and rabble rousing time.

You’ll be glad to know the backing is now pouring in from Celtic shareholders based on the original proposal, we will review with the intention of giving the board a bit of a push in the right direction and highlight some of the more blatant and publicised examples of cheating without mentioning any other teams, we are not interested in what teams got preferential treatment we are interested in killing off the opportunity for it to happen ever again :o)

The long and short, we want the board to be going to the SFA and telling them ‘our shareholders are giving us a hard time, because of your cheating and incompetence, we are required to request UEFA to carry out a full independent investigation into the irregularities surrounding governance decisions over the last 3 years”.

Could that be the resolution we ask the board to support ?

    What do you think ?
