We are Celtic, ambition

On Thursday I wrote Brendan Rodgers ‘will be a remarkable signing’.  One day after the event, it feels very remarkable.  Some found it so remarkable they have attempted a smile for the first time since Artmedia took the lead.  I’ve even spoken to Newco fans who were engaged by the appointment.  The aphorism, a rising tide lifts all boats, feels apt.

Some weeks ago I heard Peter Lawwell talk about the difficulty of landing a top tier manager in our current environment, however, he finished with a positive “But we are Celtic”.  People want to come here; managers, players, even tourists.  For all the Scottish game’s limits, we are Celtic, let’s not forget.

We’ve used some of that cachet to bring people to the game.  There will be more cameras, more reporters, more international media, more TV viewers and many more glutes on seats next season.  This will reflect on all.

Our media rights are worth more today than they were a week ago.  Consider for a moment how Dafabet and Magners view yesterday’s news?  For all they knew when they signed their shirt deals, we could have had Owen Coyle in charge next season, unless his auntie told them otherwise [an old CQN in-joke].

I’m pleased to hear so many comments that this is a sign of ambition, although ambition is always more nuanced than it appears.  Ambition every year is to win the league and qualify for the Champions League, that’s always the plan, whether it happens, or if it’s only half achieved.  Hopefully the ambition is loaded with a little authority this summer.

Sannabhoy asked me to pass on these comments on behalf of the Kano Foundation to the CQN community:

“To round the season off the Kano Foundation had a visit from Almore to present us with a donation from the Dublin 1916 CQN gathering on Sunday for the sum of £580.

“As you know, this event, to commemorate the Easter rising of 1916, was organised by CQNers Almore and ClogherCelt, and featured 30 CQN members among the 70 scots who travelled over to join the 120 locals at the festivities.  A brilliant time was had by all (just to rub it in to the absentees).

“On behalf of The Kano Foundation it gives us great pride and pleasure to accept this fantastic donation.  We appreciate the numerous good causes that are out there and to be beneficiaries of this, and the historically significant events it commemorates, is humbling and makes the efforts of the patrons, ambassadors, volunteers and trustees worthwhile.

“To Martin Connor and Alan Curran, who organised it, we’d just like to say, on behalf of the almost 5000 kids we have taken to Celtic Park, thank you very much.  Without support like yours we couldn’t continue to do this. Hail Hail.

“On that note, I’m away for a kip until next season – I’ll need it – we can take 2000 kids next year . HELP!!”

What a stunning community you are.  Well done.

    Was the TRFC squad ravaged by an epidemic or an unusually high injury count?

     

     

    They only had five subs on the bench and, apparently not for the first time.

     

     

    Surely they were not scrimping on appearance money and any win bonuses?

    One of my son’s pals was in the sevco end today.

     

     

    He told my son that when things kicked off, some older sev fans behind him, told their sons to stay where they were then the dads headed for the pitch.

     

     

    After their rampage in Birmingham in 1976, STV did a programme about it. They interviewed one of the Rangers fans, sorry Chelsea fans, who rioted..

     

     

    He said it was the Villa fans who started it as one of them waved an Irish flag at the the poor wee sensitive souls.

    Today’s defeat has left Dave King with no more moonbeams to sell, it’s only a matter of time before it becomes clear to the Klan there is no Europe and there will be no money for galaticos. How on earth will the Klansmen deal with being bang ordinary in the top flight?

    There was of course another post cup final pitch invasion at the 1965 League Cup final. Whilst the Celtic players paraded the cup at the Celtic end hundreds of Rangers 2012 (IL) fans swarmed on to the field and the Celtic players had to dash for the safety of the dressing room. They didn’t all make it and there is a shocking photograph of Ian Young on all fours having been confronted by an angry pitch invader.

     

     

    *I believe that Neilly Mochan and a few other Celtic players were also attacked.

     

     

    On that occasion, the Hampden blazers took swift and decisive action – they banned all future laps of honour!

     

     

    *what is also more galling was that the lap of honour was started by Real Madrid at the same venue 5 ½ years earlier and highly praised by one and all and a year prior to this the over rated Fifer who would flop down south was among the huns that did it after beating us with the match ball up his jooks.

     

     

    I was there and we all had left peacefully, and gutted on another cheating performance when a good goal was chalked off, by that time.

    Been out at a Communion all day and thanks to the wonders of social media was kept fully up to speed with the events at Hampden.

     

     

    Delighted with final score and not too surprised at the Hib’s fans going on the park at full time, they have waited a long time for this day.

     

     

    What’s this though about Chelsea fans trying to get on at the other end :-)

    Gerry, we gave my dad framed photos of the Big Billy statue and the Celtic Way and he was delighted with them .

     

     

    BP is one of the best and funniest people I have worked with.

     

     

    He really is a top bloke.

     

     

    I assured him last season if they played the sevs in the play off, the experience of big Mick, Scott McDonald and Pearson would help them as they would not be intimated playing the tribute act.
