We stand alone

1204

If you live long enough you get to hear or read just about everything. Today some in the old media are telling us Celtic and Rangers (sic) are both chasing a soon-to-be out of contract Manchester United player. The way it used to work is an agent would fly into Glasgow to see Celtic or Rangers, and make sure the other club had an option on the player their rivals were pursuing.

Anyone who thinks Newco can rival Celtic for a footballer had better consult their medication. The rules have all changed, in Glasgow, we stand alone.

Final shout for the ITUC’s 22nd minute Fifa protest tomorrow.

Today’s CQteN raffle winner, of a signed Celtic strip, is John McDonald, from table 36. If it’s the John McDonald I’ve just emailed, congratulations… If not, we’ll find you.

Today is World Down Syndrome Day. For too long those with Down’ have been stigmatised, shown a lack of human respect, or worse. The ‘does he take sugar’ days were not so long ago. World Down Syndrome Day is a about raising awareness and changing our perceptions.

Have to say I’m enjoying the Aberdeen fans’ ‘Peter Pawlett Baby’ campaign. Human League’s ‘Don’t you want me baby’ has flown up the charts on the back of delirious Aberdeen fans, celebrating their position as one of Scotland’s top two. Crazy stuff like this is how football clubs grow.

For all those who have supported Marys’ Meals over recent weeks and months, here’s a cheery video from them, with a little help from Pharrell Williams.

Seville – The Celtic Movement is another cheery wee thing.

“Somewhere around 5am and Glasgow airport is only open for Seville flights and is a sea of green and white. I’ve 80 Euros, my passport, boarding pass and a ticket in my shorts, Celtic top on, no baggage of any description. The happiest queue of all time has formed.”

he was just another BROTHER who was hard done to by? I think the word he used at his very popular after dinner speeches was, ” Fenians ” hope that cleared up my purpose of the scum bag bent ref. in more ways than one.

Hmmmmm you see that comment forms only a minor part of the article which heavily concentrates on other aspects of his life…. and in many respects it deeply misrepresents the truth ad relies heavily on innuendo of the heaviest kind.

Brian McGinlay stays round the corner from me. I know him reasonably well and his best pal on the planet is a huge Celtic fan. I also know people who knew him many many years ago who are all died in the wool Celtic fans who would never say a word against him especially when it comes to his ideas on sectarianism or the like.

As for his marriage — well of course there is another side to every tale, and like many another decent individual he has never broadcast anything about his relationship with his ex wife, their divorce or whatever.

Ever seen him do a book? A Newspaper article? or any other type of money making sensational piece of journalism about what happened to him or his private life?

No — and so what you are left with is what some clown chooses to deduce presumably without ever speaking to Brian or his wife.

He refereed 23 old firm games and NEVER sent anyone from either side off. In fact his practice was to tell both captains that if someone had a dig at an opponent, make no mistake the opponent was being given the chance to have a dig back.

The result is as printed above. No hidden agendas, no evening things up and so forth — although fans of smaller clubs have taken the view that he was an old firm referee — See Christopher Bookmyre in particular.

As for the allegations that lead to his downfall — well weren’t they just the most curious thing.

Charges brought by the police and contrary to what is stated in the article — in some cases not even taken up by the crown office at all but mysteriously leaked to the press.

I will leave you to figure out that one for yourself — and any that were taken up resulted in a case that actually collapsed altogether — yet no one charged with perjury or attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Re his after dinner speaking gigs — I have known him to help raise thousands of pounds for local football teams — and by the way his connection to Stenhousemuir is ongoing.

So then lets get to the nub of the article — “he Bragged that the gave Celtic nothing” — hmm — I have heard him speak at numerous dinners over the years and I am not sure that I would use the word brag.

I would also add that I have heard him use the line ( to a mostly Rangers supporting audience ) ” I gave Celtic nothing that night …………………. mostly because if I had have given them anything they would have beaten your lot by double figures”

Equally an old line of his is that ” so and so is a Rangers fan ………. the rest of us support a football club”.

So — no disrespect to you — but it doesn’t strike me that the article is worth much at all.

    Personally I prefer Andrex.

Trust me, what I posted is not even the tip of the tip of the iceberg, but truth and fact don’t always meet the demands of a prejudiced palate. Don’t accept what I post as gospel, copy and paste any line and google search it, see where it takes you. Often it will take you to sites that will offend you, but that is the price you have to pay.

  11. I don’t think Tony D is the big baddie that he is being made out to be, give him a wee bit of elbow room and encouragement rather than chop his feckin head off.

No offence mate but everything you post is up for support or ridicule, if you believe it is in the best interests of the Celtic Culture then you defend yourself as best you can and hopefully one or two others might come out on your side, but post nasty posts, not that I’m saying you did, because I never clicked the link, but post with sincerity as your closest friend and you won’t go too far astray.

After all, we are all Celtic Supporters.

In the 70s I sat at the same table as this clown you respect and love, and that’s up to you, at that table there was also Tommy Burns, both of them nearly went to blows because his gutter mouth comments, your loving pal not Tommy Burns, and see this wonderful pal, every game he refereed and Tommy was playing he carded him, you can think of him as your loving neighbor all you like, I saw another side to the rat that he really is, a low life a cheat and a liar, I don’t fancy living in your neighbourhood .

BMCUWP is my mate,I was referring to your dig at BRT&H ,I also thought the McGinley

article was a load of tosh, leaning heavily on his alleged homosexuality,so feck it’s 2014.

  14. Snake Plissken on

Was Brian McGinley not the ref who in 1993 with actual Rangers on a 44 match unbeaten run playing at Celtic park after Celtic scored and our players celebrating in front of the Jungle allowed Rangers to kick off right away and start bearing down on goal?

A Match won 2-1 by Celtic in the end.

For goodness sake read what I wrote again.

” I know him reasonably well” does not mean I want to be his wing man or his loving neighbour — it means I know him reasonably well.

Is he, or was he, capable in the past of saying the wrong thing or making the odd crass comment — hey don’t know him well enough to say yea or nay……. but there are lots of people who are capable of that.

My comments were directed at the article.

I have no difficulty with any article which focuses on “honest mistakes” or the likes and Brian was undoubtedly part of the refereeing cabal at the SFA who had an air of invincibility about them which existed right up until Dougiegate and probably still does…… and I have told him that.

There is a difference between pulling apart a poor article and having either no criticism at all or rose tinted specs.

I was at that game , wasn’t McGinley …. Could have been Syme , although memory is the ref was a bit shorter than Syme.

I thought McGinley was a pretty fair ref over the piece.

I worked with that referee back in the eighties, on a scale of 1 to 10 on a bad to good scale, 10 being good, I rate the guy about 2, maybe 21/2, but I have better things to occupy myself and life with than the likes of him.

  22. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan supports Oscar Knox, MacKenzie Furniss and anyone else who fights Neuroblastoma on

    TD67

Yep can live with that —- take people as you find them.

The article is still mince and inaccurate in certain ways.

I have never met Hope or Syme but both seemed useless to me.

I have met a couple of referees who I have immediately thought “Nice guy– decent guy —- but capable of being a crap ref. Like any other “profession” they become institutionally protective of their own group and get very precious of criticism that questions integrity or calls for improvement in practices and standards.

Whilst that is understandable, it goes with the territory of being a judge of any sort.

The late Harry Flowers used to say that anyone who applied to be a judge should automatically be barred from being a judge!

I have never ever understood anyone who wants to be a judge.
