We stand alone

If you live long enough you get to hear or read just about everything. Today some in the old media are telling us Celtic and Rangers (sic) are both chasing a soon-to-be out of contract Manchester United player. The way it used to work is an agent would fly into Glasgow to see Celtic or Rangers, and make sure the other club had an option on the player their rivals were pursuing.

Anyone who thinks Newco can rival Celtic for a footballer had better consult their medication. The rules have all changed, in Glasgow, we stand alone.

Final shout for the ITUC’s 22nd minute Fifa protest tomorrow.

Today’s CQteN raffle winner, of a signed Celtic strip, is John McDonald, from table 36. If it’s the John McDonald I’ve just emailed, congratulations… If not, we’ll find you.

Today is World Down Syndrome Day. For too long those with Down’ have been stigmatised, shown a lack of human respect, or worse. The ‘does he take sugar’ days were not so long ago. World Down Syndrome Day is a about raising awareness and changing our perceptions.

Have to say I’m enjoying the Aberdeen fans’ ‘Peter Pawlett Baby’ campaign. Human League’s ‘Don’t you want me baby’ has flown up the charts on the back of delirious Aberdeen fans, celebrating their position as one of Scotland’s top two. Crazy stuff like this is how football clubs grow.

For all those who have supported Marys’ Meals over recent weeks and months, here’s a cheery video from them, with a little help from Pharrell Williams.

Seville – The Celtic Movement is another cheery wee thing.

“Somewhere around 5am and Glasgow airport is only open for Seville flights and is a sea of green and white. I’ve 80 Euros, my passport, boarding pass and a ticket in my shorts, Celtic top on, no baggage of any description. The happiest queue of all time has formed.”

Irene Ireland Watt born 29/10/52. Deceased 27/05/10

Irene was my oldest sister. She was a Downs syndrome baby.

I use the term baby for although she was referred to as Auldyin in our house ,she was just as frequently referred to as The Bairn.

It wasn’t a slight it was a term of endearment.

Her wee brother introduced her to The Celtic ,putting it mildly ,she was Celtic daft.

She had a laugh that was the most joyous cackle that you could imagine,It was highly infectious,on dozens of occasions she would have a room full of people laughing till they cried, the only reason for the laughter being Irene’s own laughter.

When excited she would swear, the swearing could come in good temper or in bad.

She had several saying’s that were associated to her amongst family and friends.

Chief amongst them “Aye,that’ll be right” and ” No yer no,I’m the boss”

She loved the Alexander brothers ,Jimmy Shand ,but her special favourite was Daniel O’Donnell.

She would make a hall greet when she sung I’m nobody’s child, which was her party piece.

She loved being the centre of attention. My Mum & Dad ,and my other big sister used to take her everywhere.

She loved going to Denbeath bowling club, where she would jive till she exhausted the many dance partners who we’re always kind to her.

She liked a wee vodka and a glass of sparkling white wine, more often that not it was just lemonade or babycham, but she never realised.

She would have be fed lemonade all night then ,tell people that she was drunk.

She was the bowling club dominoes champion twice.

Won fairly and squarely,my Mum & Dad loved that.

When she won she was more triumphalist that Iain Paisley on an orange parade.

She also loved a game of cards.

I would regularly cheat her ,and she would still beat me.

She loved to sing so much ,my Mum & Dad bought her a karaoke machine for her bedroom.

Most afternoons another Celtic daft pal of Irene and my parents would come to the house, have lunch and then spend the afternoon singing Over & Over and it’s a Grand Old Team to play for.

How my maw and paw put up with it used to amaze me.

Irene was 4’6″ in her stocking soles, she had one breast ,and nine toes.

Not a day in life passed when she wasn’t checking the teletext to see where Celtic were in the league table.

If we were in front she would say ” they’ll no catch us,will they Andrew?”

If we were behind them it would be ,” they’ll slip up ,we’ll catch them?”

I would regularly wind her up ,by saying that we wouldn’t catch them,my dad would butt in ” for Christ’s sake stop winding her up.”

I can remember her playing pauldies in the street ,Kirby, doublers with a wee tennis ball against the gable end of our house.

She would often have to play on her own ,as she slowed the game down for the other kids.

She would stand on the sidelines desperate for an invite to play.

An invite that most often never came.

    Kids can be cruel.

I can remember my other big sister getting in fights ,when other kids taunted her.

    Fatty Tomati Mungo,Fatty Tomati,Mungo.

    I still hate that word.

My Mum was devastated when they discovered Irene was downs.

My Mum has lost her first born son, aged 6 weeks ,then had 2 miscarriages ,and then had Irene.

She was a strong woman.I still feel her love 14 years after she died.

There was an orange parade outside our house in Buckhaven and Irene couldn’t cross the road,my Mum took her by the hand and broke through the bands of Orangemen to get her on her way.

As a child she was regularly taunted ,my Mum would send me out to fetch her home for our tea.

    I would dread the taunting.

She was warm ,loving ,happy ,joyful ,and great company.

She would talk to complete strangers ,was continually on a diet , and would tell everyone that she was getting married.

She never new a boyfriend ,was never in love, was never kissed in a sexual way.

She loved and was loved by all that new her.

Her one and only Celtic match was the day we won the league in our centenary season against Dundee at Celtic Park.

We have such wonderful memories of her.

Our house was like The Waltons.

She would shout downstairs to my Parents.

” Night Mum ,Night Dad ”

They would holler back ” Night Auldyin”.

When I was about twenty ,I would rush back from watching Celtic ,jump in the bath ,and rush along to Bentleys in Kirkcaldy.

Irene was in my bath one of those nights ,I had to force her out of it .

    She wasn’t amused.

The next day we were all sat around the telly watching Bullseye, having our Sunday chicken dinner.

Irene started to cackle ,the whole family started to laugh.

She then said to me ” I don’t know what you’re laughing at,I peed in your bath last night before I got out of it.”

    She was something special .

As my Mum would say ” she was specially chosen by God.”

After a few shandies my Dad would sing Daddies little girl to her, another song that brings about great memories .

    Night Auldyin.

Cardiff City goalkeeper David Marshall has signed a new long-term contract until the end of the 2017-18 season.

Marshall, now in his fifth season with the Bluebirds, has been one of his side’s most consistent Premier League performers.

The 28-year-old has won 10 caps for Scotland.

“This is fantastic – we’re delighted to have been able to tie David down for the foreseeable future,” said Cardiff manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“This is welcome news ahead of Saturday’s south Wales derby and it’s great timing for him and us as we look towards the remainder of the season.

We know now that we have one of the best goalkeepers in the country committed to us for years to come

    Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

    Cardiff City manager

“We’re trying to build towards the future and David has shown that he’s one of the very best.

“I think this gives everybody at the club a boost. We know now that we have one of the best goalkeepers in the country committed to us for years to come.

“This is a signal that we are serious as to our intentions for the future and that we are committed to keeping the best players here at Cardiff City.”

Marshall has made 88 saves to date this season – more than any other Premier League goalkeeper – and has kept five clean sheets.

He signed for Cardiff City in the summer of 2009, leaving then League One club Norwich City, and has missed just one league game for the Bluebirds since November 2011.

“I’ve had a fantastic four and half years here already and I’m looking forward to enjoying many more with the club,” said Marshall.

“It’s a privilege to be part of what we’re trying to achieve and the fans have been brilliant to me from day one.

“We’ve a lot of hard work left to do this season, but we’re a confident group and have plenty of ability and belief.

“Not having my contract to think about anymore is a relief and it means I can continue focusing on helping us win football matches.”

  11. An older heid, frae Scotland, would certainly not go amiss in the Celtic dressing room. Davie, from what I can gather, was a quiet lad, his life changes means there is no way he would be now, in a Celtic dressing room. ;))
