We stand alone

If you live long enough you get to hear or read just about everything. Today some in the old media are telling us Celtic and Rangers (sic) are both chasing a soon-to-be out of contract Manchester United player. The way it used to work is an agent would fly into Glasgow to see Celtic or Rangers, and make sure the other club had an option on the player their rivals were pursuing.

Anyone who thinks Newco can rival Celtic for a footballer had better consult their medication. The rules have all changed, in Glasgow, we stand alone.

Final shout for the ITUC’s 22nd minute Fifa protest tomorrow.

Today’s CQteN raffle winner, of a signed Celtic strip, is John McDonald, from table 36. If it’s the John McDonald I’ve just emailed, congratulations… If not, we’ll find you.

Today is World Down Syndrome Day. For too long those with Down’ have been stigmatised, shown a lack of human respect, or worse. The ‘does he take sugar’ days were not so long ago. World Down Syndrome Day is a about raising awareness and changing our perceptions.

Have to say I’m enjoying the Aberdeen fans’ ‘Peter Pawlett Baby’ campaign. Human League’s ‘Don’t you want me baby’ has flown up the charts on the back of delirious Aberdeen fans, celebrating their position as one of Scotland’s top two. Crazy stuff like this is how football clubs grow.

For all those who have supported Marys’ Meals over recent weeks and months, here’s a cheery video from them, with a little help from Pharrell Williams.

Seville – The Celtic Movement is another cheery wee thing.

“Somewhere around 5am and Glasgow airport is only open for Seville flights and is a sea of green and white. I’ve 80 Euros, my passport, boarding pass and a ticket in my shorts, Celtic top on, no baggage of any description. The happiest queue of all time has formed.”

Lots of messages now starting to come back re this.

Quite a few laugh out loud moments being reported too.

Big VVD back today, so what will our midfield look like ?

Only 3 hours to see the champions play

    Hail Hail

  3. Think our old Bhoy David Marshall gonna be busy today.

Great keeper though, everyone raving about his performances in EPL this season.

Most saves of any goalie…..88 in total.

Can’t believe Big Rab got the nod in front of him at Paradise.

Love to see one of our own doing well down here but hope he picks the ball out of his net at least once today.

  5. Age giveaway here. In the late fifties I had a ticket to see Tommy Steel, then a rock n’ roller, at the old Empire. Days before he had a concert in Dundee and afterwards was mobbed by the crowd and had his arm broken. In those days it was a variety show and the last act was who you were there to see. So, when the rocker cancelled who was wheeled in to replace him – Larry Marshall! Not the best gig I’ve been to.

  6. Seem to remember McGinlay always having it in for big Roy in early 80s.

Never really rated him as a ref.My default position at that time was all Scottish refs were Orangemen or Freemasons.Maybe even both.

As a man,I have no knowledge of him but was there an alleged ‘incident’ in a public convenience in St.Vincent Street that seemed to disappear into the ether?

    Like I said……’alleged’

  7. Good Afternoon,

Maybe its just because I’m a Libra and represented by the scales.

However IMO, TD 67 is a convenient “Punch bag”. I do not agree with all his posts by any manner of means but provided he sticks to the acceptable parameters of the blog then what is the problem.?

He can sure look after himself in cyberspace and does not ask or require anybody to defend him, but nevertheless it is an observation.

Again IMO only, some of the criticism seems to verge on an un Celtic like educational snobbery.

As for alleged stories about Brian MvGinley’s private life;If it affected Celtic in any form then it is a fair point for discussion. It is a well known fact that sexual preference has been used as a form of leverage in many instances. I’m not saying that this is the case here but it has previous.

I do hope that Linda McGinley who worked for Amex at the time is happy for Brian’s successful resurrected career.

Going back to the Larry Marshall thing, I seem to remember that he drove a green Jaguar and it was tanned by the huns because of who owned it and because of its colour.

  9. Would be happy to see 0-0 stalemate between Mourinho and Wenger today.

Failing that I’d settle for an Arsenal win.

Chelsea get away with murder at home, West Brom and Aston Villa should both have ended the record this season.

Scandalous decisions from refs when classless little erse Mourinho at home.

If Izzy is out then Mulgrew will revert to LB and the midfield will be the same as at Killie. If Izzy makes it Mulgrew will replace Henderson

  12. Greenpinta…..

    Bang on mate…..

Tony Donnelly only says things the way he sees them.

Don’t always agree with him and can’t defend some of the positions he takes, but I sure as hell would defend his right to take these positions and express his views.

He’s a Celtic fan and one of us…..Give me TD67 in front of any Hun all day.

  13. Tommy Gemmell’s new book All the Best was completed late last night and will be away to the printers next week. We have been trying to add extras to our CQN books, for example in Seville – The Celtic Movement we have added an additional 32 pages of colour photographs of Celtic supporters in Seville and also the hilarious cartoons inspired by the stories of CQners.

In All the Best we have added a chapter from The Big Shot, Tommy’s first book from 1968. We selected the chapter on the games against Racing Club of Argentina who rank alongside Rapid Vienna and Rangers as the biggest rogues we have ever faced. Luckily it is unlikely that we will face any of them again!

Tommy also took a WEEK working through the questions from CQNers which were posted on here last month. Our questions amounted to around 10,000 words and his answers are even longer than that. It is a fascinating read.

We are publishing a limited edition run of this book especially for CQN and Celtic stores. The ordinary version will be available elsewhere. Tommy will personally sign every one of these limited edition copies.

If you are heading to Paradise and want a great read for the next week or so pop into the Celtic store or indeed Calton books at the Barras and pick up a copy of the Seville book. BRTH tells one story in there of one supporter caught short and I guarantee that it is the funniest three or four pages you will read all year!

Anyone not delighted with the Seville book can have their money back. It is very special.

    Enjoy the match.

  14. I second bournesouprecipe’s appraisal of Tiny Tim’s post at 19:47. Worth going back for.

  15. Heading out for the mire bus although it picks up at the inty now, my bhoy has bombed me out, going with his mates.

Likewise my daughter, she’ll be in the main stand with her friends and is over the moon the GB will be at the game.

    4-0 for me today. HH

  16. Not sure if I remember rightly, but I think Henderson played at holding midfield for most of the 1st half v Kilmarnock, then switched to a more forward role in 2nd (with Brown dropping deep) – seemed to suit him better.

Your post is up with the best I’ve read on here, it had me laughing and crying in equal measures. I really appreciate you sharing it with us, thank you.

On another matter wasn’t McGinley the referee who gave us two penalties against the Huns at Parkhead around ’86?

Chocky scored both, they pulled one back and then wee Oweny Archdeacon nipped in between Nichol and Woods to seal a 3-1 victory.

  20. Jack McGinn’s grand kid playing against us today.

    Larry Marshall.?

I am a habitual browser of charity shops. Searching for choons . Fond memories of discovering a hens teeth 45 in a posh Glasgow suburb Oxfam. The choon was Larry Marshall ——-Nanny Goat ( considered by many to be the first Reggae choon ) It was an absolute bargain ———as I stood at the counter paying ——-the purple rinsed old dear at the till opined –” I hope he is a better singer than a comedian ” . To my eternal shame , I kept schtum.
