What did we learn last night?

902

So what did we learn last night?  For a start, when we need to, we can defend effectively and shut up shop, last night was our fourth clean sheet in Europe this season.  The 4-5-1 formation, deployed for the opening 65 minutes, was not effective at producing attacking opportunities, although this may be as much to do with personnel as formation.

Emilio Izaguirre was swamped every time the ball went near him, which did little to settle his confidence.  It was wise for Neil Lennon to hook him and drop Charlie Mulgew back.  I felt sorry for Miku, who looked like a player in an unfamiliar line-up.  He is not a lone target man but will do well when we get the ball to his feet. He was only asked to play that role due to injuries Hooper, Stokes and Samaras and will only do so again under similar circumstances. By contrast, Hooper looked the part once he came on. He bullied defenders as effectively as he does in the SPL, a real pleasing point for me.

Victor Wanyama needs to improve his sharpness to make the most of his composure and tackling ability at this level.  The perpetual motion of Champions League teams means a fraction of a second off-pace can compromise the defensive formation.

Did you notice how every time Commons got the ball he was thinking “goal”? His turn before crossing from the left belied the meagre money we paid for him. He is every inch a Champions League player.

James Forrest was played out of the game by the full back. He/Neil needed to find a resolution to this challenge but it didn’t happen. He tried to knock the ball round the outside and pass on the inside a couple of times, which was over-ambitions, to say the least. I don’t think we saw him drop the shoulder and take the player on with the ball, which is a pity, as I’m sure he had the taking of his marker. Both Forrest and Wanyama will be stronger on Match Day 2.

The first objective from our return to Champions League football was that we would be able to compete at this level.  That achieved, we can look forward to Moscow in 12 days time.

‘The Green Man is a typical Yorkshireman.’

You can always tell a Yorkshireman.

But you can’t tell him much.

  4. No Bobby Does It Petta on

As already noted above, it is indeed funny how we all see the game differently.

Cannot agree with Paul’s assessment of Commons’ performance. His touch and passing let him down many times.

If anyone looked like a Champions League player, for me it was Wanyama. His strength and composure on the ball is terrific.

All the more remarkable when you consider his age and inexperience.

I have no doubt we will profit at least £10m when he goes in the next year or so.

  5. Tim Malone Will Tell on

I am a big admirer of Kris Commons and reckon that he and Samaras are the two most skillful players in the squad. However, the loss of Sammi’s pace, skill and physical presence seem to highlight the lack of pace in Kris himself.

Still, I suppose that if he hapampered as well as skill he would be plying his trade in the EPL rather than the SPL.

Thought Victor bossed midfield last night for the first 20 minutes until he got booked – his robust style is always going to attract yellow cards in Euro games unfortunately.

I thought commons was good but had his back to goal too often as we had no options up front until hooper came on. I think commons is our most productive player mind you. We could’ve done with samaras last night.

Wanyama was pretty good, would’ve been better if he hadn’t got booked early on. Brown could’ve been better on the ball but his tackling was immense, he was a man possessed!

What did we Learn from Last Night..?

Personally, I learned how to access ESPN3. I thanked you on a previous post but grateful I got your “heads up” while the replay was still available.

    Magnus

  9. What did we learn?

I was pleased we were not beaten, keeps morale high with great support from the crowd.

However I do not understand the logic which selects players who have been poor against lower level opposition and expect them to perform in the CL.

    I give you Izzy,Forrest,and Hooper.

Izzy was an exposure,JF put in one good cross, and if Hooper was as crocked as his performance on Saturday would suggest he should not have been on the bench and even worse was played with young Watt available.

    A baffling Management decision.

Too many favourities, forget sentiment,if guys are off the boil then replace, once we get 11 contributing players on the park we really will be a force to be reckoned with.

PS. Well done Scott Brown, that guy has an injury!!

  10. Thought it was a mature performance last night with the hoops not looking out of place at the highest level. Maybe one or two of the younger lads were a bit in awe, but that kind of experience can only be good. Looked like Lenny’s changes might have been a masterstroke but Benfica were a real quality outfit with a shrewd coach.

Atmosphere was absolutely incredible with the walk on and Glasgow’s green and white just sublime. Particularly moving to see ‘Ss junior take part in our amazing tribute to the 96

“..Hooper looked the part once he came on.”

No, he did not. He looked laboured, overweight and most of the time appeared half asleep.

Funny how we can all watch the same game and yet have compelely different opinions. Perception is reality as a clever man once said to me and perception can be influenced by preconceived ideas, opinions and beliefs.

For my money I thought Miku put in a shift. The service to him was poor/non-existant. I’m certain he’ll be a top player for us given some time to settle and for his teammates to get to know him as a player

I sit close to the Forster penalty ‘claim’, he defo got something on the ball before making contact with the player, good call referee. The forrest one I didn’t get such a good look at, valid claim?

  14. Afternoon fellow CQNers from a warm costa in the south of Spain living up to its name.

I was reasonably satisfied with both performance and result and both Paul and TBB have reflected my views on individual performances both great and not so good.

    Very encouraging.

Charles Greene does Scottish football, including his own club no favours. Whatever life aims to teach him and his cohorts, so far it is missing the target. Some recalibration to take into consideration the protective environment in which they sit aka swerving the machinations of SFA and msm (did Guidi really say that?) is required. Even better if reality makes them collateral damage.

Now this was typed and saved because in order to send I have to connect to the wireless network of the restaurant below. To do that I have to lean over the balcony, log in, copy paste and send. So wish me luck.

Silence thereafter means I have entered the restaurant vertically.

I thought the big keeper proved again last night that he is one of our most important players, if not the most. This was his biggest game so far and he was unfazed. For a big guy he is agile and his reactions to low shots is very good. I expect him and Victor to be the next two big money movers, and we’ll be talking minimum £15m for the pair.

  18. For what its worth can I add my personal scorecard for performance last night?

Forster – 8 Not too much to do, but safe when called upon and seems to give his defence confidence.

Matthews – 8 Good distribution and several well timed tackles. Hard to believe he is still so young (coz he looks about 30) and is still improving.

Lustig – 7 Decent performance and to me seems more comfortable in a central role.

Wilson – 8 Another good performance, seems to be improving with each passing game.

Izaguirre – 6 Nowhere near his POTY season. Poor distribution frequently leading to Benfica attacks and putting the team under pressure. Frustrating when we all know his capabilities.

Forrest – 5 Never got into the game and struggled against his marker, although to be fair was often outnumbered

Brown – 9 Very energetic performance and lead by example, solid in the tackle and rarely wasted a ball.

Wanyama – 8 Good, solid performance from Vic, particularly in the 1st half. Booking no doubt caused him to curb his efforts slightly in 2nd half

Mulgrew – 8 Again showed his ball-playing ability in a more advanced role. Comfortable in possession and linked play well on the left side.

Commons – 8 Showed his eye for goal with a couple of ambitious efforts. Rarely wasted possession and always a danger to the Benfica defence.

Miku – 7 Showed good promise, particularly when ball played to feet. Hard task as lone striker and not his normal role. More to come I’m sure!
