When close season is no more than a 3-week taper

188

If you are a distance runner, you will know that a three-week ‘taper’, when you gradually reduce training, is recommended before an event.  This will allow muscles to rest after their most fatigued period.  Three weeks is within the period that muscles do not deteriorate, so you should be both strong and rested.

It has been three weeks since the Scottish Cup Final, so the Celtic players who arrived back at Lennoxtown this morning to start preseason training will be ready for the strength training ahead.  Champions League qualifiers are a further three weeks away.  All other things being equal, that will be enough time to ensure Celtic are ready, but even the first round could present a serious challenge, so there is serious work to do this week.

What you gain in summer fitness costs you later.  Three weeks is not a proper rest period, the body needs more time to recover from the exertions of a long season.  Celtic players are not unique in this respect, but they carry a burden not shared by many others in Scotland.  We need to find fresh energy, not to mention motivation, for the challenges ahead.

The way forward could include a number of streams.

Local academy for youths within the city.

StN’s style academy for people from further afield.

Irish academy in or around Dublin to tap into that market.

East coast academy in the US to get involved with their huge “soccer” industry.

Finally a Development team based on the Brentford idea of picking 18 year olds from other teams — £2K weekly wage on a three year contract would need a wage budget of £2mill and then some. Would an 18yr old DT have made the switch last season with this set up in place?

8 / 10 players at 21 every season — with half being good enough for the first team squad and the rest moved on for some revenue.

The current situation is not working well enough — need to change.

  6. Taurangabhoy. I think I know Morningtonfenian and welcome him to CQN. He is certainly not a Hun. A good Celtic man who gets me into a lot of trouble every time we have a drink. 8. On Lustig- it will be sad if he leaves, but I fear if he is hear for another year as cover he will end up playing first team football and IMO his legs are done. He HAS been a great servant to our club, there can be no doubt about that. His experience around the dressing room will be missed, but as a club we have to move on to the next Lustig.

Some are saying that Lustig might be hinting about being treated badly by the club/fans, I wish I was paid £20-25k a week, if that is badly treated then I’m stumped. Yes we should be communicating with all employees. Anyway if he has been offered a deal then either sign or move on. Celtic will be here long after he is gone. Thanks Mika for your service.

Morningtonfenian welcome to CQN. If you had been around fifteen years ago on the blog you would have received the are you a hun welcome. Didn’t want you to feel left out. It’s a mineshafting happy clapping clique don’t ye know. Paddymacoz it was meant to be a CQN welcome. Someone had to do it. Right have we bought anyone yet. Still hoping the lack of ( public) action means we have one or three first team players coming in. It’s nine or nothing. Boom boom boom boom the ten is coming soon. Hail Hail

  20. A wee quote, picked up from Video Celts, from Martin O’Neill, might be a timely reminder to those whose views on the NFL appointment were a bit harsh:-

“I really can’t get my head around it at all because I don’t think he put a foot wrong after taking over from Brendan Rodgers.

If I get the chance, I watch Celtic games on television and I’m not sure that the season had been entirely fluent for the duration of the campaign, for one reason or another.

So it was not a given that Neil would walk in there and get it right. I think you have to be really appreciative of the kind of pressure he was under in those months — all the while as he was trying to win a Treble, which is no mean feat.

I sometimes wonder in this day and age whether there is an opinion that is as widespread as things are reported.

When I watched the Scottish Cup final I heard his name sung loudly and clearly. It didn’t seem to me that there was an issue there.”
