When clubs go bad

775

Keep an eye on what’s happening at Leeds United.  The club is under offer from ‘colourful’ Italian, Massimo Cellino, who will become owner if the Football League decide that his conviction for defrauding Italian tax authorities is not sufficient to make him an inappropriate person to control a football club.

If Cellino is declared unsuitable by authorities in England I am told to expect a coordinated media campaign to have people with similar backgrounds hounded out of the game here.  The is a dirty war underway for control of one of Scotland’s newer clubs.

Leeds have historically been a club which it’s difficult to feel sympathy for but I genuinely feel for their fans, who suffered for the lack of a director to say ‘No more money’ amid the clamour to reach ‘the next level’, whatever that was at the time.

Now they are a massive club but lose circa £15m per year, making it impossible for them to compete with clubs far smaller than them.  Being subject to the attention of convicts is a direct consequence.

On a completely unrelated matter, I read Phil Mac Giolla Bhain today use the word “Wonga” in relation to Newco Rangers’ recent attempts to finance.  That was exactly the word used to me to describe a potential financer who is set to meet the club tomorrow. The campaign to oust the club’s current owners is significantly undermining their ability to do their jobs.

Well done to Big Yogi and the Highlanders for their unconventional route to the League Cup Final.  It must have been an absolute sickener for Hearts fans to lose to nine men.  Absolute.  Utter. Sickener.  Oh well.

I read Barcelona lost on Saturday for only the fifth time when Messi had scored.  Can anyone name another occasion?

Willian booked for time wasting when leaving the pitch. Will Jose fine him for a silly booking or pat him on the back for obeying orders? Hmmmmmmm……

  2. Before Christmas heard Tom English talking to Malcolm Murray , think it was that one it’s hard to keep up but I digress , more than once Murray mentioned to the bould tom that he had a third of a century of experience in finance and knew what he was on about so I thought to myself aren’t they lucky to have someone so astute otherwise they could find themselves in a whole heap of financial trouble….this was on shortbread btw

From earlier about the top tier and Saturday. Ticket office did not mention top tier being open at all when I was in. surprisingly I was offered two upper tier main stand tickets. That was a shock as the Main stand is generally busy even when other parts of ground are empty.

  4. Greendreamz,

I don’t think we would do quite as well if we were in the EPL.

In our favour, I think we would do well at home, but the biggest challenges would be lack of depth in the squad, and, in Scotland, I think you can turn things around much quicker.

    I wouldn’t see us going down, but I think we would be 15th / 16th rather than 10th /12th.

In year two, I think we would be a bit stronger, we would lose a wee bit of the element of surprise when playing at home, but this would be compensated by more points away.

Of course, if we were in EPL, we would still have KI, Aiden, Hoops and Big Vic.

Add them to Lustig, Fraser, VVD, Izzy, Chaze, Broony and wee Jamesie and we have the base for a very good team

I was offered 2 main stand tickets today (corner flag) when picking up a parent & child combo, settled on 113 LL Lower. Got the impression there weren’t a lot of double seats left (2 together)

As much as it sticks in my throat Chelsea deserved the win.

  8. Woeful, inept Man City performance. Can’t subscribe to Chelsea being fantastic. He came for the draw and got better. Chelsea pressed and harassed a disjointed midfield, that was it. Man City are lacking in defence, have been, will be – shows up massively when they’re not free scoring.

I wasn’t aware there was any ambiguity around the H in the banner.”

Sorry, I’ve been out since last posting.

The minute you use initials you introduce an element of ambiguity in the perceiver. If you knew the intention of the banner maker, you might have a clear view. But most of us came across it at the park without any knowledge.

The H could stand for H Block

The H could stand for Hypocrisy

The H could stand for House (Stephen)

Help, Helicopter and Hospital are also denoted in sign form by a H but those seem less likely interpretations.

As a US citizen originally from North Lanarkshire, I am not familiar with the political and social issues, but I am intrigued by the educational revelation re twice as many Catholics go on to higher education.

Does this also apply in Scotland?

Could this be a reason the establishment is so intent in abolishing Catholic schools?

I grudgingly admit that Mourinho had his team well psyched up for that game tonight. They defended well and pressed well…….Joe Hart had to punt it up the field a lot of the time .

In the 70’s I sat beside a Dons fan at Pittodrie who had his teenage son with him. The sectarian bile that came out his mouth was unbelievable. One I always remember was when A Celtic player went down injured. He came out with”see that water they are giving him the papes call it Holy water so he should jumped to his feet right away” It got that bad I told if he didnt stop I was getting the police.

Timing, I’m just back on having been out/busy most of the night.

Maybe it was just me, but knowing that the banner originated in 111 and the wording beneath it, I automatically took it to represent H Block.

Or maybe knowing what lay ahead, it was hauners :-)
