When clubs go bad

775

Keep an eye on what’s happening at Leeds United.  The club is under offer from ‘colourful’ Italian, Massimo Cellino, who will become owner if the Football League decide that his conviction for defrauding Italian tax authorities is not sufficient to make him an inappropriate person to control a football club.

If Cellino is declared unsuitable by authorities in England I am told to expect a coordinated media campaign to have people with similar backgrounds hounded out of the game here.  The is a dirty war underway for control of one of Scotland’s newer clubs.

Leeds have historically been a club which it’s difficult to feel sympathy for but I genuinely feel for their fans, who suffered for the lack of a director to say ‘No more money’ amid the clamour to reach ‘the next level’, whatever that was at the time.

Now they are a massive club but lose circa £15m per year, making it impossible for them to compete with clubs far smaller than them.  Being subject to the attention of convicts is a direct consequence.

On a completely unrelated matter, I read Phil Mac Giolla Bhain today use the word “Wonga” in relation to Newco Rangers’ recent attempts to finance.  That was exactly the word used to me to describe a potential financer who is set to meet the club tomorrow. The campaign to oust the club’s current owners is significantly undermining their ability to do their jobs.

Well done to Big Yogi and the Highlanders for their unconventional route to the League Cup Final.  It must have been an absolute sickener for Hearts fans to lose to nine men.  Absolute.  Utter. Sickener.  Oh well.

I read Barcelona lost on Saturday for only the fifth time when Messi had scored.  Can anyone name another occasion?

  2. Kris Commons – The natural choice for Scotland’s player of the year

The time for the annunciation of Scottish Football’s Player of The Year is fast approaching. At the present moment there is one stand-out candidate. Celtic’s midfield ace Kris Commons has bagged an incredible 21 goals for the Glasgow giants so far this season. In this article, I take a look back over Kris Commons time in Scottish Football, his Celtic career so far and speculate on what the future may hold for Celtic’s mercurial midfielder.

When Kris Commons arrived at Celtic as part of a £300,000 move from Derby County, there was very little fanfare and there was something understated about his arrival. There was no great excitement from any large, detectable portion of the Paradise faithful. The only real discussion taking place around the signing of Commons was centered around the fact that the Glasgow mainstream sports media had been reporting in the week prior to (Commons signing for Celtic) that Rangers had been sniffing around Commons with the intention of making an offer. Some outlets reported that transfer fees and contract terms had been discussed between Commons representatives and a negotiation team from Rangers. So with Commons seemingly choosing Celtic over Rangers, it generated a slightly spicier atmosphere around Commons signing.

But like so much when Scottish Football, the media and Rangers are involved, the reality may actually have been very different. Speaking at a press conference in January 2011, Kris was pressed by a member of the gathered sports media to reveal why he had knocked back Rangers and signed for Celtic instead. Commons seemed bemused and almost confused by the question and quickly replied: “I think it was mainly talk from yourselves. There was no talk from our side. The things that went in the press – the wages, the money – was all nonsense.”

A cynic might say this was less about Kris Commons knocking back Rangers and more about some members of the press kindly linking Rangers with a move for Commons to simulate transfer activity from the Ibrox club. I know, the thought of a member of the mainstream media being a bit friendly with Walter Smith & doing some light PR to make Rangers appear “busy” in the transfer market might sound like deranged paranoia to some, but had Rangers been as serious on the transfer as the press insinuated at the time, then Commons could have been a Rangers player before Celtic even expressed an interest. This was not to pass and not only did Kris Commons suggest there was no actual or tangible discussions between him and Rangers but he quickly signed for Celtic with very little fuss.

Commons made his debut for Celtic in a CIS cup semi final against Aberdeen. He quickly scored with a fantastic chip – chipping the ball over the heads of goalkeepers would become something of a signature technique for Commons – and he revealed the level of technical proficiency and vision that would come to separate him from his peers over the coming seasons. Kris followed up his sublime goal in the cup by scoring in his Old Firm debut against Rangers at Ibrox in a 2-2 draw. Goals and assists against Rangers were always a priority for a Celtic attacker when Rangers were playing in the top flight of Scottish football. His great goalscoring form continued as Commons netted another goal and importantly, added another Old Firm goal to his already bulging account by scoring in a 3-0 win against Rangers. The midfielder finished the season with an impressive 14 goals & 6 assists in only 21 appearances. Seldom does a January signing participate in the second half of the season with the same devastating effect that Commons had displayed.

It seemed that the short and portly midfielder could come in very handy in the 10/11 title race with his creative play and desirable habit of producing an “end product” which would be invaluable in the quest for a title that had eluded Celtic the previous two seasons. Ultimately, it was not to be for Kris and Celtic that season. Celtic capitulated at Inverness and despite Commons scoring in that game, they went on to lose the match and then later, the title. Walter Smith’s men had clung to the SPL title and completed three titles in a row. Many Rangers fans selected Commons as a target for their gloating. “Bet ye wish ye donned yer brogues and joined Rangers noo!?”. It would prove, as it so often does, that those who laugh last would in fact laugh the longest.

Commons got off to an unfortunate start the following season when injury, and therefore fitness, impeded his season from the off. He ended the season with only one goal. But how typical of football that the one goal came against Celtic’s Glasgow city rivals Rangers. Celtic had been struggling until midway through that season. Languishing dangerously far behind Ally McCoist’s steadfast Rangers side as far into the campaign as November. There was many who questioned Neil Lennon and his Celtic side’s ability to come back from a large points deficit – I believe it was 15 points at its largest – and wrestle the title from a Rangers side dining out on their three in a row credentials. Celtic then mounted a spectacular comeback and sat ahead of Rangers coming out of December. Commons and Celtic went on to win the title as their unfortunate and once-proud rivals plunged into administration.

The 2012/2013 season saw Celtic go on to have one of their best seasons and go on a historic European run that culminated in a last 16 appearance in the top club competition in Europe – The UEFA Champions League. Not only did Commons play an important part in Celtic’s win over Barcelona but also the run to the elite 16, by weighing in with two goals and three assists over the European campaign.

One of these goals being a penalty against Spartak Moscow that secured Celtic’s qualification from the Champions League group stages. It requires a special kind of nerve and a different breed of professional athlete to maintain such solid composure in such a high pressure situation. Commons not only maintained his composure but also exhibited fantastic technique to convert the penalty without fuss. The left footed midfielder also played his part domestically and finished the season with a record of 46 games played, 19 goals scored and 17 assists. Common’s vision, intellect and ruthless execution from midfield was starting to mature into being of consistent value to Celtic.

The 2013/2014 season has seen Commons evolve into an entirely different level of player. His consistency across a season uninterrupted by injury and without a blemish on his disciplinary record is now the perfect platform to showcase his maturity as a pivotal player for his club. It may seem obvious that a player going from Derby County to competing against the likes of Barcelona, Ajax, Spartak Moscow, AC Milan and Juventus is going to improve as a result of the experience, but what Commons is showing now, is another type of evolution entirely.

Commons is currently sitting on 21 goals in 32 games. Such impressive goalscoring form from a midfield position is a comodity that is rare in football at the moment.

Celtic have struggled to find a consistent striking partnership or effectively replace Gary Hooper so far in the 2013/2014 season. With this, a goal drought among the present strikers could have caused Celtic much discomfort even domestically. Commons has stepped up to the mark and filled in the gap that an out-and-out striker should be filling. The increase in Commons’ goals has also seen a decrease in his assist rate. However, this is misleading and is, in fact, simply a by-product of the fact he has taken the goal scoring initiative up himself. He can hardly assist himself and is simply using his footballing intellect to help spark moves which allow the team to create opportunities for him. It is subtle, but very smart. There has been rumours and hearsay emanating from Celtic Park over the last two seasons which suggest Kris Commons could be ear-marked for a coaching role if he stays to finish his career at Celtic. When you watch the intelligence with which Commons plays the game it is hardly any type of surprise.

Commons has been the stand alone candidate for the Player of the Year Awards with the only conceivable challenge coming from the media darling, and reborn Kilmarnock striker, Kris Boyd. The simple fact is that Boyd is in a position that allows him to do what he should be doing, which is scoring goals. Commons has to set the move in motion and then calculate how to best manoeuvre himself to advance into a position to finalise the move and convert the opportunity. This is very hard to do and Commons has made this seem routine over the season thus far.

Kris Commons is getting to live every footballer’s dream at the moment. He is in the form of his life. Scoring breathtaking goals on a weekly basis and also having the comfort of knowing he will be competing against Europe’s elite clubs each season. He has the adulation and support of a huge global fanbase who have watched him grow and develop as a player and a professional. The most spectacular thing about Kris Commons time at Celtic, is his integration with the wider support network that Celtic generate, known to some as “The Celtic Family”. Kris and his family are very active around fundraising and raising awareness of various charities and this draws much appreciation on social media like Twitter and various other internet forums.

Kris has not only brought much success to Celtic, but Kris and his partner, Lisa Hague, have brought the most precious success into their own lives. They have had children and watched them grow and all under the watchful gaze of the wider Celtic support. Lisa, is not only a successful businesswoman in her own right and a proud & doting mother, but she also engages with the club’s supporters and seems at ease with the charitable spirit that Celtic strive to maintain as a cultural identifier. With the Commons family’s support of little Oscar Knox and Lisa’s role as a special ambassador for Scottish stillbirth charity SIMBA, it must be commended that Kris and his family have offered so much back to society and our city is a better place for having such a kind and loving family as part of it.

It seems Kris Commons and his family have the perfect life. If a coaching role was to creep up for Kris over the next two or three years then surely it would be something he would consider. His contribution to Celtic, Scottish football & Scottish society is something that should be praised. Such professionalism, openness and charitable spirit is always welcome in the vortex of insanity that this city generates.

Kris Commons is only 30 years old. His career tally at Celtic is currently 132 games played, 55 goals scored and 42 assists. Quite a remarkable return for a short and stout £300,000 midfielder.

Commons has scored goals in almost all of his competition debuts. His early career had him routinely banging in goals against Rangers. He has scored in Europe & offered even more assists. He has scored high pressure goals which have sent his team into the elite 16 clubs in Europe. He has done this all over a sustained and continuing period and shown incredible growth as a player. 2013/2014 has seen him evolve to a whole new level and with a return of 21 goals from midfield so far, if he continues this form, he will be the obvious candidate for a player of the year award.

But then, this is Scottish football so you just never truly know.

  3. Scottish football legend Kenny Dalglish has called for the missile-throwing yobs who attacked Neil Lennon to end up behind bars.

The Celtic manager was forced to abandon a scouting mission at Tynecastle on Saturday after a coin and a drink were thrown at him by Aberdeen fans during their League Cup semi-final win over St Johnstone.

Lennon then cast doubt over his long-term future in Scottish football by admitting there could come a time when he decides enough is enough in the face of such abuse.

Missile attack: Neil Lennon salutes Celtic fans – he was pelted by objects while watching a League Cup game between Aberdeen and St Johnstone

Neil Lennon on the abuse he suffered at League Cup semi-final

Parkhead great Dalglish does not believe Lennon will walk away from his job, but expects the authorities to catch the perpetrators and send out a strong message.

‘I don’t think it will come to that,’ he said, of the possibility of Lennon leaving. ‘Because surely the people who organise the security at the grounds will have enough video footage to identify the culprits, get them in, bang them up, let them suffer. It’s in their hands more than anybody elses.’

Dalglish, who had a brief spell in the Celtic hotseat in 2000, added: ‘I never experienced anything like that. I don’t know why I never or why Neil did, I just know I never had it.

Hard line: Former Celtic manager Kenny Dalglish has urged authorities to put the culprits behind bars

‘It is just not acceptable, for anyone, for any manager. If it was a player, they would scrutinise the video tapes to get the culprits. Let’s hope they do the same and punish them severely.

‘Neil has done a fantastic job for Celtic. I don’t think anybody can dispute that.

‘It’s a shame we’re talking about it. We should let it settle and let the police get on with it and get the guys done. That then puts everybody else off doing it.’ Lennon was infamously attacked by a Hearts fan while in the dugout at Tynecastle in 2011, but admitted he had hoped that kind of alarming incident had been consigned to the past.

Aberdeen have urged fans to help identify those responsible on Saturday, while SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster issued an apology to Lennon as the governing body is responsible for organising the League Cup.

Don’t go! Dalglish hopes that Lennon will not be forced to leave Parkhead because of the abuse

Celtic meanwhile will not face any disciplinary action over a banner displayed by a section of fans during their home league game with Aberdeen in November.

The SPFL spent three months investigating the parading of a giant H accompanied by the message ‘they fought and died for their wee bit hill and glen’.

However, the league have ruled there is no evidence to suggest their rules were breached in the incident.

Celtic condemned the display of the banner, saying they had not been approved by the club and were not welcome within the stadium. Just three days after the ‘H’ banner was flown, the club were in trouble again after the same section of fans unfurled images of William Wallace and Bobby Sands before a Champions League game with AC Milan.

Sign language: Celtic were fined £42,000 for displaying William Wallace and Bobby Sands at a Champions League match against AC Milan

    UEFA subsequently fined Celtic £42,000.

In a statement last night, the SPFL said: ‘Celtic were able to demonstrate they had taken all reasonably practicable steps to prevent the banner being displayed at Celtic Park.

‘As a result, it was determined there was no evidence of any breach of SPFL’s Rules by Celtic FC.’

  4. DEREK MCINNES has slammed the Aberdeen supporters who targeted Neil Lennon and took some of the shine off the club’s League Cup semi-final triumph.

McInnes has slammed the fans who abused Neil Lennon [ROSS TURPIE]

The Dons booked their first cup final appearance in 14 years with a 4-0 thumping of St Johnstone at Tynecastle.

However, watching Celtic boss Lennon was forced to leave the game early after missiles and verbal abuse were directed at him from the Aberdeen contingent in the main stand.

He is quite right to be angry and disappointed at having to leave a game early

    Derek McInnes

Dons counterpart McInnes, who will lead his team out in the League Cup Final against Inverness on March 16, said: “It was disappointing. They went there with the intention of trying to get behind their team and to enjoy themselves.

“Obviously one or two, if it is one or two, have made it difficult for Neil Lennon to do his job.

“He is quite right to be angry and disappointed at having to leave a game early.

“He is there to do a job, in view of our Scottish Cup tie this weekend, but has had to leave because of the annoyance of one or two.

“Hopefully they can be identified because that sort of behaviour is no use to anyone.

“We had a huge number of supporters at Tynecastle and the vast majority were fantastic.”

  5. Packie Bonner has said that Fraser Forster has the capacity to improve further still – after watching the Englishman set a new club record by keeping an 11th successive clean sheet, for Celtic.

Forster broke Bonner’s post-war record of eight successive league clean sheets for the club 10 days ago before surpassing a club record that dated back to 1922 when he held an opposition team scoreless for an 11th successive game on Sunday, against St Mirren.

For Bonner, a veteran of 641 games and 11 major trophies with Celtic, there is a conviction that the Englishman has yet to hit his peak. “Fraser will continue to mature and get better,” he said.

“I watched the Hibs game and he pulled off a remarkable save, a fantastic save, to help them make this achievement. I used to hate it when I was a goalkeeper and people said to me coming off the pitch, ‘Oh, you had nothing to do today’.

“It’s not about having nothing to do – it’s about keeping your concentration. Fraser is excellent.”

Neil Lennon was not quite as complimentary about Anthony Stokes, whose goalscoring has not been as prolific as in previous years and who now faces competition from the club’s new £1m signing, Leigh Griffiths.

“Signing Leigh just gives us another striker in,” said Lennon, suggesting the Irishman’s position is not yet under threat. “Anthony’s movement is good. He has to make sure he scores in one-on-one scenarios.”

  6. RANGERS are at the centre of a financial cover-up investigation over claims the club will be broke within two weeks.

The stock exchange inquiry was launched after an Ibrox official is alleged to have forecast they would run out of cash by mid-February.

New chief executive Graham Wallace has assured fans there is no danger of a second plunge into administration — two years after ex-owner Craig Whyte steered the club to its doom.

But in a complaint to the AIM exchange, a disgruntled investor writes: “It’s the worst-kept secret in Scotland that the club is running out of money in the next few weeks, yet the board has made no announcement.” The shareholder says Rangers should have disclosed any projected shortfall under stock market rules. AIM chiefs have vowed to investigate the claims.

An Ibrox spokesman said they could not comment on regulatory matters. But a source said last night: “It’s untrue — there are people trying to undermine the board.”

  7. Hillsborough survivors have spoken of how they were “scared and intimidated” by officers from the force tasked to independently investigate the football disaster.

The new investigation into the tragedy, which killed 96 Liverpool fans in 1989, has already uncovered a mass of statements given by police officers on the day that were doctored by South Yorkshire Police.

A subsequent inquiry carried out by West Midlands Police into the handling of Hillsborough by their counterparts in South Yorkshire has also become the focus for possible criminal conduct after the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) found ”differences” in witness statements taken from fans.

The BBC’s Newsnight has spoken to survivors who have also spoken of being mistreated by officers from West Midlands Police and questioned how officers took their statements.

One of them, N ick Braley, said that when he told West Midlands officers that he thought South Yorkshire police failings had caused the disaster, he was told he could face prosecution.

He told the programme he was “scared and intimidated” by a West Midlands officer and was accused of having a “grudge” against police.

Around 12,000 people spoke to West Midlands Police as part of its inquiry.

Analysis shows statements taken by West Midlands Police officers from supporters are not the same as the details given by the same individuals in questionnaires they had completed earlier.

Its investigation formed the basis of Lord Taylor’s judicial inquiry into the disaster, the subsequent decision not to prosecute individuals, and the flawed inquests whose verdicts were quashed in 2012.

The IPCC said last year it wants to hear from anyone who gave evidence to West Midlands Police either in writing, via telephone or in face-to-face interviews.

Last September a damning report by the Hillsborough Independent Panel found that South Yorkshire Police orchestrated a cover-up of events, falsified documents and blamed innocent supporters for the tragedy.

It also raised ”serious questions” over the work done by the West Midlands police force.

The report led to a public apology by Prime Minister David Cameron, the quashing of the original inquest verdicts, the resignation of a chief constable and the launch of two further investigations into the disaster, with criminal prosecutions of individuals and corporate bodies not ruled out.

Last month IPCC investigators said they were close to ”identifying and interviewing people as suspects”.

Britain’s worst sporting disaster happened at Sheffield’s Hillsborough stadium on April 15 1989 during Liverpool’s FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest as thousands of fans were crushed on the ground’s Leppings Lane terrace.

A young English guy told us he runs a charity locally and runs a football team. Well I said that the next time I visited that I would bring my old Celtic tops, which I did, last November. Well I was delighted to receive an email this morning, with a photo attachment ( I do not have there the ability to put it on Here. From iPad) showing the Bhoys in there new(secondhand) Celtic tops. He told me that the team he runs is called Franschhoek Utd and they play in ‘green and white hoops’ and the boys he give the tops to, didn’t know that Celtic played in similar strips! I suggested that they change their name to Franschhoek Celtic. Wish I could show you all the photoThe hate from the sheep all came from one man and one man only, Alex FergesHUN he was the wideo with the west coast bias accusation, and it all went downhill from there.

  21. One of the reasons I no longer listen to RADIO 5 LIVE is A. DURHAM

‘Edwin van der Sar holds a world record – when he was at Manchester United he went 1,311 minutes without conceding a goal in the Premier League. That record is under threat. Celtic’s Fraser Forster is currently on 1,035 minutes in the Scottish Premiership.

But don’t you think it would be an absolute scandal if Forster took that record off the Dutchman? Celtic are a heavyweight champ bossing the ring, seeing off a succession of flyweights week in, week out. Every game is a mis-match for Celtic, it will be an embarrassment if Forster doesn’t break the record.

It’s no criticism of the England man – he’s just doing his job. But it would be so wrong for a keeper at such a dominant club in such an uncompetitive league to take such glory.’

Why is he so anti Celtic?

    Vmhan,

My only point was, did our fans disgrace our club as TD67 predicted?

My instinct would be no…his was yes…shame on him.

Very much of a fabrication of the conversation I had with this DOB’s character (notice the nic). He is fabricating the truth big time, he did mention there was a couple of busses leaving the Gallowgate on sat. AM to watch Celtic Nation, and made the comment that I was concerned about that, and hoped that they did not think they where representing us, and if there was any trouble it had nothing to do with CFC, he kept insisting I was slating Celtic supporters, and I kept answering him saying I had no interest in Celtic Nation as I was a supporter of CFC and that Celtic Nation has no connection with CFC, that’s more or less the type conversation we had, now he has put a Jack Irvine Hugh Keevins spin on it, anyone on here who knows me knows I would NEVER slag Celtic Supporters, like others he has his agenda and is trying to get me to give oxygen to another set of supporters I will not talk about, it’s all getting rather childish to be very honest and I think that the conversation on that subject has been exhausted if I really want to be honest, HH lurking Huns GIRUYs.

Celtic are only as dominant as Manchester Untd . Where at the time they made the world record, so in a sense he is saying the flyweights down there are better than the ones up here?

Losers are losers no matter where you come from, that guy is a poor mans BFDJ.

The counter argument would be, why are The Rangers not breaking the record and then some? After all, in theory their dominance of the 3rd tier should be much greater than our dominance of the primary tier.

Where did you get the establishment want to ban Catholic schools?

It states quite clearly in the Independence Manifesto that Catholic schools would remain.

The NHS will also remain and become stronger with Independence as a stop to the present introduction of Privatisation measures will be implemented immediately.

When we get independence I will vote for the first left of centre government in Scotland for many years.

  28. A Durham is the talksport wind-up merchant . He just tries to stir up an agument but he a real agenda against Celtic. He’s always having a vicious digs at us. If you do some googling you’ll find that the huns regard him as one of their own. His dislike of Celtic is rumoured to be down to his partner being a zombiette.

  29. There’s a wee run of comments about Phil Mac’s take on the Sevco/New Club situation on the RIFC Shares Discussion Board. Here’s the latest three snippets.

“Not sure, but his track record would suggest something is about to happen. The RIFC / TRFC situation is likely too complicated to predict with any certainty. One thing, if no additional funding is found then it is curtains. As others on here have intimated, there is likely overdrafts / loans to be had, but they will not come cheaply. Shareholders should demand to know how much cash is left in the bank.”

“I agree totally. Reading through his posts for last 18 months he has been ahead of the game generally”

“He broke the Story about Murray’s financial problems Hugh Dallas E-Mail and Craig Whyte. So this far he has been a head of the SMSM and a whole lot more accurate. “
