When clubs go bad

775

Keep an eye on what’s happening at Leeds United.  The club is under offer from ‘colourful’ Italian, Massimo Cellino, who will become owner if the Football League decide that his conviction for defrauding Italian tax authorities is not sufficient to make him an inappropriate person to control a football club.

If Cellino is declared unsuitable by authorities in England I am told to expect a coordinated media campaign to have people with similar backgrounds hounded out of the game here.  The is a dirty war underway for control of one of Scotland’s newer clubs.

Leeds have historically been a club which it’s difficult to feel sympathy for but I genuinely feel for their fans, who suffered for the lack of a director to say ‘No more money’ amid the clamour to reach ‘the next level’, whatever that was at the time.

Now they are a massive club but lose circa £15m per year, making it impossible for them to compete with clubs far smaller than them.  Being subject to the attention of convicts is a direct consequence.

On a completely unrelated matter, I read Phil Mac Giolla Bhain today use the word “Wonga” in relation to Newco Rangers’ recent attempts to finance.  That was exactly the word used to me to describe a potential financer who is set to meet the club tomorrow. The campaign to oust the club’s current owners is significantly undermining their ability to do their jobs.

Well done to Big Yogi and the Highlanders for their unconventional route to the League Cup Final.  It must have been an absolute sickener for Hearts fans to lose to nine men.  Absolute.  Utter. Sickener.  Oh well.

I read Barcelona lost on Saturday for only the fifth time when Messi had scored.  Can anyone name another occasion?

  6. If Leigh Griffiths didn`t start the second half it`s blatantly obvious he must have committed some terrible misdemeanour at half time. He probably got some wee lassie racially pregnant during the break. He should never be allowed to play football again.

  7. Tomorrow’s Daily Record submission:

“Controversial Celtic signing Leigh Griffiths saw the terrible start to his Parkhead career go from bad to worse today. After not being included in Neil Lennon’s squad for Sunday’s St Mirren game, bad boy Griffiths was hauled off at half time in an under twenty match this afternoon. It is thought that the humiliated Scotland international will now seek crisis talks with manager Neil Lennon.”

I would say it’s the drip feeding of this stuff into the minds of the hordes that’s the end result.

They know that they can’t put this out via their own channels and they also know that if it just happened one day that Ibrox and Murray Park had to be leased they would have a riot on their hands.

This way it drips into their consciousness even as they deny it and decry the source.

  13. Saw an interesting Tweet from George Galloway last night suggesting David Cameron should pressure EPL to give an invite for Celtic and Rangers to join.

Cue ” there are no Rangers” responses but he seemed to realise later that an invite, in the political terms in which his original suggestion was made, would have much wider appeal and be poltically more relevant if it were extended to all Scottish clubs.

The paradox of Scottish clubs being excluded from the TV revenues that clubs in the same country enjoy always struck me as a strong independence bargaining chip either way.

The pro independents point out that a United Kingdom has stood by an watched as part of that kingdom sucked the life blood out of Scottish football So what is the benefit of being party to an arrangement under which one Scottish industry ie football is in perpetual decline?

The Better Together camp recognise the truth in the pro Independence point and, as Galloway has suggested after a bit of feedback, enabling Scottish clubs to play iin a UK league, and find their level like Cardiff and Swansea have done, could be a powerful argument for keeping a United Kingdom.

Now perhaps George was just flying a kite of a Sunday evening but given the state Scottish football finds itself in, perhaps this is the time for a debate for a UK league to enter the political independence arena?

Although I enjoyed drinking in The Horseshoe back then, it was more than 20 years ago.

Since those days I’ve managed to get barred from it twice. Once after the game against the huns at a soaking wet Hampden when I think they beat us 1-0 and David Robertson got sent off and the other time was when Mullet of Motherwell was in with 2 knuckle draggers who were sporting UVF rings.

Just had a wee lurk on a Hibs forum to see if there was any reaction to the incident involving Lenny at Tynecastle. I know it was absolutely nothing to do with them but I wanted to see if supporters of other clubs had a view on it and what their views were. To their credit the abuse he received was almost universally condemned by posters apart from a handful of trumpets who obviously hate him and suggested that he brings it on himself. Many of those who condemned the behaviour of the Aberdeen fans also pointed out their dislike for Lenny. Most felt that the attack was not prompted by anti- Irish bigotry because the Dons fans hate The Rangers more than they hate Celtic. They also said that Martin O’Neill nor Liam Brady suffered attacks like this so it was not motivated by any dislike for the Irish but by a dislike for Lenny. However, it was roundly condemned and many posters also condemned the attacks that Lenny and his family have been subjected to as disgraceful. One or two posters also condemned latent anti- Iris bigotry in Scotland.

  18. Question….

A Threat We Must Not Ignore

Two incidents featuring two people I don?t have much time for are red flags that we should be taking seriously this weekend.

I watched last night?s game between Cardiff and Norwich and observed Craig Bellamy mouthing off at a section of the crowd after scoring the leveller for Cardiff. I wondered what had been said to him as he was clearly reacting to abuse and also wondered whether or not it was his own fans he was bickering with.

The post-match interview provided the answer. Bellamy was clearly upset by the treatment he and his team mates had been receiving from their own support. ?That?s not like them. That?s not what happens here.?

Bellamy ? who has been the rounds at many clubs and is well-used to dishing out and getting stick ? was visibly shocked at the level of abuse being meted out by his own team?s fans.

This is a growing and worrying trend in football. Many fans are becoming increasingly loutish and thuggish toward players and officials of their own teams. The recent Ibrox boardroom crisis saw Rangers directors being verbally abused in front of their own children and fans talking about torching directors? cars. Celtic have also experienced hooliganism which was carried out at other grounds by the uber faction of their support as a protest against the Celtic board.

I have personally witnessed and been informed of incidents throughout the game where club directors have been abused, vilified and intimidated by their own so-called supporters.

It all points to a culture of abuse and frankly, it is not about sectarianism. Which means the religious and racial legislation recently brought out is not an adequate legal mechanism to deal with the problem.

The second incident was the disgraceful treatment of Neil Lennon yesterday at Tynecastle. By all accounts, the Celtic manager had to leave the game between Aberdeen and St Johnstone early because he was being pelted with coins, bottles and generally abused.

    Herein lies the rub.

You can?t really claim that there was any religious or racial element to this type of behaviour. I seriously doubt the perpetrators were attacking Lennon because he is a Roman Catholic or because he is an Irish nationalist.

Neil Lennon was attacked because he is hated.

It might not have been racist or religious but it was bigotry in one sense i.e. if you believe that blind hatred is bigotry, then if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck?

Hatred of a person is not a crime. Depending on how one goes about expressing that hatred, it could become something criminal. Throwing objects intended to hurt is certainly criminal and hurling abuse is definitely a breach of the peace.

    But that?s just legalese.

The real problem in football is not sectarianism or racism. These are expressions of hate. No, the real problem is hate itself.

Football in the 21st century is a breeding ground for hate but that hate is now turning inward and becoming self-cannibalistic. Sadly, Rangers is a perfect example where open hatred of the board and pro-board fans is clearly demonstrated by the rebels. I get messages of the vilest abuse constantly from these people, far more than from Celtic fans.

Most Rangers fans have taken well to Jon Daly but there is an undercurrent of bigotry toward him.

Celtic fans are not much different. Much has been made recently of the abuse dished out to Angela Haggerty but, as has been pointed out, nothing said to Miss Haggerty by David Limond was anywhere nearly as abusive as some things said to her by her fellow Celtic fans.

This new culture of hate and abuse is no longer confined to tribal boundaries. There is no doubt that it is fuelled by the social media craze. Louts that no-one would listen to twenty years ago suddenly now have a platform to display their lack of breeding and intelligence ? and think this then gives them justification to continue their anti-social behaviour in the real world.

I?m not a shrinking violet. I started watching Rangers in the late sixties/early seventies so I grew up in the heyday of hooliganism at the football. And I have been known to engage in drink-fuelled loutish behaviour myself as a younger man.

But, like others, I sense an ugly new attitude rising in football that, if not confronted and dealt with, could threaten the game itself.

One thing to consider is this: There are so many things that are now taboo to abuse ? homosexuality, religion, race etc. For those who happily vented hatred and abuse at stuff like this, it is now increasingly likely that they will get their collar felt or encounter the ire of other fans.

In other words, the doors are closing on abuse of causes, faiths, races etc.

So people who like to abuse are resorting to personal abuse more and more.

What is even more scary is that this drive to abuse is so strong in others that, in the absence of a suitable other to abuse, they will happily abuse their own.

Hating and abusing others or hating and abusing your own ? both are serious problems that are a threat to the future of football in particular and society in general.

As much as I like watching football, especially the English Premiership, I think the independence vote is far too important an issue for someone to decide which way to vote based on that.
