When media collaborate with power you have problems

1190

A journalist, banned by Celtic, attacked the club in the Daily Record today, suggesting the SFA chief exec Stuart Regan should have told Peter Lawwell to ‘wind his neck in’ and ‘remind him of his duty to the game’ after he wrote asking for clarification after Sunday’s game.

The hyperbole was raised to the extent the notion “Lawwell dragged our game back into a very dark place – somewhere dangerously close to disrepute” was put into hundreds of thousands of hands today.

A dark place, close to disrepute?  For writing a letter asking for clarification? Sounds to me like the know the trouble Peter Lawwell is causing to the vested interests at Hampden and they want him stopped.

By remarkable coincidence, this happens to be the same journo who wrote the puff piece for SFA president, Campbell ‘What school did you go to?’ Ogilvie for writing to Uefa demanding a referee was demoted (while circumventing due process) and asking for a player to be banned.

No mention of winding a neck in or duty to the game for a vastly farther reaching letter.

The same paper gives a platform to Barry ‘EBT’ Ferguson to level wholly inaccurate accusations against Celtic:

“By questioning the reasoning behind [the failure to award a penalty]in the name of their supporters, they were nodding towards all manner of hoary old conspiracy theories.”

Conspiracy you say, Barry?  Who mentioned conspiracy?  An explanation that the standard of refereeing is not good enough and that having 6 officials at Hampden hindered good decision making didn’t occur to you?

Some people are quick to deny conspiracies when a far less controversial response is available.

A concerted campaign has run for days now to ensure that Celtic cannot ask questions without being demonised.  When the media demonise those who question authority we are in a very dark place indeed.

This is intolerable.  It would not happen in England, where the breadth of media is wide enough to escape narrow seams of authority.  It doesn’t matter if it is the government, the Church, the police, big business or sport, if media collaborate with power, you have problems.

Some of it comes from people perhaps bitter that Celtic called them out and banned them, some from those unable to find perspective or consistency between writing about a Campbell Ogilvie letter and a Peter Lawwell letter.  All of them are time-served opinion formers who make money from Celtic’s actions.

We are the last superpower in the game, survivors in the battle of the ages.  This antagonism isn’t going away.  Not until their grandchildren are in place, anyway.

Clubs need to write letters when improvement is needed.  I hear estimates that income to Celtic from winning the Scottish Cup would have been in the region of £1m.  Football is big business and processes and resources need to as good as they possibly can be. If they are not, the very least you can do is ask for improvement.

On Meekings appeal yesterday….

The player’s appeal was right to be upheld, the case should never have been put before the SFA panel in the first place.  The referee Steven McLean saw the incident.  That was not disputed.  He asked his assistant for his opinion.  That was not disputed either.

Meekings representatives pointed out at the hearing that officials are not allowed to re-referee a game after watching TV.  This is a central tenant of the game and was accepted by the judicial panel.

Retrospective action is only allowed for incidents which referees did not see.  It is not permitted for referees to reconsider an incident he saw.  It is blindingly embarrassing to our game that the SFA didn’t know the rules well enough before taking this action.  I hear there was incredulity at Celtic when they heard Meekings was banned in the first place.

…… and you wonder why Celtic write letters.

Last call for the Ben Nevis Huddle……..

The outcry for retrospective punishment happened when Davy Provan spent most of a Celtic v Hibs game saying that something had to be done after a Bobo Balde incident.Phone ins for days later had Huns on saying the same thing in their usual anti Celtic monotone voices. Attitudes soon changed when Fernando Ricksen was first to be punished.

Did we send a legal team to the appeal, if we did actually appeal for Boerrigter?

The cheating officials had already said that they didn’t see the incident, and we were told they were unsighted.

That’s why the Compliance Officer was able to bring the retrospective charge, which has now been dropped as they suddenly do appear to have seen the incident.

Did you go to Primary school in the Brig? I went to St. Monica’s. Loved it. I’m having a wee chuckle with many of the memories posted above by others. Coincide with mine. Snowy milk bottles in winter mornings. Metal crates that your hands stuck to. Milk monitors, dinner tickets, handwork for the boys, needlework for the girls. Learning the catechism questions and answers by heart:

    Who made you?

    God made me.

    Why did God make you?

So sight being one of the 5 senses along with hearing, correct me if I am wrong? The ref at the Tonev – Logan incident heard nothing but the SFA still managed to ban Tonev for 7 games. So don’t tell me it’s paranoia.

Take some part of their ability to cheat away!

  23. Jungle Jim celtics statement did blame the celtic fans for them having to ask for clarification in the first place. To a large extent it doesn’t matter because it has had the desired effect and you can feel the palpable sense of panic at the SFA. The media have circled wagons but fantastically this is only making matters worse. Their desire to demonise celtic is now hardening views (hopefully)’at celtic.

However having said they wanted clarification for the support then celtic should provide that clarification to us should they not?

Beatbhoy I know I don’t need to tell you but to claim the referee and officials saw the incident then begs the question of why a penalty wasn’t given and therefore the player sent off (and the case upheld). Therefore there are only two further possibilities.

Firstly that the officials saw the incident and somehow made an error. A full explanation to that error and how it was made should therefore be given. This is the explanation celtic are looking for. This is very problematic for the officials and SFA because the gross incompetence will be clear for all to see and action will need to be taken against those officials. Their motivation will also be questioned because it was such a clear error.

The second explanation is that the officials saw the incident and decided it wasn’t a foul as the handball was, ahem, accidental. The consequence of this is very far reaching and is a precedent setting moment. Absolutely no handballs can ever be given again in Scottish football because you cannot categorically ever prove it was intentional.

So which is it? Now if the SFA are sensible they will choose option 1 and admit the glaring error and punish the officials. However their arrogance knows no bounds and they would be stupid enough to go down option 2. The media will back them whatever route they choose and attempt to demonise celtic throughout.

All celtic need to do is ask a few more questions and then watch the SFA collapse in on itself. They could indeed also through in the derk incident because clearly the rules are not being applied in a consistent manner.

So celtic must provide the SFAs explanation to th support? Agreed?

    Will they?

And will they ask the required and obvious questions publicly and transparently? This would ensure future fairness in decision making?

Or will they go silent and help, the SFA make it all go away?

If celtic do go quiet would you all accept that they are content to be cheated and are, once Again betraying the support?

    Interesting times eh!

  26. leftclicktic,

Ours was the ole “Penny Catechism” and something called “Bible Stories”. They both had BLUE covers.

I also remember getting told about places like Freemantle (visited it once years and years later) and the Land of the Midnight Sun, which Miss Brogan had actually visited. Don’t think too many folk in Parkhead in those days had done so.

  27. Well, with Wullie ‘fifth’ Collum in charge tomorrow there’ll be no shortage of eyes on any incidents then!

  28. Pog yes indeed we should also asks about the tonev action because once again the rules are not being applied consistently.

  29. beatbhoy,

Couldn’t agree more. How long would it have taken a TV official to send a message to McLean saying that it was a clear penalty and a red card? The correct outcome would have been reached with minimal stoppage or delay to the game.

In rugby it appears that the ref can refer a decision to the tv official. That seems like a bit of a cop out to me, and some refs (from my limited watching of the game) seem to refer an awful lot just in case.

I would prefer something closer to the NFL, where the TV is used to review disputed calls. The standard used is that there must be clear evidence to overturn a call on the field. So the ref is still in charge but clear errors can be changed quickly.
