I had very little interest in what former Rangers player Kirk Broadfoot did or said in a match against Wigan recently, I didn’t even know he was still in the game. What makes him newsworthy (to some) today is a 10 match ban, handed down by The FA in England, for what was reportedly sectarian abuse.
What I found galling is how Mirror Group Newspapers reported this story. The Mirror wrote:
“Kirk Broadfoot has been handed a staggering 10-game ban for a sectarian tirade against James McClean.
The Rotherham and former Scotland defender will have to serve what is believed to be the longest ban for verbal abuse in English football history.”
Its Scottish sister paper the Daily Record reproduced the same text with one edit:
“Kirk Broadfoot has been handed a staggering 10-game ban for launching a verbal tirade against James McClean.
The former Scotland and Rangers defender will have to serve what is believed to be the longest ban for verbal abuse in English football history.”
The italics are mine. For reasons which don’t surprise me, the biggest selling Scottish newspaper decided it was unwise to report that a former Rangers player received a huge ban for sectarian abuse. In 2015.
When Celtic Quick News started 11 years ago a couple of newspapers and radio stations pretty much controlled the news, politics and sports reporting in Scotland. The journos all worked together; this was a real cabal. If they wanted to blacken the name of a Fergus McCann, or his like, droves of people quickly turned away from him.
CQN started because reporting like this was rife and unchecked. I know the value of the new “citizen” media, but I also know its limits. We need newspapers, we need people to continue to buy them and we need them to find a viable business model. Without them, reporting which requires considerable resource, experience and, occasionally, money, will not happen.
Most of all, we need them to stop cutting their own throat.
I’m off to Aberdour today, for the 12th CQN Golf Charity Open, not that I’m a golfer, of course. See you there.

Pod i,
Do you write for the Daily Record?
…..or any newspaper?

Allan will be out of contract next summer and therefore able to negotiate a signing-on fee. He won’t get one from Rangers.
With Hibs,he can continue to improve his game and attraction to would-be suitors. That is unlikely at Rangers. Not one of their signings has done so thus far.
In fact, quite the opposite. It has ruined careers for most of them.
Hebcelt
visa info on thee club website.. although expect it’s for official club travel
lionroars67,

To be fair, neither do Man City!
CELTIC have secured a ‘Visa on arrival’ service for fans planning to travel to Azerbaijan for the club’s UEFA Champions League qualifying match on Wednesday, August 5.
Fans who have booked travel and accommodation should email Supporter Liaison Officer John Paul Taylor at jptaylor@celticfc.co.uk with details of client code, flight information and accommodation details for your stay in Baku.
This will be supplied to the Azerbaijan Visa Centre who will provide letters to travel and all fans with these letters will be issued with Visas on arrival in Baku. This information needs to be supplied by close of business on Tuesday, July 28.
The club hope this will help in providing the team with as much backing as possible for this important match.

Who was the last player who came through our youth system and went on to have a successful career at the club? McGeady?
Yes, we can produce youth players by the shedload but the club gets a poor return for its investment in young players. Either the young players are just not as good as we thought they were or our youth coaches are hopeless. Don’t worry, we’ve always got Dundee Utd. to fall back on.
Contact this guy if travelling to match in Azerbaijan

Fans travelling to Azerbaijan who have supplied details to jptaylor@celticfc.co.uk can you please include Passport No and Nationality thanks

Yes, I do agree, but I have great faith in Ronny-D in this respect. He has had to nourish young raw talent in the past, and he has already talked about this long-term philosophy for Celtic. All good!

Quick couple of paragraphs on the 11th CQN Open yesterday.
Sun shone as always. Great bunch of lads and lasses created a great atmosphere all day and night. Some incredible generosity in donating prizes for the golfers and the raffle. Too many to mention but you know who you are. Thank you!! We’ll have a total soon, funds to the Celtic Foundation, Paul67 will let you know.
Just like to thank Paul67 for making this possible. Paul puts a post on here just about every day and has put in motion a wonderful vehicle for all that is good about Celtic.
And also our other speaker, Super Joe Miller. Joe was with us for about 12 hours and it was magical to see him so at ease with all the people who wanted a bit of his time. Truly memorable speech at night too. Joe Miller was a fantastic footballer and is an absolute gentleman.
Thanks again guys!

We get good value for our investment in youth development IMO, we have a team of experienced top quality personnel in the youth academy who serves Celtic and Scottish football well, it would serve you well to look into attend games and training sessions across our youth system
Kitalba
I assume so because any Celtic supporters travelling have to get visas in London today.
Good morning from a bright dry Cheltenham. The sun is shining for the arrival of a Mr Winklepicker fae Swindon. :)
God bless all here and may he bless The great Glasgow Celtic.
Peace be with u all

They were both 17 when they arrived at Man City. I think a lot of the problems with our youth system is that they are not given a chance to bed in to the top team.
So this season I’m looking for more from Fasan,Fisher and Henderson.
DELANEYSDUNKY
I’ll call you in ten minutes or so. Tell that sun to haud oan,I’ll be there shortly!

At the risk of upsetting the Ronny Delia brigade………………i would have played Fisher before Lustig against the Icelandic team……………..i am also a big fan of Liam Henderson who IMO is a better player than Scott Alan

Just had a thunderstorm here – first proper rain in nearly three months.

Nl&m,
Write for that rag, certainly not neither do I read it.
I’m just not perturbed by this Allan scenario, we’ve been here and seen it before, possibly GMS if I remember correctly but not in a way the DR wanted us to sign him via a vis Allan to Sevco.
I find it funny the lengths being taken to try to ensure a ‘return’ to the top flight. It’s not the same, they are dead, starting over so one day they will play in the top league, who cares when.
PS still don’t get the hype around Allan

Ask LIVIBHOY. He’s his agent!
That lot are spending nothing on no one, they haven’t a pot ti pish in, or a window to through it out.
It’s just Hun behaviour at its best, and rules are being broke here by them AGAIN it’s basically in your face WATP attitude that is accepted at The SFA when anything involving this mob gets brought up, thing is, the more they do it the stupider they look and the longer they will be where they are, I mean they are a none entity right now every one knows that, it’s only the smsm that keep giving them oxygen, and when you think of it can you imagine them if they where a power?

hebcelt and others:
Thanks, I’ll e-mail and see if I can’t get a few briefs in with the Celtic Supporters who are travelling. I’m more than happy to go in with the home support, hoops and all, but I’m buggered if I can understand a word they say.
If anybody is coming, I think you’ll be pleased with your welcome and stay, assuming we get the result, and I think we will.
Be warned though, immigration here don’t do humour.
Just saw an ad for BT Sport, they tell me that they will show 30 SPL games plus 10 Orc games from the Championship!!! WTF is that all about? It’s not money well spent, it’s preferred allocation of funds.
Can Doncaster not just cut to the chase and do the league reconstruction thing now? It will save us a lot of angst next year and may let us make plans to GTF earlier.
Tallybhoy
That’s because we have it all!
