When newspapers cut their own throat

712

I had very little interest in what former Rangers player Kirk Broadfoot did or said in a match against Wigan recently, I didn’t even know he was still in the game.  What makes him newsworthy (to some) today is a 10 match ban, handed down by The FA in England, for what was reportedly sectarian abuse.

What I found galling is how Mirror Group Newspapers reported this story.  The Mirror wrote:

“Kirk Broadfoot has been handed a staggering 10-game ban for a sectarian tirade against James McClean.

The Rotherham and former Scotland defender will have to serve what is believed to be the longest ban for verbal abuse in English football history.”

Its Scottish sister paper the Daily Record reproduced the same text with one edit:

“Kirk Broadfoot has been handed a staggering 10-game ban for launching a verbal tirade against James McClean.

The former Scotland and Rangers defender will have to serve what is believed to be the longest ban for verbal abuse in English football history.”

The italics are mine.  For reasons which don’t surprise me, the biggest selling Scottish newspaper decided it was unwise to report that a former Rangers player received a huge ban for sectarian abuse.  In 2015.

When Celtic Quick News started 11 years ago a couple of newspapers and radio stations pretty much controlled the news, politics and sports reporting in Scotland.  The journos all worked together; this was a real cabal.  If they wanted to blacken the name of a Fergus McCann, or his like, droves of people quickly turned away from him.

CQN started because reporting like this was rife and unchecked.  I know the value of the new “citizen” media, but I also know its limits.  We need newspapers, we need people to continue to buy them and we need them to find a viable business model.  Without them, reporting which requires considerable resource, experience and, occasionally, money, will not happen.

Most of all, we need them to stop cutting their own throat.

I’m off to Aberdour today, for the 12th CQN Golf Charity Open, not that I’m a golfer, of course.  See you there.

ANGRY protestors chased Scotland’s only Conservative MP out of town after he turned up to open a food bank.

Protestors shouted “Shame on you” and screamed at Scottish Secretary David Mundell after he sneaked out the back door of the Trussell Trust-operated facility in the Dumfries and Galloway town.

They surrounded the white Ford Focus motor he was in, which had to slowly edge its way through the raging mob with the help of a police escort.

People banged on the windows and at first refused to let the vehicle move, until four uniformed police officers arrived to part the crowd.

The Tory toff and MP for Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale has previously questioned claims of a link between food bank use and his party’s welfare reforms.

Who came up with this nugget.Another example of how MPs are just a tad removed from the realities of life..My jaw dropped when I read this.

I get what you mean, but I’m sure a few Hibs games will be in there too, it’s as I said the WATP get what they want, but not for long I’m predicting.

I hope you are right, but the evidence suggests otherwise. The predicted rise to the top has been thwarted twice, firstly by the SFL chairmen refusing to bow down then the botched resource management of Super Sally. They are now in need of a leg up again, this time I fear the Blazers and MSM will get their way……its for all our benefits, don’t you know?

Celtic win race for Gary Mackay-Steven as Dundee United winger signs pre-contract deal with Hoops

11:54, 16 JANUARY 2015 BY RECORD SPORT ONLINE

THE 24-year-old will move to Parkhead in the summer unless a fee can be agreed between the two clubs to complete the deal this month.

DUNDEE UNITED ace Gary Mackay-Steven has signed a pre-contract agreement with Celtic and he will join the Scottish champions this summer, the Parkhead club have announced.

The 24-year-old made his first-team debut for United in July 2011, and he has gone on to make almost 130 appearances for the Tannadice side, scoring 27 goals.

He has also been capped by Scotland.

Hoops manager Ronny Deila spoke on Thursday of his interest in the player.

He said: “He is a player we have been looking at for a long time.”

Ronny Deila announced his interest in GMS when the pre-contract was pretty much done and dusted.

He states that Celtic had been interested for a long time, yet we did not tap him up to get him cheap and unsettle the player six months beforehand.

Once the pre-contract agreement was signed, all above board and under the radar, we negotiated in good faith and Dundee United got a fair price for a player they would loose in 5 months time.

He was also Cup tied, of course Dundee United’s lose was our gain. But we did not try to unsettle a player before a Cup tie, merely did January window transfer business like any other well run Club. None of this ones as bad as the other nonsense, it’s not close to comparable.

“Are Celtic still the only club in Scotland to have been fined for poaching someone….

I can’t think of any others. By the looks of thing Mr Warburton believes that New Rangers should be allowed to ride roughshod over rules, let alone common courtesies….

“We have to look after Rangers Football Club in everything we do. That selfish approach for any successful business, let alone football, is looking after number one so to speak.”

Well nice quote Mr Warburton, but Mr Deila is looking after number one and with a lot more class than you.
