When newspapers cut their own throat

712

I had very little interest in what former Rangers player Kirk Broadfoot did or said in a match against Wigan recently, I didn’t even know he was still in the game.  What makes him newsworthy (to some) today is a 10 match ban, handed down by The FA in England, for what was reportedly sectarian abuse.

What I found galling is how Mirror Group Newspapers reported this story.  The Mirror wrote:

“Kirk Broadfoot has been handed a staggering 10-game ban for a sectarian tirade against James McClean.

The Rotherham and former Scotland defender will have to serve what is believed to be the longest ban for verbal abuse in English football history.”

Its Scottish sister paper the Daily Record reproduced the same text with one edit:

“Kirk Broadfoot has been handed a staggering 10-game ban for launching a verbal tirade against James McClean.

The former Scotland and Rangers defender will have to serve what is believed to be the longest ban for verbal abuse in English football history.”

The italics are mine.  For reasons which don’t surprise me, the biggest selling Scottish newspaper decided it was unwise to report that a former Rangers player received a huge ban for sectarian abuse.  In 2015.

When Celtic Quick News started 11 years ago a couple of newspapers and radio stations pretty much controlled the news, politics and sports reporting in Scotland.  The journos all worked together; this was a real cabal.  If they wanted to blacken the name of a Fergus McCann, or his like, droves of people quickly turned away from him.

CQN started because reporting like this was rife and unchecked.  I know the value of the new “citizen” media, but I also know its limits.  We need newspapers, we need people to continue to buy them and we need them to find a viable business model.  Without them, reporting which requires considerable resource, experience and, occasionally, money, will not happen.

Most of all, we need them to stop cutting their own throat.

I’m off to Aberdour today, for the 12th CQN Golf Charity Open, not that I’m a golfer, of course.  See you there.

Thought the SNP were going to close Foodbanks, not open more?

Anyways, who knows, one day they may even get round to redistributing money from the wealthiest to the poorest, imagine, what a radical idea eh??

Admittedly they’ve only had 8 years in power though so still early days I suppose…

Just saw an ad for BT Sport, they tell me that they will show 30 SPL games plus 10 Orc games from the Championship!!! WTF is that all about? It’s not money well spent, it’s preferred allocation of funds.

Can Doncaster not just cut to the chase and do the league reconstruction thing now? It will save us a lot of angst next year and may let us make plans to GTF earlier.

No need for reconstruction, RIFC points at the end of the season are simply to be compared against the points of clubs in the Premier League with a 6 point uplift to account for them playing two games fewer. They will then be allocated the place that those points would have won them in the top league.

Result – European Football at least possibly even Champions League, and no need for them to over invest this season, Seemples!

EIGHTEEN years ago today, not many eyebrows were raised when Celtic boss Wim Jansen paid a relative pittance (£650,000) for a Swedish player by the name of Henrik Larsson.

But July 25, 1997 is a date that will go down in Celtic history given the impact he would have in the East End of Glasgow.

The future didn’t look bright when he gifted Hibernian a winner on his league debut, before going on to score an own-goal in his first European appearance for the Hoops.

However he went on to score 174 league goals for Celtic and 242 in total to become a club legend, and was the only non-Scot named in Celtic’s greatest ever team in 2002.

After four league titles, three Scottish Cups, two Scottish League Cups and a UEFA Cup runners-up medal, he joined Barcelona, where he won two La Liga titles and the Champions League.

Now managing Helsingborgs, Larsson showed last month he still had it when, at the age of 43, he subbed himself on in a practice game against Malmo… and duly scored.

Is he Celtic’s greatest player ever? Check out some of his highlights below…

Trying to buy a ticket for the Quarabag game. Been holding on the 1967 number for almost 10 minutes now after phoning the 1888 number as directed by Celtic website and being advised that ticket for last Wednesday’s game are on sale.

Mrs Emeraldbee and meeself will be over in Elounda a week on Friday. Was wondering how the ‘money’ situation is now, is it ok going to a hole-in-the-wall or would it be better to bring a fair bit of cash?

Thanks. Hope you’re enjoying yourself in the sunshine – hope the sun shines on me today at Celtic Park too.

  13. God bless Henrik Larsson!

Not really. Playing to par for your handicap should in theory result in 36 points.

Finally got answered after 15 minutes and the lass said sorry but she couldn’t deal with me and transferred me back to 1888 number. Now on hold again with the tempting offer of a ticket to the away game to Stjarnan.

Disappointed but not surprised given our lack of ambition that we didn’t try to get Jack Harper instead. He’s had a top schooling at Madrid & looks anexciting prospect.
