When newspapers cut their own throat

712

I had very little interest in what former Rangers player Kirk Broadfoot did or said in a match against Wigan recently, I didn’t even know he was still in the game.  What makes him newsworthy (to some) today is a 10 match ban, handed down by The FA in England, for what was reportedly sectarian abuse.

What I found galling is how Mirror Group Newspapers reported this story.  The Mirror wrote:

“Kirk Broadfoot has been handed a staggering 10-game ban for a sectarian tirade against James McClean.

The Rotherham and former Scotland defender will have to serve what is believed to be the longest ban for verbal abuse in English football history.”

Its Scottish sister paper the Daily Record reproduced the same text with one edit:

“Kirk Broadfoot has been handed a staggering 10-game ban for launching a verbal tirade against James McClean.

The former Scotland and Rangers defender will have to serve what is believed to be the longest ban for verbal abuse in English football history.”

The italics are mine.  For reasons which don’t surprise me, the biggest selling Scottish newspaper decided it was unwise to report that a former Rangers player received a huge ban for sectarian abuse.  In 2015.

When Celtic Quick News started 11 years ago a couple of newspapers and radio stations pretty much controlled the news, politics and sports reporting in Scotland.  The journos all worked together; this was a real cabal.  If they wanted to blacken the name of a Fergus McCann, or his like, droves of people quickly turned away from him.

CQN started because reporting like this was rife and unchecked.  I know the value of the new “citizen” media, but I also know its limits.  We need newspapers, we need people to continue to buy them and we need them to find a viable business model.  Without them, reporting which requires considerable resource, experience and, occasionally, money, will not happen.

Most of all, we need them to stop cutting their own throat.

I’m off to Aberdour today, for the 12th CQN Golf Charity Open, not that I’m a golfer, of course.  See you there.

I did think you were, may be a better option trying on Sunday ? They sent me a text stating I could get my own seats through to Sunday night booking, I nipped in yesterday.

I take it it’s too late to get your season ticket down to my big Mhate Vinny in Raploch ?

Yes they like to make you clock up the minutes when getting your ticket over the phone.

On thursday morning I went on-line to find that apparently my seat and all those in the area were sold out. Cursing myself for being slow off-the-mark I purchased a ticket as close as I could find to my seat -for full price. 20mins later an e-mail from Celtic saying my seat was available to me at £10 !!! Id just payed £23. Got on the phone and after 20mins got my own cheap seat and will now give the other to a friend.

  6. Good morning all

This will be my last post on here for sometime and will be blocking it from my laptop when I can work out how to do it.

I work hard all week listening to people’s complaints about the services of the company I work for, suffer from mild clinical depression , have been in hospital for two procedures since the beginning of 2013 and am far less financially secure than I expected to be at my age (54). But I am okay with my life really

I know the world is imperfect. I know that the country and city I live in are flawed. I am interested in political matters here and elsewhere and have opinions and beliefs on a variety of socio-political and religious matters that have been shaped by my family, my formal education, the books, magazines, newspapers and blogs I read, the music I listen to, the comedians I laugh at and films and TV shows I watch. I am not as clever or as well educated as I would wish but I am not stupid though I say and do stupid things.i do not know if I am typical of those who read and/or contribute to this site though I doubt I am one of the more remarkable here

I support Celtic. My parents and other relatives influenced me but never coerced me into following my team. I have possibky spent too much time and money supporting the Bhoys but when I see the Celtic I do not go out of my head – instead I feel at home. Celtic can be frustrating and twice – in 1970 and again in 2005- I have felt bitterly let down by them whilst in May 1999 the team, many in the support and the referee of a match I was at left me bewildered, angry and saddened. But mostly supporting Celtic has been great and bemeficial to me.

This blog has been my Celtic blog for years now though it is only since the passing of my friend Stephen Reynolds that I have contributed to it. It was erudite, witty, cultured, broadminded and passionate. Those I have met at a variety of hootenannies and even an Ayrshire gathering have been without excepton ‘ top blokes’ or ‘ top ghirls’.

I have taken sabbaticals from here before. Once because I could no longer stomach the views of a racist bigot ( not Kojo) and the other time was before and immediately after this year’s General Election. Now I am doing so because I am fed up with the incessant drivel I read on it.

The endless hectoring of some – be they Nationalist or Unuonist, Left wing, Right wing, pro- West or anti-West- has worn me down and worse I sometimes join in. Some of it the political discussion – especially when Kitalba or Csnamalar are on form- can be pretty informative and intelligent but too often it is so utterly lacking in nuance, so bullying in tone and in the case of some of the outpourings of BGX and One of the 70% -more sadly also the previously affable Macjay1 and the once agreeably curmugeonly Neganon2- just rubbish marinaded as the opinions often are with personal venom. Thompson Twin – whose style owes much to Alfie Noakes from earlier this year- can also add a unique lack of self awareness, a total absence of humour to his most obvious qualities of stupidity, crass generalisatios and a world class ability to switch between lower and upper case- TO EMPHASISE A COMPLETELY DUMB AND UNORIGINAL, WITLESS POINT.

I apologise for this drivel. I am going to see Celtic this afternoon and hope many people here do to.

    I may be some time

jimbo67, sorry to hear that. I find the best rule for a entertaining blog is CQN rule #7, which was oft used by Pablophanque : ‘Ignore the tragic attention-seeking wankers’.

  20. jimbo67 @ 11:27,

Well when Pablo was on that was a CQN high water mark, no doubt.

It’s never going to be the same again but there is still a lot of good stuff on here, very much wheat and chaff though.
