When the manager needs to stay in his lane

349

I have a lot of time for Bolton Wanderers.  During their extended stay in the English topflight, their late chief exec., Phil Gartside, was a regular supporter of Celtic joining the English and Welsh league pyramid.

When we signed 18-year-old Luca Connell from them in 2019, Bolton were in financial trouble.  Celtic could have acquired the player without paying a fee, but as an act of solidarity, agreed to meet the terms Bolton were asking from English clubs, who, operating under different criteria from Celtic, were required to pay.

£350k made its way into the bank of the Greater Manchester club.  Three years on and Luca has been released, having made no competitive appearances for Celtic.

The football department at Lennoxtown have decision makers at various levels, each with responsibility to recruit for a part of our internal player-pyramid and with an authority to spend budget.  The manager has oversight, but he cannot know enough about who is right for the youth squads.

Paths crossed when it came to Luca.  He was at Bolton as a youth when Neil Lennon was manager there.  Neil became ‘permanent’ manager at Celtic five weeks before that £350k payment went south in return for Luca.

All managers have their pet projects, so this is no reflection on Neil, but we have people in positions lower down the ladder for a reason.  Sometimes the boss needs to stay in his lane.

So P67, this reads like a bit of a ‘kick Neil’ for taking a punt on a player he thought could develop, while asserting that there’s some finely honed recruiting machine or system buzzing along in the background, ensuring we always pluck value and integrate prospects into our squad slipstream.

As in “‘The football department at Lennoxtown have decision makers at various levels, each with responsibility to recruit for a part of our internal player-pyramid and with an authority to spend budget…’

Celtic was not founded by a Catholic priest. Br. Walfrid was a Religious brother of the Marist order, he was never ordained as a priest.

Further complications came from the fact that, although Alex was born into a Protestant family in predominantly- Protestant Govan, his father was a Celtic fan. His younger brother Martin, 55, who now works with 56- year-old Alex, was also an ardent supporter of the Parkhead club.

*The Ferguson’s came fae the Renton and I believe lived doon the Tontine, the Renton was always green as an influx of Irish arrived there tae join the Teuchters, who had been kicked off their land, to work in the print and dye industry.

Local legend states that while the women worked in that industry, the only men involved were gaffers and maintenance workers, the men folk worked on farms and public works and allegedly built the Renton Road that links the village tae Dumbarton

Seemingly back then prior to the Irish arriving in the Rock to extend the railway line fae Dalreoch through to Cardross, they had just left blasting through the rock that formed the Boulevard or Great Western Road, it was a tangerine hole

At the local farm fair up Carman Hill where Robert Bruce allegedly had one of his castles, King Arthur, Merlin and Camelot seemingly were there tae, numerous battles between the tangerine men and local ben afflecks occurred, the latter sent them back up the Renton Road tae think again

So the Fergusons came fae a Tim village, home of the Kelly’s who were members of the local Irish Land League, although I have NEVER heard of anyone by the name of Ferguson being Tims.

It seems though his grampa married a daughter of the manse fae Dumbarton, now I have no idea if he “turned his coat” but no matter what he remained a Celtic supporter.

He only arrived in Govan after convalescing from wounds received in WW1 at Bellahouston, fed up with the commuting his wife decided tae relocate there

Alex’s da and brother continued to support the boys as did his bhoy Martin, he still though talks well of the Renton fondly and recently sent a memento down there for local fund raising.

Henrik Larsson sent a signed Helsingborgs IF top tae as the ghuy that was running it, founding member of the local Renton CSC, was instrumental in Ghod receiving an Honorary MBE

Sir Alex’s mother was a member of the one true holy and apostolic faith and chose NOT to get married in an RC Church, even though his da was ok with that, as looking at the climate at the time realised any weans would have a better opportunity if they were ken dodds.

Similarly so did his bride, also a member of the RC faith, so if you look at his dna, which usually follows the matrimonial line, he is more of a republican sympathiser than some of or support, green brigade notwithstanding, he is also a self confessed reader of Irish Republican literature.

AT, heard that interview a while back. A fascinating insight to the man.

  15. One thing Rod Stewart did get right last night was being on stage before Andrea Bocelli’s version of Nessun Dorma. And also before Hans Zimmer and Celeste’s joint effort and interpretation of “What a Wonderful World” which was nothing short of brilliant.

Can’t agree about the Celeste version – but I’m old.

I hardly recognised the original song there, (though it was more or less introduced by David Attenborough,) but I think Hans Zimmer’s arrangement, was designed to send a different message to Louis Armstrong’s original, as in it is a Wonderful World……but not for much longer.

    Celeste captured that.

It would fall on deaf ears of the so called VIPs there. Would be better playing ‘ Come fly with me’

I would hope to finish around halfway – it depends on any signings we make – midfield certainly needs strengthening. It only takes a couple of decent additions to make a big difference at our level.

Usual queries, whose signing, leaving etc is it really a big jump? Or is that were the money kicks in?
