When the wealthy borrow from the poor

1829

Sell fans a ticket, you owe them a game of football.  Whether the standard or result it good or bad, it’s a relatively easy commitment to keep.  That’s what fans get in return for spending money on a ticket.

Sell people shares, you owe them a share certificate.  That’s what shareholders get in return for coughing up for shares.

Borrow money from fans and you owe them much more than a game of football or a share certificate.  In many instances that money will have come from people who had to forgo things to provide you with the loan.  You owe them a duty of care that their loan will be repaid, or converted with their agreement.

It beggars belief that an unsecured loan has been offered to Rangers International by fans group, Rangers First.  If, as claimed, the obligations to Sports Direct have been met, the club will have both the ability and the incentive to pass the securities previously held by Sports Direct to the fans group.  The club’s IP, training ground and ancillary assets should now be unencumbered, who better to have security over these critical parts of the club than a fans group?

Unless, of course, the obligations to Sports Direct have not been met.  Or someone else has their eye on the assets.

The claim that Dave King would match Rangers First’s loan took me by surprise.  This was counter to everything I knew and expected of him.  His swift denial was more consistent with expectations.

There is an axiom in football: Any club who has enriched a PR individual to the tune of £500k in the last year is making a serious attempt to divert it’s fans attention.  Celtic’s PR machine deals with the efficient communication of football information and financial reports.  Nothing whatsoever is spend attempting to lead the news agenda.  This often leaves us on the receiving end of that agenda, but we have nothing to hide.  Which is the way it should be.

Few sights in business or football can be more alarming than when purportedly wealthy people borrow money from poorer people.  The warning signs are writ as tall as the Ibrox stands.  This time there is no hidden Ticketus deal people can claim they didn’t know about.

    Agreed

I do believe the Boston tapes were a genuine attempt to do something similar for the northern conflict. Unfortunately too many agendas involved. Maybe the wounds were still too raw. But the difference being that 1916- 22 was a relatively short period and it was feasible to wait 20 years to take statement. The northern troubles lasted too long for that luxury. To wait 20 years to interview people who were involved from the start would never work as most would be dead

  2. Good night/good morning……..Four hours sleep and then early mass, as V insists, because things to do in preparation for the upcoming flight. Looking forward to seeing some of the finest people imaginable, very soon.

Joe Duffy book, haven’t read it but I will.

However it’s getting an awful lot of publicity and positive reviews

Now I will sound harsh but I think that’s mainly driven by post colonial self loathing. Yes children were killed in the rebellion, tragic beyond belief, some were killed by brits, most by accident cross fire. Has anyone written a book detailing all the children who were killed that week by various armies across Europe.

No, but maybe Ruth dudley Edwards could oblige

By the way I think you will enjoy The Scrap by Gene Kerrigan.

Certainly if Stakeknife had his way.

Problem as you say, duration of the conflict but also too many jurisdictions involved. Think it will be a while before people “trust” oral history projects which is a shame given a real history of the troubles will be smoke screened due to the current problems over legacy issues. There is a real need for primary sources but who would come forward with the threat of retrospective sentencing.

Anyway starting to bore myself here.

Keep the faith Wits and happy new year to your butler.

  5. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Jimmynotpaul, Lee’s dad told me a few years back about agents hovering over promiding youth players and arranging contracts for boots for example.

Agents should be nowhere near youth players, the players union should be the ones acting for them. Mind you that Weasel , Wishart, would only want to deal with the Auchenhowie conveyor belt of talent. You only ever hear him in his union capacity when its something to do with Ibrox.

  6. Wits. What did I do to deserve that…..

I wasn’t having a go at you. Please don’t misunderstand me, but I am a little pissed off about joe Duffy book. That said I haven’t read it, though I intend to,

When you think about it, this is the centenary of the 1916 rising, naturally there will be lots of books about it, I find it strange that this one, whose message seems to be ” what awful scoundrels those rebels were” should get the publicity and praise that it has.

By the way have you read it

  9. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Gearoid, Bobby ‘ seven minutes injury time’ Tait was the MC at a sevco trust do recently. He and him of Smith must score infamy were at the top table.

It amuses me they get Tait involved cause that seven minutes of injury time provided the goal that , thankfully, made it more difficult for them to get the ten.

I know you weren’t having a go. I was jesting. I have a “signed” copy of the Duffy book. It is a bit anti reb but Duffy was a member of the Labour Party with Alex White so I knew what to expect and forewarned was forearmed. If it had have been anything else it wouldn’t have received the positive publicity/reviews that it did and sales are everything.

One of my happiest memories provided inadvertently by Mr Tait against Kilmarnock.

I was at Dunfermline match next day courtesy of friends from Linwood who were my go to guys for away tickets (the HTs of their day if you will). Sickened beyond belief at that result but set up the next week perfectly…..hence the moniker.

What did you make of the book, joe Duffy is not the worst. I actually like him and his radio show often helps the weak and vulnerable and he has a long history of left wing activities from his student union days, but the old stickie virus got him along the way, and I say that as someone who once had a bit of time for that particular branch of republicanism before it became obsessed with being anti nationalist.

My god I am even confusing myself now

  14. GEAROID 1998 and Dallas Dallas….

I have posted this before many moons ago and maybe worth a repeat.

I have an old book in my collection titled “A Lifetime of Soccer” by Peter Craigmyle who was a leading Scottish referee for over 30 years. The book was published in 1949.

    He writes….

” Nevertheless, honours did come my way and in 1922 I was given the Rangers (1872 or 73 to 2012) – Clyde Glasgow Cup Final at Parkhead.

During the game there was an appeal for a penalty against Rangers (1872 or 73 to 2012). My view had been entirely obscured , so I went over to ask the linesman whether it should have been a penalty or not.

His reply was : “sorry ref, there was a wee speck of dirt just got in my eye and I couldn’t see a thing”.

No penalty was awarded and Clyde lost 0-1.

    Gordon, some things never change.

I was watching my son playing a few years ago. On the pitch next to the one his team was on, there was a female ref in the official clobber apart from the shorts. She had a pair of black sevco shorts on.

Gearoid at 9.41, one of my pals was working the day of that Killie game at Ibrox.

He finished around 4.30pm and was lstening to SSB in the car.

As he entered the Clyde Tunnel, it was announced Ally had scored. He lost reception and didn’t know it was Ally Mitchell who had scored.

He was cursing Sally as he thought it was him who had scored.

It took him another five minutes before he found out it was Ally Mitchell who had scored for Killie.

His mood changed greatly and was his best ever drive home , he told me.

  19. Dena

We’re hoping to leave straight after 10am Mass so should be down in plenty of time. I’ve still to give Almore his tickets so I’ll make sure you two meet up.

  20. Wits

Duffy was one of the good guys, although a bit myopic on the North, which led to many arguments.

I participated in the protests against the removal of the medical card from Students in the South and the anti Reagan protests so got to know him very well. Exceptionally sharp with a Ballyfermot heart and wit……hence the signed copy BUT still has a long way to go on the North and indeed the South lol. Alex White is a lost cause.

Given your antecedent I take it you have read Brian Hanleys Lost Revolution.

    ;)

BTW – in the run-up to the ’16 Centenary I wouldn’t be surprised if the inhabitants of “Montrose” aired an open apology to Britain for all that nasty historical stuff.

Yes lost revolution, a very apt title.

I was never directly involved with them but as a teenager leant towards them, had a few friends, few years older than me, who specialised in” fund raising” but paid the price for it and became very disillusioned, with the direction they took. By the late 70s they found themselves in limbo and just drifted away

Good stuff with the Jim Spence link

Shrug Keevins today talking about past Scottish Cup finals said “Hearts beat Gretna on penalties, what a story that would have been if Gretna won the Scottish cup then went out of business”

For the “record” it’s now happened Shug !

  26. Bankie

It’s like the MSM plays to a demographic. Like yourself (and Wits no doubt) no lover of the line emanating from Montrose which was forged in the 70s by the Drinkers Party BUT I guarantee spend some time in Joe Duffs company and you would certainly change your perception of him.

Anyway as in football matters agree to disagree.

I heard that today from Shug, Oh for one of them to tell the truth, but money and safety come first I suppose, and you really canny blame them, if the truth be know, they are doing a grand job, had they told the truth all them years ago, they may well have gotten it sorted, Ah well.

He is the panto villain, but in truth he is just an attention seeker who slags the West of Scotland sectarian issue (his theory) but then has made a living out of trying to wind whatever side up

Did you get to a game with your bhoy the day ? I read this morning when you posted the EK game was off, I was heading into town with Miss GFTB to spend her “build a bear” vouchers (good bears) her mum had made her excuses so it was just me and the wee yin on a day out, joked with her if she got a season ticket we could do this train journey every other weekend, yet again she is warming to the idea, I live in hope

Gerry, the Pollok game was postponed. Their pitch is normally in good nick but they were looking for volunteers recently to help clear up storm damage.

A real blast from the past plays for Pollok, 41 year old Robbie Winters.

Your gentle attempts to get the wee yin interested will hopefully pay off.
