When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose

914

So why go to court when you know you have signed up to a rule (literally) that forbids you from going to court and that will almost certainly lead to your expulsion from football?

Because almost certainly being expelled from football is a better option than the alternative.

As Bob said: “When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose”.

They have nothing. Nothing.

You suspicious, never would have thought it :>)

I think we both know who is behind things, although we don’t know the names as yet, we may never know, but we know what is pulling the strings.

I still think there will be at least 2 claims to the hun brand, whatever arises from the sewer, they will fight it out in the court I believe.

I just want them to die.

And you have got someone else to blame apart from yourselves.

  9. Today as every Celt knows is one of the most important dates in our illustrious history.

It is no co-incidence that this date was chosen by a select few in the Limerick area, Ireland, to form the Patrick Sarsfield CSC in 1997, 15 years ago today. My , my how the years fly.

Comrades, if you have the time, let me relate to you a story this evening, that will gladden and sadden your hearts.

I have been waiting for some time to write this piece, but could not rise my spirits to do so.

This evening I got a call from a dear friend and true Celtic fan, Billy Hogan, who asked me to put a piece up on CQN regarding the Patrick Sarsfield CSC anniversary.

But, that isn’t the real story. The real story is as follows.

In around 1990/91 I was playing trad/folk sessions twice a week in a local bar.

I was blessed to be supporting three of the finest trad players in the country, and I knew it.

One Sunday afternoon there was a call from the crowd to get a song from a guy in the audience, Tom Pigott.

He stood about 6’ 3” and built to match. A former senior rugby player, he looked more like a brawler then a singer.

Anyway, he sang “Raglan road” and quiet literally, you could hear a pin drop.

He followed it with that beautiful Scottish song “Glencoe”, which did not particularly please me, as I had spent weeks learning the same song !

When the session was finished, we had a few pints together discussing, songs, singers, bands ect..

Lo behold, it came to pass that we discovered that we both had a deep love of Celtic football club.

So it was, a friendship was formed that night that deepened with each passing year.

With our great friend, Billy Hogan, we set about travelling to Glasgow as often as possible.

I had the two lads join the recently formed Charlie Tully CSC in Shannon, Co Clare.

This was the first CSC in that part of Ireland ever, from which incidentally, at least 5 other clubs have emerged.

Let me digress, it was founded by a Belfast man, Charlie McMullan Murray, of whom, with Paul67’s permission and my comrades indulgences, I would love to write about some time.

Anyway, We travelled to Glasgow as often as possible, by car, bus and plane.

We thought nothing of a 5 hour drive, 2 hour ferry and 2 hour drive to Glasgow.

The craic we had with our fellow Celts, the games, and the singing were unbelievable fun.

Tom had a business at the time, selling fireplaces all over the North.

On the Falls, the Shankill, South Armagh, Ballyclare, you name it.

After a few years we formed the Patrick Sarsfield CSC in Tom’s beloved Limerick city. Was he proud of that place !

Putting his money where his mouth was, himself and Billy opened the first true Celtic bar, Tims, on Thomas street. The stories that came out of that place.

He insisted that we follow in Celtics tradition and organised trips for less fortunate teenagers to travel to Glasgow.

With Community worker, Liam Maskey, and a former UVF commander, he organised cross community activities in North Belfast. He took kids on trips to Brittany. That was his way.

Like most Celtic fans, we had great adventures attending Celtic away games around Europe.

We made friends that will stay with us for life.

I’d like to mention, Joe and Ellen Dunn from Greenock as an example. People who make you happy just to be alive.

The pinnacle of our travels was the trip to Seville.

How I obtained the tickets is a story in itself. But with confidence, we had booked a package holiday in the Algarve (with our understanding wives’ agreement) before we had even beaten Liverpool. (It wasn’t that much chance taking, we had Larsson).

Our great hero, the aforementioned Charlie McMullan Murray, sadly lost his fight after a long battle, to cancer, the day before we beat Boavista.

We took Charlies photo into the stadium that day and held it up so he could see the glory of his comrades, singing and laughing.

Tom started a new business several years ago, doing something he loved with all his being.

Himself and an American singer songwriter named John Smith started bringing small personalized tours for Americans interested in Irish history and Culture. He would bring them from west Cork to Kerry, west Clare up to Donegal. Giving history lecture and trad music every night in local pubs.

Business boomed. He literally made a fortune in a few years, but he worked extremely hard.

It was his sheer love of all things Irish that made the tours so successful . How successful ?

Well they are booked solid for the next three years!

Not forgetting his charity work, he made a beautiful CD with all the proceeds going to the Children’s Hospital in Dublin and a village sponsorship in west Africa.

I would sometimes give a lecture or do a gig for the tours. The laughs Tom and I had would fill a book.

The last game we saw together was with our Dublin friend, Chris Walsh, against Dundee Utd last May.

We gubbed them and it turned out to be one of the special weekends.

Our youths paraded their trophy, we got pissed and ended up in a hilarious situation in Diamond Dogs and wore home the obligatory kebab.

Tom was on a cruise in the Caribbean, drumming up business for his tours last February.

After the onboard concert he was having a singsong with Mary Black and Don Stiffe when he took ill.

The following day I was in my local watching Celtic playing, I think Caley Thistle, when I got the phone call.

    The giant was dead.

My friend, my comrade, had passed away.

    Crazy.

I watched the game through a vale of tears. Stunned.

I had good buddies who on hearing the news, came to drink with me and make sure I was ok.

I drank for 2 weeks solid. Until the body was returned to his native shore.

I was honoured to sing along with John Spillane, in the church at his funeral mass.

Tom would have laughed. He loved his religon and he knew it takes wild horses to drag me into a church.

After I sang, I felt a voice saying,”Thanks Madra.” I looked at his coffin and said, “You are welcome.”

To which replied, “ Why are you looking over there? I’m not in that coffin.”

The mind plays strange tricks on you when you are emotional and have been drinking too much.

The music after the burial in his spiritual home of Doolin, Co Clare, is still spoken about.

On the leagues final day, we hammered Hearts, I watched again in my local.

I wasn’t actually thinking about Tom until Neil Lennon lifted the trophy and the tears flowed down my face.

I miss him, as does Billy. His schoolboy chum

Death is with us all. Tom lived it as best he could, to the full.

He loved Limerick and Munster Rugby, he loved his country, it’s music and his religion.

    He adored Celtic.

He was never as happy as he had been in the last few years.

Live life to the full, answer only to yourself, help all those you can, even those who hate you.

    Life is very short.

Thank you for reading this, sorry if I over indulged, but this is good therapy !!

Let me also mention Mark Delaney, also a founding member of Patrick Sarsfield CSC who died far too young this year.

    Below are a couple of links;

The first is a collection of songs and photos from Toms tours.

    Then there is Tom singing unaccompanied in a bar;

When Charlie McMullan Murray died, we made a photo montage of his life, singing his favourite songs in the back ground. This is Tom singing Charlie’s favourite; Johnny Thompson.

Finally John Spillane singing an ancient Gaelic song as a lament at in the pub in Doolin after the funeral.

    Hail, Hail.

My father and brother frequented the Patrick Sarsfield CSC when they were over from Glasgow during 2002, they were working on the construction of the Clarion Hotel. They loved their time over in Limerick, mainly due to the CSC. My brother still has the club polo shirt to this day! A couple of the guys from the club even stayed at my parents house when they were over for a game.

I hope the supporters club is still going strong. Hail hail.

THERE were scenes unprecedented at such a match when Celtic won the European Cup in Lisbon yesterday, beating the Italian champions, Inter Milan 2-1. There was a crowd of 54,000, but so noisy and colourful were the 7,000 Celtic supporters who travelled across Europe by air and road that it seemed at times that it was a home match for them.

When the final whistle blew hundreds invaded the field. Some knelt down and kissed the turf, some took clods as souvenirs. And in the excitement the players were badly mauled by those who sought to congratulate them. When they were finally shepherded to the pavilion it was remembered that the cup had not been presented.

Billy McNeill had to be taken back through the crowd and up the terraces to the rostrum to receive the great trophy. Later he was seated on a motor car roof and the cup in that way was paraded before the crowd.

Scottish supporters pushed their way into the dressing room and were given sips of champagne from the cup. Twenty minutes after the finish excited supporters – some of them wearing the kilt – were still dancing about the field and falling full length to kiss the turf.

There had been tremendous traffic chaos before the match all round Lisbon and some had deserted cars and buses and set out on the five-mile walk to the stadium. Afterwards the cheering, singing supporters began the march into Lisbon, and the streets of the old town were noisy and excited. Towards midnight there were frantic efforts to round them up and get them to the airport in time for the planes which were flying out.

Jock Stein, the Celtic manager, said: “This was a triumph for attacking football against defensive methods. This victory by Celtic will be good for the game, because attacking soccer is what the fans want to see.

“Even before half-time, I thought Inter were slowing and when we went out in the second half we were confident we were going to win.

“After Gemmell had made it 1-1 Inter had nothing left. They didn’t even fight back.”

Helenio Herrera, the Inter coach, said: “It was impossible to stop the onslaught of Celtic. The better team won. But we were without Luis Suarez and Jair da Costa, and Sandro Mazzola was not fit.”

The players’ wives and sweethearts, who had been flown out in the morning, met the team later at a restaurant where Celtic had their own private celebration after the official banquet at which medals were presented. They have made a clean sweep of European and Scottish football and await a match with the South American champions for the championship of the world.
