Woody Allen and the Pope of Rome

1600

There’s a moment in Woody Allan’s movie Bananas, after the leader of a military coup takes control, that he loses his faint grasp on rationality and plunges headlong into random nonsense.  He informs the inhabitants of his Latin American country that Swedish will be their new language and that underwear now should be worn as an outer garment.

BBC’s Jim Spence this morning reports that a Dundee United director, flush with the success of reaching the League Cup final, told him United want almost double the ticket allocation for the final than they were able to sell for the semi-final, as “We want to ensure as big a crowd as possible for the game, which we are sure the sponsors would want too”, and that he wants United fans in the Toryglen end of the stadium, or the Celtic end, as it’s known by everyone else in the land.

Sure, ask for more tickets than you were able to sell, but don’t justify your request on the basis that this will ensure a bumper crowd.  If anything, it will achieve the opposite.

Asking for the Celtic end is right up there with wearing your pants on top of your trousers.  It’s a random and irrational exercise of power by someone who is evidently in way over their head.  It’s technically possible to have United at the ‘Toryglen’ end, but it would achieve no benefit and only cause confusion and inconvenience to thousands.  If Woody Allen is short of quality material (which appears to be the case), he should spend some time here.

Scotland is not full of these types, but those there are seem to gravitate towards positions in our national game.  From now on, I’m going to think of United chairman Stephen Thompson with his pants on the outside.  Pantsman Thompson, seems an appropriate handle.

I don’t know about you, but it’s been a while since I’ve had to listen to thousands sing “No Pope of Rome” at a public gathering.  The problem is not as significant as it was a few decades ago, and is largely limited to the embers of a dying sub-culture. The rest of the country has moved on, as have most Rangers fans. I’m not sure how, or if, you can check these excesses, but I’m sure they are overwhelmingly self-harming.

Kenny MacAskill, appointed Justice Minister in the SNP government on the basis of having selective hearing and being able to make absurd claims, left his post in November.  His government have yet to make any comment on yesterday. Nor have they repealed the politically-motivated Offensive Behaviour Act, or show they are remotely interested in asking for the laws they introduced to be enforced without fear or favour. The Act was aimed at you and is simply flawed. It is toxic, remains in place out of nothing more than bloody-mindedness and will be repealed at the first change of government.

Anyway, you’ve got a cup final to look forward to on the weekend of the CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite, on Friday 13 March.  Email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com to book your tickets.

was there any trouble before or after the game yesterday?????????

    i havent heard of any

maybe for once rangers fans didnt disgrace themselves apart from their singing of vile songs

bbc said 19 arrests were made around the stadium

  3. JJ-I think I read if Cfifti got a straight red card v The Sheep, he would have missed the next league game, and eligible for LC Final? Stupid rules are the norm in this country. Missing finals for 2 yellow cards,3 months apart, is total nonsense. HH

Just read a ten year old Rankers fan hit after bottle thrown at his supported bus

We need to get rid of the idiots in our support

  5. 1.6 Knocked back as well. We seem serious about him. 3 bids. Just pay the money. If your GMS what are you thinking? Do they want me? or him? Strange position to be in for GMS.

Oil for the yanks and cheap labour and resources from Ukraine for the corrupt and undemocratic EU.

  7. STV News top story. Rangers bus attacked near Hampden before game. 10 year-old boy hit in face with bottle thrown into bus. Rushed to hospital with facial injuries.

Just another ten to go, our signing policy has to change. too many freeloaders bleeding us dry, if any board members are lurking…that doesn’t mean getting rid of players and buying mibees to fill their boots.

Buy players that will get in our team and do a job.

I can’t agree. Gms has signed and will be a Celtic player in the summer at the latest.

    Armstrong might never be.

  10. GM-Players don’t get to play in too many cup finals, to miss a final for 2 yellows, over 4 or 5 games is nonsense IMO, a straight red for a McCulloch type assault, fair enough. HH

  11. Just seen on stv news about the young boy on bus who was attacked , & is in hospital 1st thoughts DOBs was sick & saddened to hear it was our support , I sincerely hope the culprits are found , they are not welcome at our great club

  12. o.g. Rafferty,

Sorry I just don’t trust anything that happens in Scotland. We don’t know what Ashley plan is for them yet.

Is it to rip them off? By sending a few players north of the border. Is it just to cool down the peepul?

Maybe to give fringe players at Newcastle a game and punt them in a later Transfer Window?

Having looked at Rangers Media they have really turned on McCoist and the Old Guard. The Rangers support seem to be questioning much of their recent history. Even Smith and Murray.

Could it possibly be that by spending far less money in Scotland he can provide a vehicle to launch Sports Direct commercially in Europe?

I don’t know what the answer is but I suspect that Ashley wants the old Rangers dead too, not the support, but the leeches on the board etc. He wants to take their money. Maybe in a smaller sense purely by selling jerseys and stuff in Scotland?

Or does he have a bigger vision, supported by the football authorities or looking at his commercial methods, just ignore the rules.

    Who knows…

I think GMS will be a great addition to the team but i was meaning we have made 3 attempts now to get Armstrong now and no attempts to get GMS before the summer. If it was me i would be a bit bummed out by the attention he is getting over GMS.

    Just saying.

  14. The only logical reason I can fathom out for Dundee Utd having the east stand at Hampden for the final is the the ease of access from the new exit from the M74 onto Polmadie Road.

This would only facilitate their supporters buses having to make their way through Glasgow City Centre and Shawlands at the end of the game

I remember attending matches in the 70s maybe 80s where Celtic supporters had half of the old west terracing when the faced the likes of Hibs and Dundee Utd in finals

The old East terracing at Hampden had a greater capacity than the West terracing and now I believe both East and west stands have a similar capacity so it doesn’t bother me what end we end up getting. The only problem I envisage would be the corporate hospitality buses travelling from Celtic Park having to go that wee bit further poor souls

BMCUW @ 13:24ish Hampden is served by both Mount Florida and Kings Park stations there would be no need for the Dundee Utd support travelling to the game by train to wade through any of the Celtic support

  15. “GM-Players don’t get to play in too many cup finals, to miss a final for 2 yellows, over 4 or 5 games is nonsense IMO,”

    Bada,

    I agree.

But I was under the impression that he played 3 and was Booked in two of them. Could be wrong though neebs.

I’d like to see some rule where points or fractions of points were removed for each game you go without a booking. Especially in the league

If the quotes in these articles are accurate (which is not guaranteed, I know) ….

However, assuming that Stokes and Griffiths have been quoted accurately, then I think whoever is stitching Stokes’ and Griffith’s hair back on has done it way too tight, as they seem to have suffered brain damage ….

  20. SPFL Rules on Temporary Transfers (as they call loans) are confusing – no surprise there.

58 (i) states no more than 4 loan players at any one time.

58 (ii) states no more than one loanee who is not an under 21 player at any one time

58(iii) states no more than two players who are not under 21s can be played during a season

58 (iv) states no more than one loanee from a club in the same division

58 (v) states no more than two loanees from a club in a different division

58 )iv) states no more than three loanees from any club.

60 states no more than 5 loanees between 1st July and the following 30th June.

    So …

Assuming that my interpretation of all of this is correct, and that The Rangers don’t currently have any loan players, I reckon they can get three on loan from Newcastle, at least two of whom must be under 21s.

But I could be reading this verbiage all wrong…

It seems simple …. MA figures that he wants the deadwood off his payroll, and cant find anyone to take them…. then it hits him! Sevco will take them, pay for taking the deadwood, and then thank him for the privilege.

  22. GM-For the avoidance of doubt,Broonie’s booking yesterday was the best i have seen for years…..:))
