Woody Allen and the Pope of Rome

1600

There’s a moment in Woody Allan’s movie Bananas, after the leader of a military coup takes control, that he loses his faint grasp on rationality and plunges headlong into random nonsense.  He informs the inhabitants of his Latin American country that Swedish will be their new language and that underwear now should be worn as an outer garment.

BBC’s Jim Spence this morning reports that a Dundee United director, flush with the success of reaching the League Cup final, told him United want almost double the ticket allocation for the final than they were able to sell for the semi-final, as “We want to ensure as big a crowd as possible for the game, which we are sure the sponsors would want too”, and that he wants United fans in the Toryglen end of the stadium, or the Celtic end, as it’s known by everyone else in the land.

Sure, ask for more tickets than you were able to sell, but don’t justify your request on the basis that this will ensure a bumper crowd.  If anything, it will achieve the opposite.

Asking for the Celtic end is right up there with wearing your pants on top of your trousers.  It’s a random and irrational exercise of power by someone who is evidently in way over their head.  It’s technically possible to have United at the ‘Toryglen’ end, but it would achieve no benefit and only cause confusion and inconvenience to thousands.  If Woody Allen is short of quality material (which appears to be the case), he should spend some time here.

Scotland is not full of these types, but those there are seem to gravitate towards positions in our national game.  From now on, I’m going to think of United chairman Stephen Thompson with his pants on the outside.  Pantsman Thompson, seems an appropriate handle.

I don’t know about you, but it’s been a while since I’ve had to listen to thousands sing “No Pope of Rome” at a public gathering.  The problem is not as significant as it was a few decades ago, and is largely limited to the embers of a dying sub-culture. The rest of the country has moved on, as have most Rangers fans. I’m not sure how, or if, you can check these excesses, but I’m sure they are overwhelmingly self-harming.

Kenny MacAskill, appointed Justice Minister in the SNP government on the basis of having selective hearing and being able to make absurd claims, left his post in November.  His government have yet to make any comment on yesterday. Nor have they repealed the politically-motivated Offensive Behaviour Act, or show they are remotely interested in asking for the laws they introduced to be enforced without fear or favour. The Act was aimed at you and is simply flawed. It is toxic, remains in place out of nothing more than bloody-mindedness and will be repealed at the first change of government.

Anyway, you’ve got a cup final to look forward to on the weekend of the CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite, on Friday 13 March.  Email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com to book your tickets.

What you ARE saying is that you are, for the sake of your hate-Labour, hate-UK illiterate agenda – prepared to look the other way and appease it.

When, oh when, will you people realise – an independent and/or SNP run Scotland will be no friend to our minority – where the hell does some of our ‘so-called’ support get their new love of Scotland?

Apart from the above – we, the Celtic traditional support NEVER backed the Scottish football team, or, the Scottish anything, if it comes to that.

We had wonderful palyers – e.g. Big Billy, Wee Jinky, Dunky McKay, Paddy Crerand, Stevie Chalmers, Bobby Lennox, Wee Bertie, constantly overlooked to represent the Scottish team, in favour of inferior Rangers players, the likes of McKinnon, Henderson, Shearer, Stevenson, Brand, Wilson and Johnston.

The latest shenanigans with Murray,Whyte,Green and now Ashley, are merely the modern equivalent.

Would I swap ours with Real Madrid? YES.

So going by their reasoning, the Dog and Duck pub team from the Berkshire Sunday league qualify for the title, having won 359 trophies.

Very good point, mate. Strangely, most of the incidents that night-including at least one Hearts fan getting a serious doing-went largely unreported.

Must have been too late for the deadline…

  9. Absolutely delighted with our signings and the fact we also held on to players that were supposedly half way out of the door.

Celtic buying quality talent from a position of strength, this is not our usual modus operandi, however it is a much welcome change of transfer policy.

There are no guarantees with signings and I know some have doubts but in my opinion GMS and Stuart will thrive in a Celtic jersey. They bring pace, excitement and skill and I for one can’t wait to see them. I haven’t seen Michael play but I wish him every success; what a chance you have son.

If what I read on twitter is true there was no chance of the Killie Billy signing for us …doesn’t seem to like us. Enjoy mediocrity son.

How the hell you can call yourself a Celtic supporter and vote for a party that always was, is, and ALWAYS will be, our enemy, beats me.

What have the one-issue SNP mob EVER done for the working class in Scotland – except deliver them to Thatcher and join in coalition with the Tories at Holyrood – you should be ashamed of yourself – your forefathers will be ‘turning in their graves’

  13. bgx,

The boy was “bottled” according to cultsbhoy, that, to most people conveys a picture of someone walking up to the boy and sticking a bottle in his face, similar to being glassed or tumblered.

Not a single person on here has condoned the bottle being thrown and everyone has shown sympathy for the boys plight, however some are twisting it into a deliberate attack on a ten year old boy, that is doing a better job for the meeja than the meeja hoped for.

And remember its being judged on the balance of probability as yet unproven so the truth is no one actually knows it was a Celtic supporter.

  14. Alfie Noakes….so what did labour do to stop the huns signing policy of no catholics?…just asking like…

  15. Jonny Rambo67

In answer to your first question the answer is ‘No’. I am quite surprised that the mood is quite as taciturn as it is.

Regarding the ‘bottling’ of a ten-year-old boy sorry as BMCUWP has said that is inexcusable and actually, yes, it is worse than 15000 bigots singing sectarian songs. I have absolutely no doubts that there were other atrocious incidents where Celtic fans were victims that have not been reported to the police or the media but the injuring of a child is not the fault of the media. We have louts in our support- bottle throwing cowards who leg it as soon as they are unarmed leaving innocent bystanders to suffer the response.

As for Rangers signing 5 loan players from Newcastle I do not know what the rule is- or if there is one to cover this- but I assume from the reaction here that they are all at least as good as Messi.I know that is not the point if this is actually against the rules but if it is not it does not seem worth twisting our knickers.

Oh and welcome to Gary and Stuart. I have liked the look of both for at least two years- Stuart Armstrong was very impressive even on the day we beat them 6-2 just after we lost to Juve. My one surprise, disappointment even, is that we have not also brought in a defender- preferably a centre back- but two days ago I though we would get nobody so well done to the club (and I say this as a mineshafter).

    ———————————————————————————-

    What point are you making?

My point is that if there were, using your figures, 52 caps available, they should all have gone to Jinky in the ‘same position’ – he wasTEN times the player Henderson ever was.

We never created a fuss at the time, because, as I said, we could not have cared less about the Scotland team, and all things Scottish.

Celtic players were routinely ‘booed’ by the hordes at the ‘Mount Florida’ end of Hampden – the ‘Toryglen’ end was usually filled with East of Scotland, Angus and Aberdeenshire, Tuechers – a forerunner to the ridiculous modern day Tartan Army, which some of our misguided fans seem to be joining.

Again – what actual point are you making? – it seems you are just backing up mine.

  21. bgx,

  24. We have just had a very satisfactory weekend; a comfortable win against our new city rivals and 3 good additions to our squad in the transfer window.

And what do I see on the blog from one of our most persistent trolls, a rehash of indy/referendum arguments. Alfie Noakes, you are boring beyond belief. Please go away.

I can well understand Canamalar’s reluctance, refusal even, to accept anything our MSM say. On balance, it seems like a minibus full of The Rangers fans was attacked and a 10 year old badly injured. We cannot excuse such behaviour. Nothing wrong with checking out the facts before we condemn our own.

  25. What did the SNP do?

There was no basis in law to challenge Rangers – all they had to say is that they never saw anyone good enough, or, Catholics were not inclined to sign for them. It is Rangers shame that they had this unwritten policy – NO ONE ELSE’S

Labour NEVER discriminated – they implemented ALL the great socialist principles for ALL the people – from Welfare State/NHS – to Tax Credits/Winter Fuel Allowance/Minimum Wage, and a thousand other things in between.

Socialism is dead in the Labour Party.

Has been since 1975 when Denis Healey became the first chancellor outside Chile’s Pinochet to introduce MONETARIST policies when the country ran out of money under Labour.

From 1997 onwards our rich got richer under a marketing experiment called socialism, like Healeys chancellory it left the country with no money.

    Labour does not work

Labour simply cant add up and subtract.

Labour are a false god to anyone who has an interest in the countries poor.

Labour can not handle money markets

Now if only there was a party of the true left and not these careerist bullshitters who oversee the rich gettin richer.

People want truth not what some market theorist thinks socialism is.

Ps dont be saying it was the global financial situation-the deregulation of capital and money markets accelarated under labour.
