Woody Allen and the Pope of Rome

1600

There’s a moment in Woody Allan’s movie Bananas, after the leader of a military coup takes control, that he loses his faint grasp on rationality and plunges headlong into random nonsense.  He informs the inhabitants of his Latin American country that Swedish will be their new language and that underwear now should be worn as an outer garment.

BBC’s Jim Spence this morning reports that a Dundee United director, flush with the success of reaching the League Cup final, told him United want almost double the ticket allocation for the final than they were able to sell for the semi-final, as “We want to ensure as big a crowd as possible for the game, which we are sure the sponsors would want too”, and that he wants United fans in the Toryglen end of the stadium, or the Celtic end, as it’s known by everyone else in the land.

Sure, ask for more tickets than you were able to sell, but don’t justify your request on the basis that this will ensure a bumper crowd.  If anything, it will achieve the opposite.

Asking for the Celtic end is right up there with wearing your pants on top of your trousers.  It’s a random and irrational exercise of power by someone who is evidently in way over their head.  It’s technically possible to have United at the ‘Toryglen’ end, but it would achieve no benefit and only cause confusion and inconvenience to thousands.  If Woody Allen is short of quality material (which appears to be the case), he should spend some time here.

Scotland is not full of these types, but those there are seem to gravitate towards positions in our national game.  From now on, I’m going to think of United chairman Stephen Thompson with his pants on the outside.  Pantsman Thompson, seems an appropriate handle.

I don’t know about you, but it’s been a while since I’ve had to listen to thousands sing “No Pope of Rome” at a public gathering.  The problem is not as significant as it was a few decades ago, and is largely limited to the embers of a dying sub-culture. The rest of the country has moved on, as have most Rangers fans. I’m not sure how, or if, you can check these excesses, but I’m sure they are overwhelmingly self-harming.

Kenny MacAskill, appointed Justice Minister in the SNP government on the basis of having selective hearing and being able to make absurd claims, left his post in November.  His government have yet to make any comment on yesterday. Nor have they repealed the politically-motivated Offensive Behaviour Act, or show they are remotely interested in asking for the laws they introduced to be enforced without fear or favour. The Act was aimed at you and is simply flawed. It is toxic, remains in place out of nothing more than bloody-mindedness and will be repealed at the first change of government.

Anyway, you’ve got a cup final to look forward to on the weekend of the CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite, on Friday 13 March.  Email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com to book your tickets.

    Morning,all.

Delighted with the transfer window in one respect, not so much in another.

Ours has been very good, maybe coulda done wi shipping a few out,but why be churlish. Rare congrats to the board from me,nice use of the cards dealt by PL.

Theirs has been better. Five new players,no need to worry about the legalities of mass loans,or how to pay for them. No doubt sanctioned by the appropriate SFA official. Sandy Bryson,I believe.

Complaints will no doubt be made by others in their division-rightly so-and filed under R,for rubbish.

  3. For once I am happy with our transfer window activity.

Credit were credit is due (even if infrequent) but well done Celtic.

With regards rules for signing loanees, Scottish clubs are allowed 3 loans from one club. Dunfermline were hit by SFA earlier in month for having brought in 4.

Don’t know what the rules are for Sevco though. Likely diferent from every other club as they are a company.

Remember the first thing they tried after entering administration – sign a player.

It’s in their klan dna. …rules are for others.

Sure Dunfermline escaped punishment because the SPFL had just been set up and nobody was sure of the new rules .

The New club can’t claim that now .

  10. All day yesterday, Sky kept referring to the approaching signings of stars that were about to take place on the southside. So much so that some foreign to Whyte’s ploys must have been convinced that Messi, Suarez, Neymar, Renaldo and Bale were heading to Scotland to play for Newco.

By contrast Sky was reporting that negotiations were protracted re. the players that Celtic was trying to buy. I suspect hoping that it would all fall apart.

One consolation for Newco fans is that the game plan will not change. That Gaelic footballer will be able to launch high balls into the penalty box with a better degree of accuracy than was seen on Sunday.

Vmhan knowing how much you love Doire, you must be sad that one of your own let you down.

To the new bhoys, welcome to the dream and the possibility of playing against world class stars on European nights in Paradise. Hail, hail.

  11. I don’t think they’re are any restrictions on cross border loan signings. All the limits I’ve seen are in relation to club within the same governing body.

  12. Of course if the SFA had any balls at all they would simply refuse to register more than 3 of them saying it was outwith the spirit of the game.

  13. In all honesty I couldn’t care less what Sevco are doing. They are not important. Even bending the rules or unethical practices don;t really help them anymore.

Mrs LB says they play Hibs soon and they have brought in Fyvie.

We are not talking Real Madrid players here it is 5 boys from Newcastle.

We have proven that loans are a huge gamble and rarely work. They have just increased their wage bill and may have brought in average dross.

  14. Think we can now see why Ogilvie was re-elected unchallenged, there was further dirty work that required the hand of a shameless cheat.

  16. the long wait is over on

What will happen with Thems and their loan signings is more likely to be this:-

They’ll get them up here for a few days , have a look at them in training , work out with the SFA or whoever it is how many they are allowed to keep and if it’s not 5 boot the other poor young guys back down the road.

Not really too fussed tbh – they could take 5 first team players from Newcastle and still be a millions miles from decent.

Just been to the shops and saw the front page of the DR. A photo of a badly beaten man.

” Rangers supporter James Martin, father of ….etc”

I am surprised that I can continue to be disgusted by how irresponsible our rags can be.

Of course the perpetrators are to be despised but one has to assume they are not quite right in the head. A National Newspaper is calculated in what it is doing. In spite of this, Celtic supporters still buy them. I give up.

  18. I’ve been reading in the news that Hampden Park Limited are taking the blame for the state of the Hampden pitch at the weekend.

It’s interesting to find that the list of current directors of Hampden Park Limited include Stewart Regan, George Peat and a Robert Ogilvie. I wonder if it’s just a coincidence that some of these directors share the names of current and former SFA senior management.

I wasn’t aware either until I checked online , surely that loophole is now closed . If they don’t implement the rules then as others have said its up to the clubs competing against the NEW club to complain .

  21. One question in relation to the Newcastle loanees – do transfers from England to Scotland involve an International Transfer Certificate? If so, then SPFL rule 62 says you can have as many as you want.

Seems odd. There is a limit set of 1 player on loan from a cub in the same division and 2 from a club in a different division. But 3 in total from any one club.

Now another club in Scotland has to be in the same division as you or in a different division, doesn’t it? So surely the 3 player rule can only apply to clubs in another country?

But then why should I be surprised that SPFL rules make no sense?

  22. Livibhoy,

Sorry pal but what a lot of pish, the game/sport in Scotland is being destroyed as competitive competition and all you can say is you don’t care about sevco, really ? And what will be your cut off point, when will you decide enough is enough ?

Going by your attitude that will be when 11 Newcastle players beat us to the title and by then there will only be a few of you WWF supporters left paying for season tickets.

Can’t believe how blind some Celtic supporters can be.

It is really sad that the wee boy and James Martin are if true badly injured by Celtic fans. For me that is a disgrace and I hope the culprits can be found soon and put on trial.I think any decent Celtic supporter who are the majority will despise this kind of behaviour from the small minority of idiots who follow the hoops. I, for one, want our Board to concentrate on moving Celtic forward, and not to get embroiled / side-tracked by all the shoite coming out of Hampden / ipox etc…….they would luv Celtic to get involved since it would rally the Orc hordes, and give them a crusade (pardon the phun) ….let sevco get on with destroying all credibility, and eventually destroying themselves ….
