Woody Allen and the Pope of Rome

1600

There’s a moment in Woody Allan’s movie Bananas, after the leader of a military coup takes control, that he loses his faint grasp on rationality and plunges headlong into random nonsense.  He informs the inhabitants of his Latin American country that Swedish will be their new language and that underwear now should be worn as an outer garment.

BBC’s Jim Spence this morning reports that a Dundee United director, flush with the success of reaching the League Cup final, told him United want almost double the ticket allocation for the final than they were able to sell for the semi-final, as “We want to ensure as big a crowd as possible for the game, which we are sure the sponsors would want too”, and that he wants United fans in the Toryglen end of the stadium, or the Celtic end, as it’s known by everyone else in the land.

Sure, ask for more tickets than you were able to sell, but don’t justify your request on the basis that this will ensure a bumper crowd.  If anything, it will achieve the opposite.

Asking for the Celtic end is right up there with wearing your pants on top of your trousers.  It’s a random and irrational exercise of power by someone who is evidently in way over their head.  It’s technically possible to have United at the ‘Toryglen’ end, but it would achieve no benefit and only cause confusion and inconvenience to thousands.  If Woody Allen is short of quality material (which appears to be the case), he should spend some time here.

Scotland is not full of these types, but those there are seem to gravitate towards positions in our national game.  From now on, I’m going to think of United chairman Stephen Thompson with his pants on the outside.  Pantsman Thompson, seems an appropriate handle.

I don’t know about you, but it’s been a while since I’ve had to listen to thousands sing “No Pope of Rome” at a public gathering.  The problem is not as significant as it was a few decades ago, and is largely limited to the embers of a dying sub-culture. The rest of the country has moved on, as have most Rangers fans. I’m not sure how, or if, you can check these excesses, but I’m sure they are overwhelmingly self-harming.

Kenny MacAskill, appointed Justice Minister in the SNP government on the basis of having selective hearing and being able to make absurd claims, left his post in November.  His government have yet to make any comment on yesterday. Nor have they repealed the politically-motivated Offensive Behaviour Act, or show they are remotely interested in asking for the laws they introduced to be enforced without fear or favour. The Act was aimed at you and is simply flawed. It is toxic, remains in place out of nothing more than bloody-mindedness and will be repealed at the first change of government.

Anyway, you’ve got a cup final to look forward to on the weekend of the CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite, on Friday 13 March.  Email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com to book your tickets.

    Remember that movie? The Paper?

The over riding arc being that the front page only had to be true for one day.

‘We taint them today, make them look good on Saturday. Everybody’s happy!’

The bangers that did these things are bangers every day of the week and that level of violence would out. In or out of a football top. You check the Glasgow & the West news section of the BBC website and there will be as bad, as vicious attacks next weekend. And the one after that and the one after that.

Wonder how the orchestrated attack on the Brazen Head would have been reported but for the police getting ‘intelligence’

One day the bangers have an excuse – the next day they don’t need one…

I know we don’t hear about the Hearts and Celtic supporters who are victims of violence, but we are not going to change the bigoted media, and all they do is shame themselves…….but, I will always condemn wanton violence, as I know you do…

  3. I believe a Celtic steward was arrested at the United game for running on the pitch at the weekend. What an eejit!

As for the person who threw the bottle at the bus and hit the kid. What an idiot. Hope he does time for that.

Had our bus bottled many times with lots of kids on them after games in the past. Very dangerous and cowardly thing to do. Doesn;t matter what team the bus is or who is throwing the bottle it is idiocy!

Chugg? I’ve known plenty of people to be called a wanker, but he’s the first I’ve heard of to be christened as one!

  5. Strongly suspect that the bargain lot swap to Sevco Direct was passed by Lodge Floor # 6 at Hampdump before being processed.

They just want to ensure that Sevco Direct have the best possible chance of reaching Premier League next season, thus avoiding Armageddon, civil unrest etc.

Also interesting that the dreadful Sunday pitch was blamed on Hampden Park Ltd – directors including Ogilvie, Regan & Doncaster not some off-shore entity. Reportedly Directors paid themselves £129K last year in addition to SFA remuneration.

  6. 67heaven…,

Then condemn wanton violence without reference to the meeja selected story’s.

We know it happens, I’d like us all to turn on anyone who brings a bad news story about Celtic and its support onto these pages, simple as that.

We have enough eyewitness story’s that get relayed, today the mass law breaking that went on at hampdump at the weekend never happened, that was the plan and hook line and sinker it’s now fact.

    Moving forward to what ?

I asked earlier, if we don’t have an honest game where are we going, what’s the point ?

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

    Moving forward to Paradise……. :)

We have resisted all our days, and we have prevailed (our day has come) ……… and we will continue to resist / prevail. …… we cannot stop them hating us, but we can rise above their sectarian bigotry, and laugh at their efforts to destroy us ending up destroying them ….how ironic is THAT …….. It’s good to be a Celtic Supporter, and it’s good to celebrate our roots / heritage …….if it has to be in a hostile / jealous environment, so be it……HH

  8. Is anyone really in any doubt that journalists went looking for anti-Celtic stories after the Hampden game?

This is a bitter little country we inhabit, held only in some sort of check because we are part of the UK – the mind boggles as to the treatment that would be handed-out to us in an unbridled separate and bankrupt country.

I am sure that we even would shoulder much of the blame for the nose-diving of the oil price, it they could summon-up the propaganda.

Bitterness, hatred and sectarianism is inbred in Scotland – always has been and ALWAYS will be.

  9. 67heqven…,

We’ll be playing them at least 4 times next season and you say we won, sorry can’t get my head round that one, they dumped hundreds of millions of debt and we’ll be playing them at least 4 times next season, what exactly did we win, help me here, I’m genuinely looking for a positive.

  10. One thing really concerns me about the 5 Newcastle lads signing for them, are they eligible to play in Europe????????????

I believe the guy works for Celtic as a steward and was arrested at the game on Saturday where he was supporting United.

    That’s all I know I’m afraid.

  12. Could this have been the bus with the large royal hand of ulster flag displayed and their fans on board banging the windows to some sectarian song driving past Greigs at the Celtic end. Most of the celtic fans were amused by their stupidity and waved them on their way….would have been different at the other end.

  13. LiviBhoy +1

Throwing bottles at a bus is not such a rare event and I assume most of the time the worst that happens is a cyclist, runner, walker cuts himself soon after going over the broken shards. In this case, it seems the thug opened the minivan door and threw the bottle in, most likely after lots of banging on windows and obscene gestures and chants from both sets of fans. All sounds so familiar, so sad but predictable.

I remember leaving the Ibrox area on a public bus after beating them in the 90s. My mate and I had no colours on and were the only ones sitting upstairs. Next thing stones and bricks were flying at the windows and six huns came on giving it lady, screaming at us, kicking us, spitting on us while we scrambled to get off and run for it.

My mate was a serving police officer, he still is. Now a detective inspector.

Funnily enough we never reported it, we were glad to escape and go and have a beer.

  14. Did the SMSM mention that my good friend MWD was attacked by a gang of rangers supporters and almost lost his life!

For the Huns it has to be a gang v 1.

Don’t give the SMSM any voice on here.

Perhaps it would be better if we could express ourselves in any fashion we fancied and not risk people being offended. As that is not the case, it is probably better to consider the audience when making a point. I am sure most agree with your main point and I could have written this myself :

“I’d like us all to turn on anyone who brings a bad news story about Celtic and its support onto these pages,”.

Indeed, I believe I have and explained that there is no need to as the MSSM do it in spades with scant regard for the truth.

  16. As a few have also said

Not the board or lawells biggest fan after last few windows and few other reasons but credit where credits due.

Brought in 2 players with lots of potential as early as possible.

Im sure lawell like us would love to have moved on derk pukki balde and couple of others.

Celtic can register a further three players for their Europa League tie against Inter Milan. Deadline tonight. Guidetti, Armstrong & GMS…

Not doubting that Celtic employee him direct or not.

Just find it amusing that a steward can;t behave at the fitba. The irony is funny! Probably get a ban.

I’m quite happy in .the knowledge that they are deed ……if they insist on perpetuating the myth, fine, get on with it…..BUT THEY’RE DEED……..AND SEVCO ARE HEADING FOR THE SAME PRECIPICE …….WITH THE MEDIA HOLDING THEM BY THE HAND

  22. Alfie noakes…so SCOTLAND is secterian without end, there is no hope,we are all doomed, fancy going for a drink sometime,i need cheering up…..jeez o….

  23. I get it that it’s really important to some people in the game and media that TRFC get into the top tier.

But if has to be on sporting merit and within the same natural football finance constraints other clubs are governed by.

The problem that is being created is that the Rangers at all cost policy means they can never be relegated if promoted and if they are in the the play offs will be seen to be benefitting from referee decisions.

I know that has always been so but there can be no doubt that because of the potential size of their support they get and expect favours not available to other clubs.

What happens if with the help of NU players they get promoted?

Do they in effect have an NU B team playing in the Premier?

This is not football as a sport it is stage managed poor entertainment.

    Have you been watching ?………

The world has now accepted the old firm is alive and kicking, old firm violence and disorder have heralded that return to normality, sitting chuckling to yourself about knowing better than the rest of the world does not exactly convince them of your sanity. We’ve lost the propaganda war, we might still make a fist of the legal and sporting arguments but I don’t see this board having the gonads for such a fight, they have proven themselves to me as part of the old firm and all that’s wrong with the sport in Scotland, remind me what happens when good men remain silent ?………..

  25. Did they show pictures of the monkeys in the rags…..everything seems to be doom and gloom after sunday….people need cheered up.

You have to admire the Sevconian ingenuity. They get rumbled for one form of cheating, so they just go and try a different form. All within the SPFL/SFA ‘rules’, of course.
