World records now beckon for Celtic

605

It was a league game at Tannadice, Hogmanay 1966, which ended the Lisbon Lions 26 game unbeaten domestic run, a record which stood until yesterday. Stein’s Celtic were comfortable and led with 20 minutes to go, but United scored twice in three minutes and before the Champions had time to realise they were in trouble, it was too late.

That’s how historic runs end.

It’s only this season anyone has paid attention to that specific record, such were the overwhelming achievements which unfolded in the months ahead for the men who would become known as Lions. With the League Cup already secured, they added the Scottish Cup and the League title, before becoming the first team to break the Italian-Spanish-Portuguese hegemony on the European Cup.

The serendipity of one of the Lions records falling while we celebrate the 50th anniversary of their great achievements should not be lost.

Season 66-67 wasn’t just about Lisbon. Celtic retained the league for the first time since the Great War – a 50-year gap without defending the league title! They won the treble, the (then competitive) Glasgow Cup, and finished off with a virtuoso performance at the Bernabeu. They changed Scotland forever; nothing would ever be the same again.

Hearts only offered effective opposition for around 5 minutes yesterday, but if/when we lose a domestic game this season, it’s likely to follow the format of St Johnstone’s visit last midweek. St Johnstone defended every Celtic attack bar one and created a chance which could have bounced off the post more generously for them.

All the pressure and superiority in the world are irrelevant in the face of the statistical certainty that, in one game, a dominant team will miss all their chances and concede one of the few they are called to defend.

More records beckon for this Celtic team, not just Scottish ones. Benfica’s world record 29-game consecutive league game winning record has proven impossible to match. But, there’s one team with a chance of doing so this season…………

What I don’t get on BRs comment on the Griff is that he has been telling us the Griff is injured for the last few weeks, so an injured Griff needs to be more committed in training, what is going on ?

What I took out of BR’s comments (and I could be wide of the mark) is:

Leigh picks up injuries in games of the kind of high intensity BR wants because he still doesn’t train/diet/prepare/look after his fitness to the standard that BR expects.

To me, Leigh always seems a fit player who leaves nothing out on the pitch, but Brendan knows him a lot better than we do.

  4. A quiet day beckons tomorrow……

BRENDAN RODGERS, the Celtic manager, has made clear no first-team player would be leaving the club on deadline day despite Chelsea’s interest in Craig Gordon and Moussa Dembele.

Rodgers revealed that he expects only Nadir Ciftci to possibly move on, with Efe Ambrose, Kris Commons and Nir Bitton all likely to stay at the club barring any unexpected late developments. The Northern Irishman also does not foresee adding to his squad before the window closes at midnight.

Rodgers expressed his surprise at news of an improved offer for Gordon but categorically refuted any notion that his goalkeeper could leave, “guaranteeing” Gordon would be in the Celtic team to face Aberdeen tomorrow night. “If there’s another bid you know more than me,” he said. “For me it’s always been clear. Craig will be here, he will be in goal on Wednesday night and we want to get him signed up on a new deal, simple as that.

“There are two parts to it. You can only speak to someone if another club meets a valuation of what a player is maybe worth. You don’t willy-nilly let a player go and talk to them. It doesn’t work like that. But the stance is the same. We don’t want to lose him.

“I’ve been brought in to lead the club, look after the football side, and help manage the club. So my job is to protect the club and to build the best team I possible can and that means keeping Craig Gordon. Craig will be in goal on Wednesday night, I guarantee you.”

Rodgers does not expect much in the way of late transfer activity, with Chelsea having been told than only a bid of upwards of £40m would be considered for Dembele. “We’re in total control. There’s no drama. I don’t think we’ll get in what we want to get in. But we’ve got a great squad of players here. Don’t get me wrong, I wanted to strengthen in January. I want to improve the team but only when the right players become available and I just don’t think it’s going to be.”

A permanent transfer for Patrick Roberts also looks unlikely when his loan agreement expires in the summer. “He’ll go back – he’s a Manchester City player. That’s the bottom line.”

You’ll get all this with trump. But the left, liberals and other progressives might just see beyond the gloss that Obama put on it all and fight like f£&@ against the vested interests that trump represents.

The most blatant and hypocritical propaganda within politics recently has been by the BBC.

Laura Kuenssberg’s protracted hatchet job on Jeremy Corbyn (funded by the licence payer) resulted in him getting a larger majority. Their recent coverage of the American Presidency since the inauguration has paralleled this.

I’m no lover of Trump, but I feared for the world if Clinton was elected.

Bernie Sanders, IMHO, was the logical option but the US MSM did for him in the hope that the corrupt war-mongeress would get in.

Now, it is what it is. Again, IMHO, we have plenty of people protesting about issues they don’t fully understand. One placard at a demo agains the latest Executive Order on “banning Muslims” was held aloft stating “I don’t regret my abortion”!

Demonstrate by all means, but at least understand what you are demonstrating against!

Unfortunately, much of this protest is driven by a MSM media with a specific agenda; unless people look for balance, they will get one viewpoint. Very seldom will that viewpoint look to benefit the ordinary working Joe!

He also said a couple of months ago when commending him for training like he was a first choice. Too many inconsistencies coming out, suspect he is being edged out the door and current criticism will be kept up until he’s gone and used to justify his sale.
