World records now beckon for Celtic

605

It was a league game at Tannadice, Hogmanay 1966, which ended the Lisbon Lions 26 game unbeaten domestic run, a record which stood until yesterday. Stein’s Celtic were comfortable and led with 20 minutes to go, but United scored twice in three minutes and before the Champions had time to realise they were in trouble, it was too late.

That’s how historic runs end.

It’s only this season anyone has paid attention to that specific record, such were the overwhelming achievements which unfolded in the months ahead for the men who would become known as Lions. With the League Cup already secured, they added the Scottish Cup and the League title, before becoming the first team to break the Italian-Spanish-Portuguese hegemony on the European Cup.

The serendipity of one of the Lions records falling while we celebrate the 50th anniversary of their great achievements should not be lost.

Season 66-67 wasn’t just about Lisbon. Celtic retained the league for the first time since the Great War – a 50-year gap without defending the league title! They won the treble, the (then competitive) Glasgow Cup, and finished off with a virtuoso performance at the Bernabeu. They changed Scotland forever; nothing would ever be the same again.

Hearts only offered effective opposition for around 5 minutes yesterday, but if/when we lose a domestic game this season, it’s likely to follow the format of St Johnstone’s visit last midweek. St Johnstone defended every Celtic attack bar one and created a chance which could have bounced off the post more generously for them.

All the pressure and superiority in the world are irrelevant in the face of the statistical certainty that, in one game, a dominant team will miss all their chances and concede one of the few they are called to defend.

More records beckon for this Celtic team, not just Scottish ones. Benfica’s world record 29-game consecutive league game winning record has proven impossible to match. But, there’s one team with a chance of doing so this season…………

    dangerous times.

Trump is treating the world stage like a new series of the apprentice.

The only thing I can consistently see in the last 10 days is aggression to countries that dont see it his way. I suspect, China, Russia and maybe Iran (if they have any) are priming their nuclear weapons for defense right now.

Noticed the decline in popularity of American sports like baseball and American football.

The Yanks are going mental for that EPL pish, hence all the major TV networks are bidding silly money to buy the rights.

EPL bubble isn’t about to burst anytime soon unfortunately, not in the foreseeable future anyway.

    Mores the pity.

There seems to be considerable unease and angst about President Trump.

What did the DNC do that propelled him to the White House?

They forgot about middle America, neglected the flyover states and assumed Hillary was a shoe in for coronation.

Despite her capacity to divide and her dubious performance as Secy of State.

They fixed the nomination by securing the “super delegates” and fatally Clinron limited her appearances in what are now seen as “swing” states.

Meanwhile Trump was drawing large crowds in multiple visits to these states.

Hard work, preparation, persistence, constantly pressing.

Sounds like a Brendan Rodgers philosophy.

His work ethic has continued since the inauguration and surprise, surprise he has started to implement the policies he campaigned on.

No need to get our twickers nisted about what he will do.

He’s been telling the electorate and the world for a couple of years.

ESPN have been bidding silly money for sports rights at a time when many people are cutting the cord or downsizing their cable packages.

Nielsen reports they have lost in the region of 20 million subscribers.

Average revenue per cable customer with a package including the ESPN channels is about $80 per annum.

Disney will be restricting their budget in the coming years subsequently reducing their payments to the NFL, MLB and NBA.

    Parallels to Sky Sports perhaps?

‘GG – I’m not entirely sure of the reasons to be honest with you chief.

The decline of the traditional sports is due in some part to the rise in popularity of soccer.

EPL is their league of choice to watch – the scramble for coverage merely reflects this.

Seems now that Chelsea are genuinely determined to buy Moussa.

I have to say all this discussion about Trump leaves me cold. Aye,I was none too happy that he was elected, but as the democratically elected leader of a Sovereign State,he can do whatever he likes, within the confines of the law.

And if he’s told that he’s breaking the law,he can always fire the bearer of bad news.

It’s up to the US to deal with that, not me or anyone else without a vote in it.

He’s not the leader of my country,so my interest in it all is over. I’ll just have to hope the next four years pass rather quickly.

Russia Today, the Green Brigades donation to Palestinian Charities is big news.

Wondering if Liam O’Hare the reporter and going by his accent a local bhoy, would discuss the fake news provided by the Scottish meeja in relation to all things Celtic as a test ed for the bigger meeja departments, would be a laugh if it was raised with examples such as same club and how fake news is nothing new to Celtic supporters.

  19. The hand of God on

If there is any truth in these rumours that Chelsea are offering £30M or over for Dembele Celtic would be crazy to refuse a bid of that size.Of course i would like him to stay for a couple of years before selling him for that kind of money but i don’t think Celtic can refuse a bid of this magnitude…think of Boruc before Euro 2008 the talk was of a transfer fee in the region of £10M he ended up going to Fiorentina for €1M.Strike whilst the iron is hot i’m afraid. When you think of Wanyama,Forster and Van Dijyk Celtic didn’t receive market value for these guys because of the “it’s easy up in Scotland” mentality.

  20. Been listening for weeks now about democratic representation, popular vote, petitions blah blah.

If votes really mattered then we would have UKIP with political representation for their 12.6% >3.8m votes in the last GE.

In contrast the party I voted for ( Labour) got 232 seats for 30% > 9.3m votes.

We all know the rules before we vote.

Plug it into charger and leave it for half an hour, then hold down top power button, this will/should display shutdown option, if no I’m stuck.

  25. The hand of God on

Sorry just to clarify my point i was referring to the EPL attitude to things being easy in Scotland…not my opinion… which usually is reflected in the transfer fees offered considering Tottenham paid FC Twente £18M for Jansen who so far has scored two penalties.Big Virgil seems to be finding it easy in England also.

  26. Don’t think we will sell any first teamers this window.

But wouldn’t be surprised if we do a deal with Chelsea that they have first dibs on Moussa, minimum £30million, in 5 months time.

    The hand…,

I think I understood your point which is why I mentioned the main reason for not getting the “true market value” depends on who comes calling, the three players sold to England all went to the same club and the value was what the Plc were willing to take which could be argued as the “true market value”. Chelsea is the richest club to come calling and the value will reflect that. When we go calling on smaller clubs the value inflates accordingly.

Eurochamp – plug it into the charger for 10 mins then do a hard reset – hold down the power and home button for 10 seconds and hopefully it will reboot.

The other option is plus it into iTunes via a laptop if you’ve ever backed it up and do a restore from there.

You can also do a factory reset via iTunes but that should be last resort as you’ll lose all the data from it.

    good luck!
