World records now beckon for Celtic

605

It was a league game at Tannadice, Hogmanay 1966, which ended the Lisbon Lions 26 game unbeaten domestic run, a record which stood until yesterday. Stein’s Celtic were comfortable and led with 20 minutes to go, but United scored twice in three minutes and before the Champions had time to realise they were in trouble, it was too late.

That’s how historic runs end.

It’s only this season anyone has paid attention to that specific record, such were the overwhelming achievements which unfolded in the months ahead for the men who would become known as Lions. With the League Cup already secured, they added the Scottish Cup and the League title, before becoming the first team to break the Italian-Spanish-Portuguese hegemony on the European Cup.

The serendipity of one of the Lions records falling while we celebrate the 50th anniversary of their great achievements should not be lost.

Season 66-67 wasn’t just about Lisbon. Celtic retained the league for the first time since the Great War – a 50-year gap without defending the league title! They won the treble, the (then competitive) Glasgow Cup, and finished off with a virtuoso performance at the Bernabeu. They changed Scotland forever; nothing would ever be the same again.

Hearts only offered effective opposition for around 5 minutes yesterday, but if/when we lose a domestic game this season, it’s likely to follow the format of St Johnstone’s visit last midweek. St Johnstone defended every Celtic attack bar one and created a chance which could have bounced off the post more generously for them.

All the pressure and superiority in the world are irrelevant in the face of the statistical certainty that, in one game, a dominant team will miss all their chances and concede one of the few they are called to defend.

More records beckon for this Celtic team, not just Scottish ones. Benfica’s world record 29-game consecutive league game winning record has proven impossible to match. But, there’s one team with a chance of doing so this season…………

  1. Now I am confused, not unusual I hear you say, but barely six months ago we were being gleefully told that Peter Lawwell had been put back in his box, sidelined, moved sideways etc. Now we are told he is still pulling the strings. Make your mind up folks.

Also very conveniently some people are selectively quoting Brendan about want more signings and being disappointed not to have got more done but forgetting about his next comment that “this is not always our fault”. Brendan has also said he wants the right player to improve the team not just signings for the sake of placated SSN. Last bit are my words but the sentiment mirrors what he said.

Back to being a board apologising, back of the bus sheep for me.

  2. ” He is a better player than jittery Jozo and bombscare Boyata.”

    Astonishing comment.

I rather dislike those Chelski fellows.

    Hun entitlement.

If Brendan says Moussa stays, he stays, however, if DD and PL sell him, Brendan wont be happy especially as ‘we,ve had six months’ to sort players.

Not sure I think Jozo is ‘jittery’ and would say that in patches he looks potentially step up in class from the other 2 . But still very much a work in progress.

To be fair, if any of the signings turned out to be rubbish they’d automatically be re-named “PL Projects”

Maybe its due to his injuries….but i reckon Jozo can look a bit wobbly and weak at times.

Also….nearly being sold, maybe hints that Brendan doesnt really rate him.

    We will see.

  8. Could someone recommend me an employment lawyer ?

Been recently dismissed and I am now looking for an employment lawyer can’t go into details but I believe I have a strong case so someone who would consider a no win no fee arrangement would be ideal.

    I live in Glasgow

    C,mon give us a signing:)

Brendan might put a brick through the transfer window if they sell Moussa:)

Hope we are working on a wee sneaky one.

Huns must be spewing watching all our multi-million pound players:)

  10. The problem with selling Craig Gordon means having to bed in another goalkeeper and it is difficult to put a price on that. The price of getting it wrong could be upwards of £30m lost CL revenue next season so the sums in risk terms don’t add up.

As regards Dembele the same applies. By the summer he will have been a regular member of a squad that knows how they are expected to play and again CL money could be at risk. However if we don’t qualify what better insurance against CL income loss than a player who might make up at least half of that loss and if we qualify will want to add another season of CL experience to his CV.

This is where football and finance are on common ground and so a no brainer for me.

It’s a no brainer that we keep both of them.

As I said Jozo is a work in progress but I like that progress so far. Mostly. I like Erik too but I think I need more than 3 assured displays against unambitious opponents to be convinced by Dedryk who’d have been 2nd out the door if I’d been advising Brendan lsst summer. Mind you first would have been Stuart Armstrong!

    How are you amigo?

Reading with interest your stuff about football at Cowglen.

Is the Tony Madden you mention another “Mungo Boy?” If so,I also know him and his brother Harry. Both lovely guys from a lovely family.

I knew a few of the guys who played with the team called simply Cowglen.Maybe you know them too.Pat McLuskey,Gordon McPhail,Gordon Smith,John Thompson.

They were part of a Sunday League team I played for called Springvale.

I also played in the Civil Service Saturday Morning League with Springvale.

There were some right good teams and players in that league with guys who wanted to play the game but could also go to a professional game in the afternoon following a pie and a pint in The Alhambra on Waterloo Street.

  19. A picture of Dembele on a plane flying down to London this AM for a knee scan, it’s on a sun newspaper, so I’m not posting it as it upsets some on here, you know what they’r like,

  20. Dembele being at Celtic is a freak of nature in the kindest sense.A 500k Development Fee, a player and an agent who are clever, and see the long game rather than a fast buck.A 20 year old , who has all the tools but is still a wee bit raw.All top clubs are looking for a striker with pace and strength, he is a monster of a boy for his age, with huge potential. If the offer of £30m plus is true, i’m afraid we must take it, take into account, injuries, loss of form, possibly playing in the less hyped Europa League next season, will his value go up any more? I doubt it, we have to sell at the optimum time, which could be today or in the summer.

  21. Sky sports saying dembele in London having scan on knee… hope celtic have some bodyguards to keep Chelsea officials away .

Can’t see Dembele going anywhere at present unless it’s WITH Brendan’s approval.

To risk dismantling a team less than a year into rebuilding and peeing off the best manager we’ve had since M O’N would be a step too far, even for PL.

    ====================

I think Tony was ex Mungo. He had a pal called Charlie Rooney, a tall chap who went off to join the police in Bermuda. I think he also made Lisbon in 67. Tony was another character, full of life.

Yup Pat McCluskey was friends with Hugh McDaid, John McIntyre and Joe Pirret.

Joe was a tough mid fielder but screamed his head of mammy daddy style on the Grand National at Blackpool when Boydstone ventured to St Annes to play a friendly v Bonds Office.

Big Dan was the fitting short name attributed to Gordon McPhail a strong tall brave centre back.

Gordon Smith was Dr Jeckyll off the park and Mr Hyde on it. Made in Scotland from girders and fitter than ten fiddles. They made Cowglen the top team. John Thompson I don’t recall but probable have met him.

I played most my youth foptball on the boydstone rd and at south pollok, the former has 2 pitches wi no change(used be 5 pitches)and cowglen/south polloks 21 pitches have the a77 running thro it. The original idea was to stop players upping sticks and heading off to pastures new when they felt like it often leaving their team in the lurch.
