World records now beckon for Celtic

605

It was a league game at Tannadice, Hogmanay 1966, which ended the Lisbon Lions 26 game unbeaten domestic run, a record which stood until yesterday. Stein’s Celtic were comfortable and led with 20 minutes to go, but United scored twice in three minutes and before the Champions had time to realise they were in trouble, it was too late.

That’s how historic runs end.

It’s only this season anyone has paid attention to that specific record, such were the overwhelming achievements which unfolded in the months ahead for the men who would become known as Lions. With the League Cup already secured, they added the Scottish Cup and the League title, before becoming the first team to break the Italian-Spanish-Portuguese hegemony on the European Cup.

The serendipity of one of the Lions records falling while we celebrate the 50th anniversary of their great achievements should not be lost.

Season 66-67 wasn’t just about Lisbon. Celtic retained the league for the first time since the Great War – a 50-year gap without defending the league title! They won the treble, the (then competitive) Glasgow Cup, and finished off with a virtuoso performance at the Bernabeu. They changed Scotland forever; nothing would ever be the same again.

Hearts only offered effective opposition for around 5 minutes yesterday, but if/when we lose a domestic game this season, it’s likely to follow the format of St Johnstone’s visit last midweek. St Johnstone defended every Celtic attack bar one and created a chance which could have bounced off the post more generously for them.

All the pressure and superiority in the world are irrelevant in the face of the statistical certainty that, in one game, a dominant team will miss all their chances and concede one of the few they are called to defend.

More records beckon for this Celtic team, not just Scottish ones. Benfica’s world record 29-game consecutive league game winning record has proven impossible to match. But, there’s one team with a chance of doing so this season…………

  1. Reported on Facing Book. Moussa Dembele talking to Chelsea on £34m deal

    Hope it’s another unsubstantiated rumour.

  2. Van Dijk is a priority target for Premier League leaders Chelsea this month and Express Sport understands the Blues have already tabled a £60million bid.

  3. Take £35m now?

Wait till summer and get £45m in a multi club auction?

Wait till summer and see Chelsea destabilise MD and offer £25m

Not for sale signs put up and watch MDs career blossom at European club and International level with transfer value soaring.

Not for sale signs put up and watch MDs great strop and huff and non cooperation. Career stalled and transfer value plummeting

Really glad I’m not responsible for deciding.

I suspect player and club planned for the future when he signed!

  4. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

Thought yon french real manager advised MD to stay at Celtic a few years, the implication was him being interested. A wee bidding war would suit us best methinks, maybe someone at real will fire in a late bid :)

Then again, we’re told we don’t publicise negotiations so on that basis it must be made up drivel eh

Started in NSB fifty (yes 50) years ago this month. Played in the Sat. Morning league with the Carolls, Foxy who I think is in photo 1 also T. Madden from Castlemilk, our captain G Gray, J Kennedy.

I think we also put a team into the City and Suburban leagues for a year or two. Played morning and afternoon for a while. That was a league!!!!

Left in Sept 1973 and played for The Mungo FPs that season.

    Must remember some of you.

    ====================

Good morning Sargassosea, just catching up on last night’s posts.

If my memory serves me right your team was DNS who were sponsored by Goldsmiths a jewellers in London Rd leading to the Barras.

The connection there was Joe Kennedy who was in my sister’s class at school and a lovely man. Joe was brought up in the Barras area starting in Kent Street and came from a big family, must have been about nine or eleven children, and that had two amusing consequences one football the other media.

In a rush to get to a Saturday morning game at Huntershill (Joe was always on the go) he or his brother (depending who tells the story) picked up the family washing bag rather than the kit bag. The error was only found out when Joe started handing out knickers and bras and Y fronts in the dressing room. I cannot remember if the game went ahead, but I do remember the following week when I phoned the referees to appoint them to a match that the story had gone all around them from the match day ref in attendance to everyone’s huge amusement. Joe just took it in his stride.

The other was when his brother entered and won a Daily Record competition the prize being a family holiday abroad (Italy?) Anyway the DR get in touch to get family details and Joe’s mum answers the phone.

“Ok Mrs Kennedy” says the DR man “can you give me the names of your family?”

After four names are supplied the DR man interrupts and say “Mrs Kennedy its only immediate family sons and daughters. ”

“That’s what you are getting son” Mrs Kennedy says.

” How many are you? he asks

“Nine (eleven) plus my husband and I .

” I’ll phone you back” says the DR man.

They did an honoured the offer but splashed the story with a family picture all over the front page of the DR where I read it at a bus stop in Eglinton Rd on the way to work to be joined by Joe who gave me the foregoing.

Billy Carrol moved to either St Annes or Durham and sadly passed away a few years back, we played together as did Billy Fox (yup that’s Billy in the pic who moved to Durham) from 66 and won The McFarlane Cup at St Rochs Junior’s. I scored in the semi final and Frank McAleer got the winner in the final. That would be 1968.

Tony Madden was great fun and I played against him in the summer lunchtime fives and I recruited George Gray into my losing 5 a side final team in the following year to win it. (I’m seeing a pattern here)

Great guys. Great memories (if a bit fogged)

I think it is more apt to call the gap ‘prodigious’.

I believe this word will be acceptable to all when discussing The Gap.

The Huns will like it because it sounds nice to them while they will refuse to accept it’s meaning.

    PRODIGIOUS

  8. Or have I been spending too much time reading the blog comments recently and getting me all conspiracist?

  9. A few posters are showing a willingness to sell Dembele if we are offered £30- £40 million. Why?

As far as I am aware, we are astonishingly well off financially in Scotland so we certainly do not need the money to improve our game here so the desire to sell can only be based on a desire to improve in Europe.

If we spent £40 million on two players, would that improve us enough to qualify from a CL group like last year`s?

Would £ 20 million players come to Scotland?

Would the team show the same spirit with a couple of stars on board?

For me,the above scenario is too much of a gamble .

In a nutshell, are we in a better position with Moussa or without him?

    JJ

PS I am willing to be converted to the `selling Moussa is a good thing `view but not on what I have read so far.

  10. Morning all

Choked with cold and already worried I will miss tomorrow

Further on though I am looking forward to us not spending the money we get for CG, MD, KT, ET and whoever else we sell today and the debates on CQN justifying not spending that money. After we all say what a thoroughly bloody good bloke President Trump is for legitimising prejudice and building wall obviously.

    Very sour today

Just reading back, noticed quite a few posters questioning the ‘esprit de corps’ being affected should ‘wantaway keeper’ Craig Gordon end up remaining at CP, albeit on improved terms….

Bear in mind big Jozo was a botched medical away from signing from Torino a few months ago. Its no exactly went south wi’ him back in the side…

    Some short memories on here.

  12. HOT SMOKED on 31ST JANUARY 2017 9:09 AM

Dembele will want to leave at some point. It’s just a matter of when he leaves.

We’ll have to sell but we don’t have to sell now.

I honestly don’t believe we will sell any of the players linked with moves. We haven’t been able to bring in replacements. We won’t risk the CL qualifiers.

Sviatchenko is, in theory, the one we could afford to lose because we have Kolo, Boyata & Simunovic available

    _________

I honestly don’t expect Celtic will sell anybody

Even if we do…. the success on the pitch and the fee’s raised would suggest that the existing strategy is working with Brendan Rodgers at the helm.

KT – A youth player who is now worth millions

MD – A young hungry player signed for buttons who is now worth millions. Celtic were wise to take advantage of the paltry compensation fees.

CG – Somebody who was a free agent after a couple of years out the game. Now worth millions.

  14. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

Main problem I think this window might have highlighted is that BR is not getting the support from behind the scenes that he expects.

He wanted a busy window, with signings for the CL. To that end,I’m quite sure he asked for certain players

    He got one.

Somehow I don’t think he’ll allow that to happen again,or he’ll be off.

  15. Hot Smoked

I suppose it comes down to whether or not you think the scouting and coaching is good enough. £35m could bring in 5 or 6 players around our £1.5-4m sweet spot. Of those, going on our recent record, 3 might end up being £10m+ players.

I personally think the guy from Belgium looks a more exciting prospect than Dembele. What Dembele has going for him is his physical presence, Griffiths is a better goalscorer. The reason Dembele is attracting big interest yet Griffiths always flys under the radar is because he’s suited to the English model of a strong and fairly quick striker.

I love the guy but if you were to ask me who is better with the ball at his feet, first touch, composure, finishing, it would all be Griffiths. It’s like the two ends of the moneyball game with those two. Obviously a large chunk of whatever fee he fetches when he does go will be for his potential.

Tongue was very much in cheek – just anticipating the debates on here if we did. Like being at work without getting paid!

I recognise some of the faces in your 2nd photo.

Wee Frank McFadzean (Faddy) was the year below me at St. Maggie May’s. In the back row, from my year, is Steven Cafferty A couple of other faces look familiar- the 2 boys to Caff’s left and the boy peeking out from behind the bandido- but I could be mistaken and I can’t recall any names for them.

Did Gerry McGlinchey not play for one of the Cowglen teams- I seem to remember him scoring in a cup final I was talked into watching with the promise of a good drink afterwards?

    ==================

    Good morning SFTB.

My Auntie lived in the flats over looking Margaret Mary’s and I used to bus up there in the summer from the Calton to play on the red blaze pitch on a Thursday “club” night.

Faddy had the ability to hover when he rose to head a ball. He was not tall but his timing was such that he beat much bigger players to the jump. Scored great goals for us and was cheeky company.

Steven Cafferty was Mr Perpetual Motion in midfield (and at a party) and the lad to his left was our goalkeeper whose name escapes me but not the huge grin you see in the photo.

One in from the right is “Ommy” so called by Stevie and Frank because one day he opened the door with a half eaten omelette in his mouth. He played on the wing and had the ability to send his tummy one way but the rest of his body the other, mesmerising the opposing full back. Very entertaining to us spectators.

Missing from the picture is John Deans ( Deano) to complete the Castlemilk crew. He played CB and was our hard man when a push came to a quiet elbow in the mouth of an opponent, whist butter would not melt in his. They formed the spine of a great team.

I remember Gerry McGlinchey too and his brother Vince. Gerry was an “up and at em” player and Vince wasn’t, but great company.

NSB must have employed since 1966 to 1990 at least 10K staff moving through including professional footballers or their partners.

Wullie Pettigrew of Motherwell fame met his sweetheart there and married her. I met him at a Motherwell event a couple of years back and they are still going strong. Tommy Rae of Partick Thistle and Aberdeen was there in the early days as was Tommy Yule of Arbroath and Kenny Dalglish’s wife worked at the Bank. Clyde were represented by Brian ??? and that is where my memory runs out of storage space …..

  18. Brendan has looked a bit tetchy these last few days. Hopefully nothing more than usual transfer window stress.

Be hugely disappointing if the club are minded to sell against his advice, or not get target he has identified.

I agree with you to an extent.

I think this has been a quiet window overall. I expect quite a few teams to be frustrated by the end of the window (West Ham, Chelsea and Sevco for example)

I don’t know why…. maybe because of the African nations being played? Some teams would be losing players at a crucial time of the year.

If it is only about money, why did Moussa come to us in the first place? Money is certainly a key component but indications rom Moussa and his agent suggest a season or two with us would be best for both parties.
