The champions did not get out of second gear, and surrendered possession for long period in the second half, but they got the job done without conceding a chance worthy of the name. You get the feeling this squad is pacing itself. You can only climb the mountain so many times.
Jonny Hayes won Man of the Match, largely for his balls into the box. The second goal came from a dangerous Hayes cross between defence and goalkeeper which that Motherwell defender, Richard Tait, felt obliged to intercept, turning the ball into his own net. Jonny sent in an equally good cross a few minutes later, but there were no takers on that occasion.
He was a few weeks shy of his 30th birthday when Brendan Rodgers singed him from Aberdeen: the exact opposite of a ‘Project’, but he is a solid player who did not look out of place in Rome on Thursday night. Cameos at Ibrox and in Rennes earlier this season further demonstrate the £1m spent taking him to Celtic was money well spent.
While Celtic have improved significantly since the early-season 2-5 win at Fir Park, so have Motherwell. I liked the way they knocked the ball around and it was noted to me that the thuggish element, which characterised much of their play in past seasons, was gone. I hope Steve Robinson is does not end up wasting his talent at Tynecastle.

Just finished digging out from a severe dumping of snow yesterday in Toronto.
My reward is that I get to go to work now in a wind chilled temperature of -13° with a leaky boot. 😠

Hoping that the international break is a good opportunity for Griffiths, Johnston & Afolabi to work towards full fitness. Another week for Elhamed to recover. We have a busy few weeks ahead.
To be exact, Celtic have 11 games between the 23rd of November & 29th of December. That’s five weeks and a day. We cannot afford to let up in the league, we have a cup final & 2 Europa ties.
Our best case scenario is, we defeat Rennes & Cluj lose to Lazio. This would mean we have already won the group and can send a second team out to Romania.
Not ideal but who cares? I’m not talking about resting just key players. I’m talking about a team like Gordon, Taylor, Jullien, Bitton, Bauer, Kouassi, Ntcham, Rogic, Mickey Johnston, Lewis Morgan/Shved, Griffiths.
It’s not so much about rotation as we have a winter break to look forward to. It’s managing this squad until the 29th of December that’s crucial.

Our league run is relatively straight forward up to the break. 5 home games and 3 away – County, Hearts and St Mirren. Tynecastle may be tricky but we should be aiming for 8 straight wins in the league to give us a healthy lead going into the shut down.
