A simple lie, compliant Celtic voices and it was job done

381

I was out and about this morning and heard Neil Lennon on the radio making it very clear that he was not about to abandon Bolton Wanderers, despite their inability to pay wages or settle creditors when due. Having “shed millions from the payroll in the summer” his focus was on winning points with a squad augmented by youth development players.

For Neil, the financial realities are simply the parameters he had to work within.

Think back 18 months to when he left Glasgow. Celtic Park was awash with amicable statements from club and manager but the news coverage could not have been more skewed – Neil left because he was unhappy at working within his given budget. We had former Celtic players broadcasting this message that very day. And like every negative Celtic story, it got traction among those more than happy to believe that narrative.

It was nonsense. Celtic’s football budget hadn’t changed. Neil had not adopted a view of himself which only allowed him to deal with more expensive players. What happened was a PR campaign took flight within moments of the news breaking. Dig into Celtic, turn the fans against them. It worked too. A simple lie, a couple (literally) of compliant ‘Celtic’ voices and it was job done.

This has been going on for decades. It’s only recently, with formal PR companies competing for the same demographic, we’ve seen how these messages get into the media.

Celtic have PR to arrange media conferences, distil club news and formal statements. There’s no attempt at subversion, either outwards or at our own demographic.

Saturday is a big day for our Treble Winning Captains. Shortly after Billy McNeil unveils his statue in front of the stadium, Tom Boyd, our only other Treble Winning Captain will be in the Kerrydale Suite, to sign personalised copies of The Winds of Change. The book which covers Celtic managers from Liam Brady to Martin O’Neill, across what was an unforgettable story of redemption.

Joining Tom at the signing session will be Billy’s former team mate, John Hughes. If you get talking to Yogi, just listen. He’s seen it all, so don’t interrupt him.

You’ll be able to buy The Windows of Change, as well as Caesar and The Assassin, the book which documents Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s periods in charge, inside the Kerrydale Suite before kick off.

Club sponsor, Magners, have kindly offered us two Premium Seat tickets for Saturday’s game in the Jock Stein Stand. To enter the competition, what you’ve got to do is email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com with the name of the team we’re playing in the email Subject Line.  Competition closes at 18:00 TODAY, so it’s only open for a short window….

…………while you are entering the competition. You might want to take an extra minute and donate £1 to our Mary’s Meals school kitchen project. You have already built four kitchens in Malawi. These donations go towards putting food on the table.  You can donate here.

Around 75% of people who enter donate something – thank you.

The reasoning behind 2011/12 is fair enough but why the sustained silence now?

The LNS decision should have been our green light & the current stance of waiting for leave of appeal makes little sense.

  2. Paul67,

Let’s not blame the media for the deserved criticism of Celtic , Desmond, Lawwell for the CL failures and the £50M loss of revenue. I hope you haven’t been taking the mint topped Celtic lamb with that nonsense in your lead article.

Lawwell has failed spectacularly with the absence of our only competitor. We have went back the way and the Media is not the culprit.

    =================

It does if you read this based on minutes of SPL Board meeting.

    http://archive.sfm.scot/how-not-to-govern-scottish-football/

In short legal advice swayed the SPL Board to accept the Decision. That advice would have been impossible had the true illegal/unlawful nature of the DOS EBTS been made known to LNS.

It was a stitch up that has turned into an almighty cock up and made matters 10 times worse.

  6. There has been good quality debate on the blog these past few days. It is pure co-incidence that I have been largely absent during that time.

A few prominent posters (Awe Naw, Kitalba and Maggie McGill) concluded long ago that the existence of the 5 way agreement or the seeming meek acceptance of the 5 way agreement proved that Celtic were complicit and culpable.

Others like Auldheid have offered hope that Celtic feel they were an injured party and are looking to cooperate with efforts to untangle the position that has been reached.

And some like Tony Donnelly argue that the Resolution 12 guys are being duped and used by the Celtic Board who have no intention of doing anything to support this fight.

There is evidence for and evidence against all of these positions. Basically, for most of us, the jury is out and when the verdict is delivered that either clears Celtic of being complicit or proves that they were, then crunch time will come.

We have already been put to the test. On the 1st February 2015, in a League Cup semi final, a crowd of 50,925 turned up at Hampden to see Celtic beat a very weak Sevco by 2 goals to nil. The Celtic end was full. I was not there and I had been offered a ticket. I do not see those Celts who did turn up as traitors to anything. Some were conflicted- some never were- and some did not even know that there was anything to feel conflicted about.

However, I can understand why some of the Celtic Board might have thought that a lot of the absent fans who complained of no excitement, and had taken to watching games in the pub, were really quite easily tempted back by the prospect of a non-challenging game against Sevco.

A little later at the League Cup final, which I did attend- (fickle? me? maybe), I heard in a crowded toilet two Celtic fans saying “I cannot wait until we play Them again”- not one voice was raised in disapproval- not even mine.

Walking away from Celtic? Starve them of my money? That would sound like the “right” thing to do, if it could be proved that the Board were complicit in the Buns cheating. Aye that would be the morally correct thing, the logical thing. Disney work like that for me though. I love Celtic, and love is blind and stoopid, and disney take heed of logic, or the moral high ground.

I never mentioned boycotting the club btw.

I would boycott another club in a heartbeat tho, it would waken them up to how much power the Celtic support actually have, and it would imo force their hand, take away what they want, they will do anything to get the money.

Auldheid and I have argued long and hard about Celtic’s part or not on the 5WA.

I firmly believe that they knew what it was all about, they had to, they were on the SPL board at the time, and the SPL approved the agreement, end of.

Now Auldheid can answer for himself, but he well knows that is the case, but his caveat is what you have mentioned.

The bigot pound is all encompassing, there is too much to lose to the game, and that is the crux of the matter.

When the prospect of millions leaving the coffers of the game is at stake, all bets are off, they must survive at all costs.

  21. I haven’t attended since LNS, that was the final straw for me. I still have my shares, still watch on tv, and follow all news on the Internet. I will no longer pay to be cheated however, it comes down to a personal pride matter. I couldn’t live with a wife who was cheating on me. So until honours are removed that were won fraudulently, I don’t feel I can give my support.

It is killing me, but like a child, sometimes you have to show it tough love in the hope it gets the message. I hope our board get that message.

  24. Leaving aside the title stripping and SFA cheating.

If Sevco win the league then there is little we can do about their presence in the premiership next season.

My worry is that the latest PR campaign by Level5 is preparing us for Sevco not winning the championship whether by merit or default because of an administration event.

And lets face it they can win the league as they control the referees to a large extent so the latter, admin points deduction seems to be what they are worrying about and hence the “we need a strong league..” etc. etc.

A couple of years ago I sent a registered letter to Pedro outlining my displeasure at the ongoing cheating within the game.

I posted the letter on here and was slaughtered for it, basicly I said that unless the club challenged the cheating, the rule breaking, I and my family would no longer contribute any more money to the clubs coffers, it is in the reigon of £1200 a year, not a great amount, but enough if quite a few did the same.

No reply from the bold Pedro.

They are complicit imo, they have been forced to act re Res 12, they accepted what the sfa told them, had it not been for the likes of the Canman, Auldheid et all feck all would have happened, if it is happening, I still have my reservations if it will out.

  29. Gooood evening CQN

A lot of good discussion on what should be done going forward, with regards Scottish Football being cheated, and we as fans have been cheated. The rules of the game were broken.

I have no idea how a liquidated club can claim to be still part of our game.

And more importantly how a brand new club was voted into the Scottish leagues, bypassing many others who have applied previously, why was this never raised with the FTSFA ? Or Scottish Football Leagues ?

For the past few years, whereby I have retained my 2 season tickets, I have not attended a league cup or Scottish Cup game, I will never return to Hamdump, I have not been to any Celtic away game.

My money is funding Celtic only.

I also believe Celtic need to be very very careful on how this is played out, they may be banking on fans returning if Sevco ever get into the big league, they really need to be considering the numbers who may not return if this new club are accepted back.

I for one will seriously consider my position, I will not pay anymore if Sevco get into our league, as I will JT be at the games, so would be giving up my 2 tickets

I also believe it is time Celtic Board let us know their intentions, many may also gave up on their season tickets if silence continues

But hey Dermot, you will get an 7000 news fans twice per season, is that worth more than the 7000 ( hazarding a guess here) who may give up their season tickets decision time will be around May

LNS is a SPFL issue. Celtic need to carry the votes of the other clubs. That will depend on what the supporters of those clubs are willing to accept.

Its why all LNS stuff is on SFM and not here. It effects all clubs.
