Absurd Rummenigge, Regan

435

When Juventus scored in the opening minutes in the away leg of their last 16 Champions League tie last night it felt familiar. It’s just three years since you and I saw them in person do the same thing at the same stage of the competition.

It took Bayern Munich 70 minutes to rebound but we’ve not really recovered from a lapses in a tie which could otherwise have been far closer than the five goal margin it turned into. Getting back onto the same field with the likes of Juventus after Christmas (or even after August) is now the big challenge. It will take some doing.

I liked Karl-Heinz Rummenigge as a player but as a Usurper of Meritocracy he’s falling well down my list. He celebrated both teams after last night’s game before asking how long Uefa would countenance teams like Juventus exiting the competition at this stage? Not only would he like clubs like his get guaranteed entrance to the competition, he feels that elimination in March should is too harsh a consequence for losing.

I’m sure Rummenigge was being deliberately absurd last night. He’s trying to provoke alarm before playing his hand.

John Clark, on Scottish Football Monitor, attended SFA chief executive Stewart Regan’s presentation at Edinburgh University yesterday on values and integrity in football. Mr Clark questioned Mr Regan on whether Rangers failure to pay overdue social taxes in 2011 broke Uefa competition eligibility rules. Clark informs us Regan said he would do “Nothing” if incontrovertible evidence was available that social taxes were unpaid and that debt collectors had been employed.

We have a criminal lack of oversight in Scotland, not just in football.  This attitude would not be possible in London.

The spirit of Jack Warner, Sepp Blatter and so many others is alive and well at Hampden. This is what we’re up against, and remember people, Blame the Victim is the hottest game in town, it doesn’t matter if you don’t know the background, anyone can play.

I don’t travel to Glasgow or glue myself to the Telly for love of Lawell, Desmond or the Board, it’s all about a Green & White Hooped Jersey.

Once it’s less then 48 hours to a game, I just want to focus on football, my immediate priority is 3 points against Kilmarnock, after that I’ll tune into the Res 12 debate again.

Sorry, I am not trying to tiptoe around anything so will try and make things plain.

Celtic have been involved in this all the way through and their Company Secretary (whom I knew professionally long before anything to do with Res 12 and long before he joined Celtic) has been particularly helpful in terms of encouragement and strategies etc.

Those who collected the signatures to the Resolution, were asked by many that their individual names and addresses would not be made public and sent to anyone without prior authority. Those requests and instructions must be honored, and so when it comes to instructing solcitors and those solicitors saying on whose behalf they act upon, you are left in a little difficulty because you can advise the solicitors of all the names and addresses behind Res 12 but the same solcitors can’t reveal those names and addresses to the SFA in correspondence.

Now, we anticipated that the SFA would not answers an “anonymous” letter written on blank paper and so a major legal firm was engaged to handle the correspondence.

The Celtic Co. Sec then discussed ideas as to how we get round the names and addresses problem by making a number of suggestions — as I say he is a good guy, wanted to see the thing fly and was trying to help us get round an SFA fudge.

Regan is trying to get us to name all the people behind Res 12 — or is hiding behind the fact that they are not named and so cites the whole thing as a complaint by people who hide behind twitter and blog names.

He knows fine well that this is a serious line of enquiry but seeks to cheapen and lessen it. He shows no respect for the solicitors involved and less for the fans who have engaged those solicitors.

As to what to do now?

I honestly think the club should take over from the resolution 12 people.

The board originally said the Resolution was “not necessary” – what say they now?

I am no further forward in understanding why they want the Resolutioners to make a complaint that they will support but not make themselves.

I am told all sorts of other things might be happening at UEFA but surely simply asking UEFA to investigate the implementation of their own rules is not going to bring European Football to a halt? They do it every day and have a specific protocol and committee to do it.

Beyond that — fans should force the hand of the SFA as they see fit.

Write to Regan, Boycott games, write to the newspapers (ha)

There is no governance here and there is no leadership.

The Res 12 guys will take it to UEFA but I tell you now it will land straight back in the lap of Celtic and the SFA and by Celtic not taking the lead makes them look weak I think — but that is just my opinion.

An alternative is to draw up a general mandate addressed to the solicitors concerned and have as many people sign it and send it in to them allowing the solicitors to say they act on behalf of x hundred shareholders and advise that theu have the names and addresses for all of them if the SFA lawyers would like to come and inspect the files etc.

Given Regan’s serious statement that he would do nothing if the CFCB were misled or that proper procedures were not followed, then the clubs should really bedealing with all of this as a matter of urgency.

Failing which, people like me, and many others I know, will just give up on professional football altogether — and that includes giving up on Celtic as they will have ceased to be the kind of club they were originally intended to be and I would want them to be.

At that stage you simply go do something else.

*Fully concur cc, after reading on here and other Celtic sites, if for some reason the Board, in an effort to protect our investment, are unable tae pursue this any further as the whole game would collapse thereby leaving us with a huge stadium tae upkeep and no meaningful games I would accept that only if Morecambe and Wise were sent homeward tae think again and decent, honest men and/or women were put in place to run the game.

Add to the two you have mentioned, McCoist who could not win a Petrofac Cup but he passes judgement and feels qualified to do so on a manager who won the SPL and the League cup in his first season is going for another league this year, the world is upside down when clowns like Mccoist are given a microphone to spout S…e as long as it is anti -Celtic.

I wonder what the Level 5 bill is for this season for sevco?

  13. Thanks for that, BRTH.

I have nothing but praise for the tenacity and patience of you and the other leading lights of the Res 12 group.

That said, I see you’re still studiously avoiding any overt criticism of the Board!

To everyone else, it appears at best lazy, at worst cowardly, and either way massively risky of PL and the Board to pass the bick in this way, full in the knowledge that the stakes are as high as they undoubtedly are.

Like you, I’m now seriously considering my involvement in Scottish top flight football …

Mr. Regan is likely to have a Directors and Officers insurance policy to protect him for personal liability in the event of a claim against him personally for legal fees or damages for acts or omissions which he has undertaken in the course of his employment.

Mr Regan should be reminded that deliberate acts or omissions which he has committed which cause loss to another party are excluded from such cover and liability would fall on him and his personal assets.

I think I have honestly made it plain that I think the board should be takeing this on.

If they don’t that will be huge failing in my opinion and a mistake.

If there is a good reason for not doing it I am yet to hear it or be convinced by it.

But I say again the main focus should be, and always was, on bringing the SFA to heel and ensuring that they apply the rules properly.

  18. Watched the Ronny press conference there . This guy gives them his time , he is honest and courteous towards them , yet they subject the guy to questioning like that . I would love to see him withdraw his co operation with them , and davy hay stand in for him . His club should be protecting him . But what can we expect from that bunch
