Absurd Rummenigge, Regan

435

When Juventus scored in the opening minutes in the away leg of their last 16 Champions League tie last night it felt familiar. It’s just three years since you and I saw them in person do the same thing at the same stage of the competition.

It took Bayern Munich 70 minutes to rebound but we’ve not really recovered from a lapses in a tie which could otherwise have been far closer than the five goal margin it turned into. Getting back onto the same field with the likes of Juventus after Christmas (or even after August) is now the big challenge. It will take some doing.

I liked Karl-Heinz Rummenigge as a player but as a Usurper of Meritocracy he’s falling well down my list. He celebrated both teams after last night’s game before asking how long Uefa would countenance teams like Juventus exiting the competition at this stage? Not only would he like clubs like his get guaranteed entrance to the competition, he feels that elimination in March should is too harsh a consequence for losing.

I’m sure Rummenigge was being deliberately absurd last night. He’s trying to provoke alarm before playing his hand.

John Clark, on Scottish Football Monitor, attended SFA chief executive Stewart Regan’s presentation at Edinburgh University yesterday on values and integrity in football. Mr Clark questioned Mr Regan on whether Rangers failure to pay overdue social taxes in 2011 broke Uefa competition eligibility rules. Clark informs us Regan said he would do “Nothing” if incontrovertible evidence was available that social taxes were unpaid and that debt collectors had been employed.

We have a criminal lack of oversight in Scotland, not just in football.  This attitude would not be possible in London.

The spirit of Jack Warner, Sepp Blatter and so many others is alive and well at Hampden. This is what we’re up against, and remember people, Blame the Victim is the hottest game in town, it doesn’t matter if you don’t know the background, anyone can play.

A busy day so I’m just catching up. Thanks for your personal analysis and interpretation of all things Res12.

I thought about boring you to tears with my own interpretation but I’ll spare you!

Basically, Celtic Plc have no desire or intention of taking the necessary steps to have the licensing issue dealt with.

You know my views; there never, ever was any intention.

This board have deceived the Celtic support on a grand scale.

And yet now Wales are claiming Patrick spoke Welsh! Surely Dumbarton would be Dunbarton if that was the case?

*when I was at school St Patrick’s Day was a holiday in Dumbarton, St David’s Day wisnae.

There were 3 St Patrick’s schools, 2 Primary and 1 High School and the parish church, where my Irish grandparents were married and my da was baptised, was consecrated to St Patrick in 1851.

Other towns, villages and hamlets in Dunbartonshire don’t have a holiday that day.

Lot of history there! Thanks for your post on page 1, very informative. Important always to stress the ancient links between Scotland and Ireland, and that is one of the most important ones. Many many Scottish place names owe that to the Irish Saints. Even East Kilbride!

Watching Man U V Liverpool it dawned on me (after watching Bayern v Juventus yesterday) that Europa League is EPL level. Its good to be a feeder club for EPL Europa league standards.

  11. Neganon, I’d love to put the clock back but it can’t be done. Celtic has changed a lot since it’s founding days and is likely to change further in the years ahead, We all have limits of tolerance in how much change we can accept. From your posts it’s clear that your level of tolerance has already been exceeded, you and I both know that the Club will never get back to where you want it to be, If you can’t accept that you should walk away.

I still believe that Celtic represent an identity and a people. I see it on this blog and I see it when I go to Glasgow. It’s this sense of identity and kinship that draws me in.

If that goes for me then I’m out but I don’t expect it to happen in my lifetime.

F**k Desmond, Lawell, The Board & the SFA, they will not stop me from supporting the team that I love and they will not separate me from the people I love.

You are included amongst those people Neg even though you seriously piss me off.

Back in sept 2001 just before the twin towers changed the world for ever Louis van Gaal brought Holland to Dublin for a world cup qualifier.

Holland were on paper the much better team but Roy Keane clobbered overmars with the first tackle of the game. Our other major asset that day was Richard Dunne the world champion centre half and clearing high balls into the box. Anyway 2nd half we are 1 up and down to 10 men. Van Gaal ends up with about 4 centre forwards on the pitch and proceeds to pump high balls towards them.

Not since the coward general percival surrendered signapore to the Japanese has such tactical ineptitude been demonstrated

  14. Evening folks,

Been reading BRTH’s posts about resolution 12 with growing sadness, disappointment and anger at the Celtic board. For many years I’ve followed our beloved Celtic, sometimes going to the games at home and away, sometimes on TV and Radio.

Like many Celtic supporters, my love of Celtic came from my Father, but as I became older I was gripped by the Celtic idea. An idea of trying to play the game in a certain fashion, playing fair, and hard if the occasion merited.

Like a lot of my fellow posters, as well as a financial investment, the emotional investment to the team has been complete and faithful. We always knew what we were up against in this country, but it was the way we rose above the bile that separated us from them. Our ultimate achievement in Lisbon still lives on in our hearts to this day. But who would have thought the defeat in Seville would also have brought pride as well. Pride in the way the fans conducted themselves, despite the bitter pill of defeat, but we would not expect anything else.

I lived through and went to most games during the dead teams 9 in a row. Took the derision at work after the Raith Rovers and ICT defeats. Then enjoyed the MON years.

But to learn in the last four years the scale of corruption by the dead team and the collusion of the authorities is quite staggering and one of the biggest football stories to hit the planet in recent years. You would not know these facts if it was not for the “internet bampots”. No surprise how the MSM is playing down this affair.

So to come back to BRTH’s recent posts, it looks like the club are kicking resolution 12 into the long grass.

It’s beyond belief that after all the cheating that has gone on and been proved that they have not come out with some sort of statement/action to at least let us fans know they are on the same wavelength as us. How can they expect us to buy season tickets in the knowledge of what has gone on? Why should we watch a team where the game if corrupt?

Glasgow Rangers were liquidated. They are dead and their titles won are gone. There no continuation, simple as that! If the Celtic PLC do not come out and acknowledge this simple fact before next season then I like BRTH will do something else. It will break my heart, but what else is there to do?

  16. A belated St Patrick’s Day greeting to all CQNers. Watched the New York Parade on Irish TV today. Have been there once myself and it is a wonderful feeling being involved. Noted a Celtic jersey in one of the County groups.

At least three bands played Sean South and though there were hundreds of NY cops walking in the Parade no one arrested the bandsman/women. Oh, forgot, it is only in Scotland that you cannot be truly Irish. FOCUS would have not been amused. But then only Scotland do we have strange laws that do no protect the rights of many of people living here.

    What Is The Stars

Had one of the best natural goalscorers in Europe – Hernandez. First year loaned him out. Then sold him. Now has a collection of full-backs to try to change the game. Bizarre…

  18. Dan – brilliant post.

There are 2 things looming large on the horizon for Celtic.

We have the Resolution 12 issue. And when it’s reached the stage that even BRTH is voicing doubts over our Board’s reluctance to act proactively then we really are in a critical position.

And in just a few weeks, the next big thing will be upon us – season ticket renewals. This is where I’ll be particularly looking to see whether our club change any of the current arrangements just because a particular team is about to join the top division for the first time.

I’d love to think that our renewal packs would simply be in line with the last couple of years – maybe a wee rise for inflation but simply a package to cover all home league games and a couple of freebies. Whilst that’s my wish, realistically I think we all know that won’t happen, primarily due to the likelihood that we will give Triggers Broom FC’s fans about 7,500 seats (to rip up?) when they come visiting.

However, our club need to be very careful in how they market the tickets for next year. Any reference whatsoever suggesting that a team are ‘coming back’, ‘returning’, ‘renewing rivalries’ etc will run the serious risk of many fans not renewing.

If no special favours are given, no mentions are made then I’d fully expect to renew as normal. But I think a lot of us will be looking and listening a bit closer than normal this year.

The 2 cup ties that will have taken place by then will have been under the auspices of the SFA/SFL and so, to a degree, our club could argue that they weren’t in control of things like build up promotions, programme notes etc. But when we finally have to entertain them at our own home there’s really no excuse.

How did it ever come to this?

Nevertheless (for now at least) – 2 more sleeps, batter Killie and total support for Ronny and the team.

    Fantastic post!

Your last paragraph explains lucidly and exactly why Celtic will not follow up on res 12. It will force the “authorities” (SFA) to admit that the team playing at Ibrox are not Rangers which they will not do.

I just want to see our club back us in the truth. The SFA, the MSM, I don’t give a feck about them, but if the club show some guts, it will be a start. We are being hammered by the MSM on a daily basis anyway, so we might as well get stick for telling the truth. I agree with you buddy, if Celtic do not handle these coming months correctly they are in for a big shock in my humble opinion.

*cheers, here’s another wee connection for you:

One of the descendants of St Patrick’s converts is St Columba who is credited as being a leading figure in the revitalization of monasticism in Scotland. Along with 12 companions he left his native Donegal landing in Iona which is a dedicated holy isle, where he was successful in converting the native pagan Picts.

Iona is adjacent to the Isle of Mull, another holy isle, where Eleanor Farjeon (1881 – 1965) who converted to RC, wrote the beautiful hymn “Morning Has Broken”.

Today the Knights of St Columba a Catholic fraternal service organisation founded in Glasgow in 1919 is named in honour of Saint Columba. The organisation describes itself as being dedicated to the principles of Charity, Unity and Fraternity, there are more than 4,300 members of the KSC, in over 240 councils across Great Britain.

I’m just a bog average Tim, nothing more or less. PL is the CEO of Celtic Football Club so he should have no reason to listen, or pay any heed to, anything I say.

However, I looked into his eyes and suggested to him two things.

    1) give the new mob no more than 2,000 tickets at any game at Parkhead.

    2) keep the season ticket price the same, including maintaining the children’s ST, inclusive of all 19 league game.

    He hummed and he hawed.

Then he hawed a bit more.

Sadly, really sadly, it won’t happen.
