Bucking underperforming recruitment trend

629

Every year we hear that January is a difficult time to do transfer business. Clubs are reluctant to allow top performers to leave midseason, but we’ve had some creative January activity over the years. Objectives for this month are clear.

We need to better prepare for our Summer Cup Finals. Trying to build a defence, or strike force, while simultaneously qualify for the Champions League is, unsurprisingly, tricky. Summer transfer windows are really two periods, the last days of the month, after European qualification has been taken care of, and earlier in the window, when limited volumes of business will take place.

We’ve done some great business early in summer months, most notably Virgil van Dijk, but instances like this are rare.

The most interesting aspect of this window will be how Ronny Deila is backed. He’s 18 months in the job now, long enough to come to an assessment of the wider scouting infrastructure he inherited. We’ve been underperforming on recruitment since January 2012. Ronny needs to buck this trend, and Celtic need to give him the necessary lateral.

I honestly believe that most are not influenced but only my opinion and I respect yours. A minority yes, but increasing minority?

Perhaps it’s no coincidence that the increasing voices of dissent coincides with a very poor run of results for the bhoys? No doubt when we are struggling the media jump on the opportunity to twist the knife, so maybe as they turn up the hate it seems to be having a negative effect on the fans.

I’ve genuinely not seen a paper for months, so I’ve no idea what is being said, but I can imagine.

I’m not happy with what’s going on at CP as I see this as a downward trend as opposed to bad results, but maybe I’m wrong and there will be some action taken to get us moving back in the direction we all hope for.

I genuinely hope my concerns are misplaced and you can come at me with all guns blazing in an ‘ I told you so’ assault.

The opposite outcome does not bear thinking about.

Damn right, mate. I’ve noticed it getting Mowbrayesque again over the last nine months or so.

Not just their performances, but their appointments. Yon Madden madman has been at more of our home games than my Dad-and he’s a season ticket holder!

It occurred to me-it gets ramped up again next season-wi Sevco in the league-and we start getting shirty about it,the MSM hammer us. It’s no different from before, only difference is ‘Rangers are back(boak),what are you afraid of?’

Aye,I’m paranoid. I’m fiftytwo years old. That’s plenty of time to wise up to their crap.

Seriously, the time to hit this MIB attack on us has been every year of our existence,I’ll grant you. But next year will be too late.

  5. Some supporters I am sure are influenced by the media. But I doubt many of those who attend, sit dumbfounded for 90 minutes wondering at setup, tactics, substitutions etc… are influenced by anything but their own two eyes. You see when attending you only judge with what you see and not by what radio puddingdit, TV commonhuntator, or sports PR says.

It’s there. Blatant and obvious weekly.

But hey Ronny is a nice guy so all’s good.

That said, change of management is pointless without a change in policy, plan or people above.

So it’s suck it up or walk time! That is the basic choice.

To be fair, not all footballers are ‘born athletes’. Their natural frame is for felling trees!

If I’m honest,I have to give respect to those who have had to work on their weight as much as on their frame. There are plenty of examples.

The other side of the coin is those who had to work to bulk out. Christiano Ronaldo, for one.

And Henrik. He didnae develop those neck muscles without some serious time in the gym. And it paid off when he put his head on a ball.

Morning Bhoys the January transfer window may be a good indication of how much the board support Ronny if we spend decent money and bring in a couple of quality players I believe that would show the board are still supportive. However if we dont bring in anyone or a couple of out of contract players come in that may indicate the board are losing faith in him.I still support Ronny and believe he is the man for the job I havnt seen one of the get rid of Ronny brigade come up with a single sensible and available manager to replace him. Ah, the old 9-0 v’s the Dons…..well, as I said at the time to SFTB….

Give McGhee the Celtic team that Neil had at his disposal and, give Neil the p#shy team that McGhee had at Aberdeen and…what would the score have been ?

Point is…McGhee didny get the Celtic job coz….he was too cute for PL & JP…..where as, Neil was a young pup…straining at the leash to become a Celtic manager and… amazingly, or not….Lawwell got away with presenting Neil as the No.1 target for the job…amazingly?….Nothing amazing about it….Lawwell knew that the support were in a state of disillusioned apathy after Lawwell’s BTM disaster. A manger like Big McGhee would have told Lawwell that he was putting on his jaikit if there was any interference and, that he’d hold a press conference to tell the fans exactly why!….None of this, confidentiallity-sneaky-masonic-clauses to tell all the fans that the garden is rosy when ye leave.

    Big McGhee

    Roy Keane

    John Collins

    Owen Coyle

    Mick McCarthy

All of the above have cojones so….they’ll be nowhere near the Celtic managers job.

Lawwell is killing the club with his background-clique-stranglehold on the Celtic cash register….only Celtic fans, denying him the funds for his racket…will save Celtic but, I think…sadly…that it’ll take a year of cheating-mibbery from the huns to win the league next season to open a lot, an awful lot….of apathetic Celtic supporters eyes….I hope I’m wrong.

I think we’re pretty much at the base level now barring an absolute disaster. We’ve had comments that loads will walk over various issues in the last few years but it never really happens.

It’s clear that RDs preferred formation doesn’t always work that well against teams that get 10 men behind the ball. It’s when they don’t that we instantly start to look and perform much better.

Some will say that’s to his detriment, but I’m actually kind of glad that he’s so stubborn. Why should we stop trying to play football just because the opposition refuses to? Ultimately we’re still winning the overwhelming majority of games.

Collins would boot the Kris Commons-cliques erses right oot the Parkhead gates…then, we’d get some order in the dressing room, Collins would play with 2 strikers and a, rotating midfield that would create chances for the strikers and not make the strikers look like numpties….imho

Bobby Murdoch. I have always believed wither it be in business or sport and nowadays they are the same thing before you get rid of a team member you should have a better candidate lined up as his or her replacement. To often we see people being removed from there jobs but the incoming replacement is no better that the person they replaced.I believe Ronny is a young manager with a bright future now wither that future is with Celtic I do not know but I do believe he currently is the best manager available to us. H.H.

  22. CultsBhoy can not relate to Celtic Board ambitions on or off the park on

so as I said last night we are hoping to buck a trend..?

A trend in my understanding is a pattern of behaviour.

If we are hoping that those who have set that pattern in play will make the change – we will not buck any trend.

I agree that just changing the manager is unlikely to bring any structural change but I’m certain there are some other SPFL/ Championship managers who could get more out of the talent we currently have in the playing staff.

I have to say reports that we are scouting in Portugal or wherever makes my heart sink – I feel another £1.5M mediocrity on the way.

If Ronnie were to leave today – how many better offers would he have arriving on his desk tomorrow? In fairness to Ronnie his replacement would cost more than he is getting. You get what you pay for.

Lawwell on the other hand would have plenty offers – he’s a CEO who would be right for clubs seeking stability he can manage a budget but he would not be the choice for clubs seeking progressive, visionary growth strategy. Right now this is what Celtic is crying out for. My guess is we’d get one of those for the money we pay PL – probably less.

I think it is universally accepted that strong vocal support helps a team on the park.

I believe that to be true.

However, I mean the full throated roars of encouragement, not verses of songs. Keep that for the half time entertainment!

We all remember the cup tie against RFC, when the second half kicked off, to a background of YNWA.

The normal kick off roar wasn’t there and they went up the park for Rickson to score.

Recently, at the Malmo home game, when we went 3-1 up, the party in the stands began.

I felt uneasy at that and voiced my concerns to my son.

To me, it looked that the team were influenced by the crowd and they, too, thought that it was job done.

Therefore if concentrated vocal support focusses the team, then premature celebrating surely has the opposite effect.

So, you can add that theory to the reasons for the Malmo Debacle.

  26. JFH-Mick McCarthy, but he might be too strong a personality for Lawwell to handle. Whether he can be bothered with the aggravation from the gang,is questionable. HH
