Bucking underperforming recruitment trend

629

Every year we hear that January is a difficult time to do transfer business. Clubs are reluctant to allow top performers to leave midseason, but we’ve had some creative January activity over the years. Objectives for this month are clear.

We need to better prepare for our Summer Cup Finals. Trying to build a defence, or strike force, while simultaneously qualify for the Champions League is, unsurprisingly, tricky. Summer transfer windows are really two periods, the last days of the month, after European qualification has been taken care of, and earlier in the window, when limited volumes of business will take place.

We’ve done some great business early in summer months, most notably Virgil van Dijk, but instances like this are rare.

The most interesting aspect of this window will be how Ronny Deila is backed. He’s 18 months in the job now, long enough to come to an assessment of the wider scouting infrastructure he inherited. We’ve been underperforming on recruitment since January 2012. Ronny needs to buck this trend, and Celtic need to give him the necessary lateral.

    That’s what we did.

Been and gone and done the virtually impossible in Norway, that’s a footy manager or coach imo

    Who would you choose ?

Mind all the constraints that any coach will be under……

the problem is that when Celtic do employ a football manager they invariably quit due to meddling.

The question was. ..is there one celtic supporter who can point out one example of ronny improving the team in his 18 months in charge. Bgx asked that

Can you give me one example of improvement ?

As for who I would replace him with. That’s irrelevant. If we can’t do better than Ronny god help us

A cardboard cut out of George Graham and a tape recording of rousing speeches by Winston Churchill would be an improvement.

    And that’s sad

If there is one thing I’ve learned in life it’s that you stick by your decisions. If you believe in something you keep going no matter how bad it gets.

We have been going nowhere as a football club for years, our performances in Europe have been dire under both Ronny and under Neil in his last European adventure.

I’m not a fan of PL and would like to see a change at the club as I feel he’s been in his position to long and a change of CEO would be good for the club as a whole.

Appointing RD though was thinking outside the box and most of us were genuinely excited about what lay ahead. This season in Europe has been an absolute disaster though and our current form is a shambles and against Motherwell it was simply embarrassing.

For me though it’s not the tactics it’s the players and to a degree the crowd that have let us down. Does anyone seriously think RD doesn’t see what we see when the gaps appear in our defence?

I’ve said before that now that we don’t have RFC(IL) in our league some teams, such as Aberdeen, will potentially be 12 points better off a season and this will give them encouragement going forward. It’s telling that even though we are such a bad team with shit tactics and a crap manager we are still ahead in the league and in 2 cup competitions.

It takes nerve to change things and it also takes time, things don’t always go your way but if you cave in and appease the crowd the only thing you’re doing is starting again no further forward.

Ronny will win the league this year, let him change our club and give him time to do it. Rome wasn’t built in a day.

    Do you honestly believe that

Or are you just refusing to admit that we( the support) were sold a lie by the club.

The lie being that this was a new direction, employing an exciting young coach with lots of great ideas about how to play the game and compete successfully at European level, etc

Truth is he was probably the cheapest option

That’s an insult to you and me and every celtic supporter.

We will win the league. We start the season as bookies favourite at ridiculous odds of 1/ 40.

It would be really hard to take if we didn’t win it.

I really am amazed at the amount of support there is for ronny.

How much of it is just blind loyalty and how much is based on analytical thought

I saw a team on Saturday who in the last 10 mins of the game were given the support from the crowd that every Celtic team should expect and they responded.

CQN is like some of those that sit around me, constantly giving players a hard time instead of giving encouragement.

I recall a poster a few days ago mentioning Martin O’Neil having a dig at the negative fans and how it hindered players, the vocal support of our team on Sat produced an unlikely result. Maybe some of you will learn from that though I doubt it.

  10. Stars

No, that was not the question.

You decided that was the question, BGX, you can do better that that ffs.

And it’s not irrelevant, you want him gone, give an alternative, I have given two coaches I would replace him with if they do bin him.

With respect, all the RD want to change posters have offered feck all to any change other that he is pish, the more this goes on the more the hun like entitlement comes to the fore, and deny it for all you are worth mi amigo, but you know what I am saying.

We are a pish team in a pish league, wtf are you expecting ?

The suits give not a toss, the money comes first, change that and maybes we can look to the future.

What is the Stars all I see and hear are so called fans offering no support on match days at Celtic Park. The policy is the right one given all the financial constraints we are working under, but the rigidity is doing us.

We need to sign a few old heads and break the wage barrier, that is what is holding us back imo.

We are screaming out for leadership on the park, we have none, off the park is another matter,on the park is where we need to focus, sort that and we are a tenth of the way there, sort the referees, we are all the way there.

    Serial embarrassing European performances.

Players publicly expressing their unhappiness with coach`s decisions.

Apparently lower crowd numbers……related to team performance?……………the responsibility of the coach.

C.Q.N. angst. We KNOW there is a problem. We only disagree about the cause.

And all this during a period of reduced competition from Rangers,Hibs and Hearts (last season).

  23. Stars

No I can’t, apart from the Griff who has screwed the head.

I have read much about players who have regressed, is that the fault of the coaches ?

Are the coaches to blame for players being pish, maybes they are, but I would find that hard to believe, players are fickle things, having been one masel I can state that with a tad of knowledge.

I believe that there is a problem in the camp, no idea what it is but it’s as plain as the nose on your face there is one.

Why would a player not want to improve, it makes no sense that they wouldn’t, and I don’t accept the pish that the coach is holding them back, that is total bollix imo, any player worth his salt wants to play as well as he can and get a move to a bigger or better or a better paid club, to deny that is feckin stupid, so what is the problem ?

The standard of the officiating in scotland towards Celtic is a major problem imo, we have to play to a different set of rules to our oppos, and when you ahve players who are at our level, their heads will drop to beat the band, can you imagine Messi being the player he is if he played for us, I very much doubt it.

I have answered your question mi amigo, now answer mine, who would you choose given the restraints he will be under,

Certainly not when we have already past a point when bangers like Roy Keane can be offered the job and can knock you back.

  26. From what I’m watching most of our team play like the ball is a hot potato and can’t get rid of it quick enough.
