Bucking underperforming recruitment trend

629

Every year we hear that January is a difficult time to do transfer business. Clubs are reluctant to allow top performers to leave midseason, but we’ve had some creative January activity over the years. Objectives for this month are clear.

We need to better prepare for our Summer Cup Finals. Trying to build a defence, or strike force, while simultaneously qualify for the Champions League is, unsurprisingly, tricky. Summer transfer windows are really two periods, the last days of the month, after European qualification has been taken care of, and earlier in the window, when limited volumes of business will take place.

We’ve done some great business early in summer months, most notably Virgil van Dijk, but instances like this are rare.

The most interesting aspect of this window will be how Ronny Deila is backed. He’s 18 months in the job now, long enough to come to an assessment of the wider scouting infrastructure he inherited. We’ve been underperforming on recruitment since January 2012. Ronny needs to buck this trend, and Celtic need to give him the necessary lateral.

The ‘Ronny is a Diddy’ agenda is of course purile nonsense, and was launched in Scotland by the deeply hurting press on the days of his appointment, who also ridiculed and questioned his assistant John Collins.

European results have been magnified, and the sub conscious of some Celtic fans has been overly influcenced, along with those that always know better than Peter Lawell and the Celtic custodians.

CQN also has the resident Pep Guardiola’s, and Monday morning quarter back. The only people that matter are active Celtic Supporters trudging to Celtic Park in diminishing numbers, the vast majority of whom back the club, and back the manager warts n all, to the hilt.

Internet trumpets that log on, having no clue, who scored where, or when are inconsequential, and will remain so in the difficult years we face in the further financial decline.because of what the old Rangers did.

Why do we need a manager anyway? – Celtic have won the league before it starts, you know the type?

A different coach on the same budget would have brought Celtic, very similar results ( see Neil Lennon). I’d prefer a more defensive man, I’m not a fan of Ronny’s game system and never have been, it is exposed in Europe and can come a cropper in a one off type game.

Replacing Ronny Deila with Mr Nobody, who is not willing to Scotland even if he could, whilst Celtic are winning, is infantile anti Celtic internet hot air.

    Morning

do you not think Rd changing a few things could have produced better results in Europe.

I’m not a true faithful through and throughl fan.if the product on the park isn’t doing it for me.I like to point out.my concerns, I won’t sit back and say oh I can’t criticise Celtic, I’m not an “anybody” hater I can only speak for myself, but there has been times.when the gaping holes could have been plugged when in a leading position and may have resulted in a win.

As for who can we get in place of Rd if he goes, well they would need to be willing to work under the same set of rules.

Yes, I do, in respect of Europe, and even some SPL league games.

A more defensive coach would have seen the game against Malmo stitched up, and

they smelled blood when they scored to make it 3-2. The home tie for them was

easy, and 1-0 would have done.

It may not have happened to MON WGS or NFL

Neither am I a faithful through and through fan, and I find it increasing difficult to

drag myself along for the present match day, and when I said ‘diminishing

Thanks, I look at the teams whose managers have progressed in the time RONNY has been here,

I know it wouldn’t sit well with the majority of fans but for me Robbie Neilson has done a terrify job at hearts, Jim McEntire., John Hughes, Peter Houston and Allan Stubbs given the resources could do as well a job as Rd, without all the grandstanding “well. Be fitter, faster, flowing football Rd promised us

Its a pity the game had/is chasing good guys sway and Imo if Pl gets it wrong this time there could be a hellova lots more not going

Anyway. I hope I’m totally wrong (not for the first time) and Rd vwts it right and we give a good account of ourselves in the qualifiers

Thanks again for responding to me

Maybe see you at the corner sometime ;)

  8. It’s not Ronny’s naive and impractical approach that will have me asking questions over my contined financial cintribution to Celtic FC, it will be the resounding silence from the lofty heights of the boardroom that will instigate my parsimony (should that be the case).

I think think Ronny’s team would have been much further ahead if there was an officiating level playing field. Barcelona, or Bayern Munich would be half as effective in their performances if they were playing in the SFA’s brainchild. Even bringing in a few hard men from the Spanish, or Italian leagues would just see them sent off- repeatedly.

It’s a bit of both for me on the ref situation, (I’ve never blamed the refs or mentioned them in any post)

If we played better and took our chances there’s a fair chance they (refs)wouldnt have as much influence on the result

cheating I don’t know about that, incompetent definitely.

    How do we combat that??

Score early and add a few

  11. When you embrace downsizing from a position of strength as an astute strategy, when you ambition mediocrity as a single point above your nearest rival at seasons end as an acceptable benchmark of domestic success and proof positive of fiscal propriety, when you advocate vice such as is ‘moneyball’ as solid business acumen, when you aspire to defend the choreographed devaluation of our clubs ethos and global reputation as a commercial virtue worthy of applause and continuity, when you silence turning lose the dogs of war on your own siblings for a worthless purse of rancid peace, when you glory dross as art, when your brother barbs you viciously for caring, when you lump all of the above into the one basket and live the dream a nightmare born… do not reach out to despair as a friend when the light shines down on you. Even then, on your very own personal road to Damascus, it is not yet too late to get down on your bended knees and pray your own good god that the road that now we follow – not necessarily ‘shoulder to shoulder, nor even hand in hand’ – is not a torturous path, liberally littered with Sisyphean unfaithfulness’s, sapping the last of hopes hope from the precious marrow of your soul. When you have endured beyond the joyless limits that were blessed you at birth… don’t give up.

When others tell you not to dream your own dream but to live their nightmare instead… just say I can’t do that, I have a voice hoarse with screaming and a heart bruised and torn but I care. I won’t be silent, I care. I care to see with my own eyes and chose the path I chose to follow. Does such make me/you a rebel or a traitor to the cause, and to which cause, the one with wings or the one under the millstone?

Or, in other words… is it yet too late for a wee U-turn? Just a wee one.

  13. There are those who say that….”Ronny must stay.”

    I agree with them.

    Ronny is not the problem.

You, the Celtic paying customer is the problem.

The custodians serve up p#sh…an you buy it.

    What can change this ?

Well, I think that the solution to the Celtic dilemma is or, rather…has a painful journey to navigate before a solution to the plastic Celtic PLC created by McCann with all your money, is found.

The huns will be back next season…they will mibbery their way to the title as, plastic Celtic watches on from the hard-shoulder but…the custodians won’t be taken aback as…this was all part of the plan….imho.

I will forever be convinced that….Celtic struck a deal with the huns establishment that…Rangers would be out of the SPL for three years but, Sleekit made sure it was 4. During the 3 / 4 years out of the top flight….Rangers would write-off a ‘possible’ CL-money-pot of what ?…..£45 million ?…Remember. Celtic will always make more from the CL than the huns coz of the size of CP. So, write off a ‘possible’ £45 million or, stay in the top flight and, ‘have’ to pay back the £140 million that they stole and, ‘possibly’ have the cheated titles stripped as well. As it turned out…Celtic…so far…have blown £60 million in CL-money-pots and, Celtic Park is now less than half-empty and, those who do be bothered to turn up…sit there…playing with their phones.

Some folk will say that folk like me are, no more than keyboard clatterers or, other stuff but, that is missing the point…maybe deceitfully ?

Ye see…there is a choice….available to all Celtic supporters.

    1. Pay yer money…support the team but….at the same time…be taken-in by the custodians who should be emptied….imho.

    2. Keep yer money in yer pocket and, refuse to be suckered by the compliant-participants of the biggest sporting scam this country will probably ever see.

Can I prove the custodians compliance ? No.

Can anybody on here, dis-prove the custodians compliance ? Hopefully.

As it stands just now….I’m not a betting man but..even if I was….I wouldn’t put a penny on the Celtic to beat anyone.

    …..oot……

  14. Random thoughts on the Ronny debates, plural.

IMO any comments regarding what the intentions of Peter Lawwell et al regarding Ronny’s employment status have little basis in fact and are therefore just keyboard gum bumping.

The reason being that I don’t believe that anyone on this forum has any inside track as to what is on big Peter’s mind. Anyone that were Peter’s confidant would not be posting his thoughts on this blog. Sorry Paul67.

However I do share the belief that it is appropriate for people to debate all manner of things Celtic on a Celtic blog. .Just don’t be attributing your thoughts to the mind of the CEO.

The second debate surrounds the form and formation of our playing staff and Ronny’s abilities in producing a successful Celtic team that we appreciate watching from the stands. Again there are many ways of considering this. On Saturday, I was less than pleased with various aspects of our play, both individually and as a team, but I was utterly euphoric when Griff struck to give us all three points, victory and fair wee lead in the title race. My demeanour as I walked past the Emirates to the ECmobile post match was greatly enhanced.

I go to watch Celtic and I love it when we win.

The third debate however concerns Ronny’s tactics and his ability to provide a format from which our playing eleven can produce beautiful, attractive, attacking, successful football, sweeping all before us.

Not much of a remit really, eh Ronny?

The moaning mini Mourinhos amongst us have had enough at want “Ronny out”, (some even before a ball was kicked). The grumpy Guardiolas want two up front and the aspiring Ancelottis demand abreturn to the hedonistic Henrik days when we regularly put five past anyone who faced us in Paradise. Oh if it were so simple.

My brief thoughts on the matter are that no matter what the system, ( and 4231 is the preferred modern way), it will, can, only work if the players have the football ability and brain; the game nous, the footballing intelligence to adapt to the evolving match conditions, i.e. Have a game plan and structure but be willing and able to adapt to what is actually happening on the pitch now.

We don’t have those players! Yet?

Let me give a simple example

Our starting set up is 4231, both full backs push up wide, leaving space behind them, to be covered by centre backs , who are then 40 yards apart, leaving a central gap for any willing opposing runner to enter, chasing a speculative punt. It is always the same no matter who we play.

On Saturday Thistle played one up front v our two centre backs, not much of a problem. Against Motherwell McGhee played two, Moult and Skippy v our two backed up by the whippit, Johnson?, making 3v2 in their favour with our other defenders retreating desparately to recover defensive positions. Motherwell could have scored 4 maybe 5 goals. Why ? Why can we rarely adjust to deal with the opposition’s tactics?

I believe our players are too rigid and therefore predictable. They have a vision of a game but no actual real game vision.

At all times our player in possession should have at least two options of who to pass to.

At all times we should have midfield fulcrum, all decent sides have, Alonso, Busquets, Lasley?

At all times the players, not in possession should be moving, creating angles to receive a pass.

We don’t. We stick to the proscribed system, our front 6 do not rotate, do not udjust angles, make short movement to create spaces. How often do we, e.g. See a line of 4,5,6 across the 18 yard line, waiting for a speculative cross into crowded area, dictated by our opponent’s rope a dope, two banks of four tactics?

We go through pre match drills, we do not react to actual real time situations. We lack the player skill and confidence to make things happen by assessing and adapting quickly to actual game play.

We have all played against the static centre forward, they guy centre halfs love to mark. Oh look there he is, right here, in front of me. We hate that guy that moves off the ball. Cifti v Griff anyone.

Celtic are like the static centre forward. Predictable, easy to play.

So, change back four starting position, let them develop an understanding in defence before setting off in attack; designate one holding fulcrum midfielder; encourage off the ball movement and creativity; free the players to think and use their abilities.

Here’s to the new year and hopefully a treble.

  17. Macjay,

    To sum up.

Defence needs time to settle to a defensive unit.

Let the back five become comfortable playing with each other. Craig needs to trust Boyata and Jozo, who need to support each other and form a decent partnership, not constantly be pulled out of position covering areas exposed due to absentee attacking wing backs.

Broonie crucial, need all midfield to realise the necessity to adapt but always have a pivot/ fulcrum and be comfortable to be that when required. We do need to replace big Vic.

If we are to play a pressing game then we all need to do it, and know when to press. Too many, Commons, Rogic, Forrest willing to allow others to do it. If they three play we are not pressing.

Griff, Johansen, Bitton, Armstrong, Broonie, McGregor and GMS, (when he remembers), are more effective in a pressing role.

    Adapt.

We cannot play every game the same.

I also feel it is sad how some Celtic Supporters have been influenced by the latest media onslaught (agenda) on our latest manager, players and Club…. They tried to discredit Jock Stein but failed miserably, and they have been successful in discrediting a number of our managers since then ….Neil is the best example…..he would never have left Celtic if he had not been subjected to the ‘he brings it on himself’ meeja culture ……. it’s a great pity that the ‘agenda’ meets less resistance from our support than it did when I was young …..sad indeed

I’m also starting to wonder if our Board are looking after the best interests of Our Club ….it’s one thing staying silent while oldco destroyed themselves, and while sevco go down the same road, but it is not acceptable to allow the media to continually, for example, to completely misquote our players / managers etc when they make a statement. It’s all part of the anti-all-things Celtic agenda, and our Board need to start challenging the media….

As nothing said on a message board will have any affect on the performance of the players, what does it matter?

Maybe the old….horses for courses approach would be the simple and yet, effective formula for the players at Celtic’s disposal ?

I know that this suggestion disny go down too well in these parts but….I think that, Big Mark McGhee would turn Celtic FC, upside down if…he was in charge of the footballing dept at Celtic Park.

But, having Big McGhee in charge of Celtic would mean that…PL & JP would be on the outside…looking in.

That would be a no – no then.

But, anyone who thinks that Celtic will posper whilst being run by a clique….is in for a shock when, the rioting-piss-on-everybody-huns come back.

Where as….Big McGhee would have the club tuned-in to what to expect when the evil ones return and, most important of all…how to defeat it.

Celtic don’t need to buy more players….the ones already there would, win the treble and…qualify for the CL-group stages next season if….Big McGhee was in charge and….being selfish….I think Big McGhee would take, John Collins under his wing and, mould him into Big McGhee’s replacement….imho.

Nearly 2 years down the road and we’re talking about how Ronny might get it right ?….He wont!

But, he is in place because of his compliance with the PL & JP thingy that, is anchoring Celtic FC instead of, taking the high seas by the storm that Big McGhee would.

Ye see….I think that Big McGhee should have got the Celtic gig after WGS…but, BTM got it.

Big McGhee wouldn’t have taken all the hun cheating on the chin….he’d have went in for the kill and, made sure that….the huns didny get stealing 3 years CL-money whilst, innocent-well-meaning football supporters paid to watch a rigged-game and…worst of all….Celtic’s board, looked the other way….if that isny grounds for wholesale sackings then…Celtic Park really is a fools paradise.

Many good points and pretty close to the way I see things.

I have no problem with the 4-2-3-1 system per se. However, like any formation, it is only as effective as the players playing it. My opinion is that often the way that we’ve been playing it is too demanding on the players at our disposal.

One up front is fine so long as those behind, particularly the ‘3” get up in support.

On Saturday we had a good passage of passing play and the ball was worked to Lustig who was in an advanced position to the right of the Thistle penalty box. He created a yard of space and crossed into the area. We had one player, Ciftci, in there, against 5 Thistle defenders.

Inevitably, Thistle one the ball and immediately tried to play the ball into our right back area which had been vacated by Lustig.

If we’re going to continue playing this system with the two full backs often in very advanced positions, we need a sitting midfielder who spends his entire time just forward of our two centre backs.

Oh and we need to play players in their most effective positions.

  25. Eurochamps67

Great post this morning, I might be in the minority but I think DB and JS have the makings of a good partnership as one who watches from afar I appreciate your hands on summary of the team.

My wee heart sinks every time I see the line up and both KC and JF are playing, individually decent players but as team players I don’t think we can afford both of them at the same time, it leaves us very light defensively in midfield. I have to admit I hadn’t noticed Tom Rogic’s lack of pressing just that the game seems to pass him by quite often and agin him and KC at the same time seems to annul the contribution of the no.10 role.

We definitely miss a midfield anchor and that would be my priority in the window of opportunity:))
