Bucking underperforming recruitment trend

629

Every year we hear that January is a difficult time to do transfer business. Clubs are reluctant to allow top performers to leave midseason, but we’ve had some creative January activity over the years. Objectives for this month are clear.

We need to better prepare for our Summer Cup Finals. Trying to build a defence, or strike force, while simultaneously qualify for the Champions League is, unsurprisingly, tricky. Summer transfer windows are really two periods, the last days of the month, after European qualification has been taken care of, and earlier in the window, when limited volumes of business will take place.

We’ve done some great business early in summer months, most notably Virgil van Dijk, but instances like this are rare.

The most interesting aspect of this window will be how Ronny Deila is backed. He’s 18 months in the job now, long enough to come to an assessment of the wider scouting infrastructure he inherited. We’ve been underperforming on recruitment since January 2012. Ronny needs to buck this trend, and Celtic need to give him the necessary lateral.

  1. Since Saturday there has been quite a bit of comment on the MIB’s attempts to thwart Celtic.

I have found myself wondering why, if he was so determined to deny us a victory, with only minutes to go, he did not do a Collum or McLuskey and see some mysterious offence on Celtic’s part.

I assume I am one of the “some” number you speak of?

Given my previous post stated the opposite of each of your points re “some”.

Fortunately I have always judged based on my own experience and not that of others.

The experience of going to watch Celtic play is poor. The experience of watching a manager run out of ideas, consistently play players out of their best and most effective positions, take off the best performers in a failed attempt to change things are all things I have made jusgement on with the benefit of sight. Not via radio as I rarely listen, TV sports as I don’t watch (mainly because programming is totally crap) and if I do watch it’s Celtic TV generally and NOT via sports PR in newspapers.

So my judgement and views are not tainted by the media. Thankfully neither are they tainted by green specs.

My condolences on the loss of your Dad. Time is the great healer and you will get the strength to cope. It is nice that there was love and respect there, as it isn’t always the case. I was vexed when I lost my own father 22 years ago, but his last word was “paradise”, nothing to do with football, and I got great comfort from this. My own grandson, Michael, 5, paid his first visit to Celtic Park on Saturday and had a memorable day. I had to make do with updates from here, radio and Shuggy Jr and was delighted with the 3 points.

So would that render the current shareholders’ investments totally worthless and is the likely destination back to SDM or BDO or neither. Tangled.

Court cases about Glasgow Rangers and the Rangers always provide a bit of fun initialy as you look at the charges and say to yourself this is bound to blow a hole below the waterline and sink the good ship the Rangers.Of course after a week or two you see the court cases are not going the way you expected and you see the establishment pulling a rabbit out of a hat and the prosecution getting there gunards handed to them on a plate and the charges being laughed out of court. So Bhoys dont build your hopes up to high and keep your powder dry and hope just hope this time that they may get there just desserts. Do you ever wish that you were better informed?

Anyone who is relying on the stenographers to educate them on matters Sevco could be forgiven that the £5m owing to Sports Direct has already been paid.

I’m sorry, but I have to be a contrarian on this.

My information is that the £5m will not be accepted with the conditions attached to it by the New Regime.

The response from the Sports Direct people was, well, direct.

The monies should be paid back in full within the terms that it was originally lent a year ago.

Consequently, the New Regime at Sevco can forget their list of demands.

I am told that General Ashley is not minded to drop any ongoing litigation.

Moreover, I understand that ‘in full’ means that the principal of £5m PLUS penalties is now considered to be owed.

There, you’re now better informed than you were before you read this.

Now, if you don’t mind I have to go back into Act Two of ‘Rebellion’.

Saturday was a new low point for me and I’m seriously thinking of chucking it. Some of the abuse directed at the players & manager before a ball was even kicked and it got worse as the game went on. The stuff that was being shouted at Ciftci, RD etc was way over the top and I’ll not be back if that’s the way we’re going. I can’t sit and listen to that every week, I’m going to put Saturday’s down to the time of the year and too much drink. The only upside was when the camera phones came out and the crowd in JS lower started to get behind the team. It shut the roasters up for a bit, worst I have ever encountered at a home game for a long time…

  27. Happy New Year to all CQNers and Celtic supporters. I have been fairly busy the last few months and haven’t been able to lurk much never mind post anything.

I have a new job, new business venture and a lot less spare time on my hands. There have been a lot of people who supported me via this site the last few years and I won’t embarrass them by naming them but you know who you are and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I should be in a position soon enough to meet most if not all of you sometime soon.

It’s been an up and down period for the Celts has it not? Isn’t it always? We are not fully firing I think that is fairly clear. What is even more clear is that the auld media divide and conquer strategy is in full flow. A mate of mine who goes on the Leith CSC sent me a copy of the communication between a sky reporter and their Facebook page. Shameful attempts to get words from fans regarding our manager and no doubt twist them to their own agenda. Well dealt with by the Facebook user and an example to all when dealing with the media. Give them nothing!

Regardless of your thoughts on the manager keep them in house! Discuss with your mates, family in the pub or wherever but putting it in print as a quote to the media is playing into their hands. Phoning hotlines or phone ins isn’t much better. Whether Ronny is the right man or not is still a question some people are debating in their own mind but that will be sorted in due course via his team’s performances and results. In the meantime the team need backing. It’s a sticky period. All teams have them. We haven’t won many matches recently but the bottom line is that if Ronny fails to win the treble this season his days are numbered as Celtic manager. Ronny will already know that and so will the board. It doesn’t need to be said 1 million times in every newspaper and news report.

The team itself don’t seem to be clicking at the minute. The way I see it is that there are a lot of reasons for this. The board will take the usual flak but in all honesty players are signed on the promise that if there is a decent offer on the table they can go. Big Virgil was desperate to get away. He took the huff against Dundee at Dens last season and failed to play after wanting away to some no mark EPL side. Ironically our best player this season had to get himself off the bench and save our bacon that day from a loss. Virgil was brought back on side and eventually played out the season and also the qualifiers this season. Therein lies the first problem this season. Virgil was never staying on at Paradise this season. He should have been emptied ASAP after last season ended and our new defence bought and gelling before the qualifiers. We got that all wrong and had to sell arguably our best player and replace him mid season. Poor old Efe the whipping Bhoy was in, out, in, out and played in a variety of RB and CH and took the heat of a whole host of under performers by taking the flak. Craig Gordon has cost us more goals this season in Europe than Efe ever has. Craig Gordon has cost us more goals in Europe in the last 2 seasons than Efe has in his whole Celtic career. Craig Gordon doesn’t get the flak. I’m not one for handing out flak myself. Not sure it helps anyone I just wish people would back all players equally in the Hoops.

Griffiths is proving the old adage that goal scorers can score anywhere. This lad feared me when he played for Hibernian. He can score from anywhere within 35 yards from goal. He was a fantastic header of a ball at Livingston and Dundee. He has screwed the nut off the pitch which is a bonus and he is the talisman for this current Celtic team and I am delighted he has signed a new contract. I had a discussion with an EPL obsessed colleague a few weeks ago raving about Vardy down south. I have watched the boy and he is a very good player and goal scorer but I wouldn’t swap him for Griffiths. In my opinion Griffiths is not only a better athlete he is a better all round player and goal scorer and is better in the air and has more pace than the boy at Leicester. Our major problem is supply. Vardy is being supplied by Mahrez who came from Le Havre reserves for a small fee. He is a ball player. A number 10. A flair player. He makes them tick. He plays a lovely defensive splitting pass. The Leicester defence is ordinary. They are organised and have the experienced Huth who just defends. There is nothing complicated about Leicester. They lose goals, they work hard, they have a goal scorer, a number 10 and also an organised defence and a work ethic that is getting them results.

In Leicester City I see what Ronny sees. This is how he wants us to play.

Why is it not working? We play different teams to Leicester. Worse quality? No doubt. Defensive? No doubt. 10 men behind the ball? Most times the answer is yes. I don’t buy that it is harder to break down. You adjust to make it happen. We lack a number 10. Could Scott Allan be that man? I think he might be. Kris Commons is a number 10? Is he? I’m not convinced. Kris is number 1 a goal scorer. He is looking to score not pass. He likes to play behind a striker that will create space for him to shoot and score. He is not the archetypical number 10 who dictates play and moves the ball quickly and then releases that killer pass behind a full back or between two centre backs. Find that player and Griffiths will have you forgetting who Gary Hooper ever was with the goals he will score for Celtic.

2 up front. The alternative is to go with 2 strikers. The big man, wee man set up or the grafter and goal scorer. There are merits in the two up front. I like it. Could Commons play up with Griff? I think so. Play Allan number 10. For me Rogic and Bitton are too similar in style and pace. Playing both is slowing your midfield far too much. We must retain possession of the ball but we must also move it quickly to try and take any advantage when a team do not have 10 men behind the ball. We need genuine pace and delivery on the wings. Can Commons play there? Yes. I am a big fan of Forrest. I think the Bhoy can be a huge player for us and he is a player that teams fear when he is able to run at them. We need another winger to support him on the other side. Commons could be that man. No doubt slower than James but his delivery is very good. Commons is a slight problem. He doesn’t appear to want to play on the wing. Does he want to play up front? Not sure. He seems to play where he wants and that is in a floating role. I’m not quoting Kojo but you know what I am getting at. I would like to see Kris deployed wide and James on the other side with Allan in the number 10 role and Griff up top.

Hold onto your hats but while I am juggling players around I would like to see Efe play in his natural position this weekend beside Bitton in the holding role in midfield. We lack muscle in their. We lack a tackler. Efe is a holding midfielder. Let’s see what he can do there. He has been slated everywhere else so give the Bhoy another chance in the midfield and if it doesn’t work we can get rid. He played his first game there v Raith Rovers and looked a player. Give the Bhoy a chance. He can protect the defence and also add much needed strength in an area we lack it.

We have the best squad in Scotland of that there is no doubt but it’s not clicking. Maybe shuffling the pack around will help. Nesbitt must also be coming into the reckoning. Certainly against Stranraer. Give the Bhoy a run out soon.

Continuing on with the current set up will create the same performances. If the manager is a man who believes in youth and progression of players then shuffle the pack and play some of the players outside looking in and let the other players who are left out for under performing fight their way back in because sticking with what we have will probably result in similar performances. Over to you Ronny. Weild the axe and trust the young Bhoys.
