Derision, hiding, wanting to win the league?

935

I don’t know is that was the worst home performance I’ve seen, but it was up there. We look like a broken team. Dundee were comfortable throughout, limited Celtic to one genuine chance in the game (in the 76th minute), and caused havoc during their regular attacks on Craig Gordon’s goals. Their best chance came from a corner kick (what else), which was sent over by a player who stopped to head the ball from 5 yards.

Charlie Mulgrew is not the most gifted player, he’s not a central midfielder and he’s not game-fit yet, but despite putting in an indifferent shift last night, he never hid.  The juxtaposition between him and others was stark.  We need players with attitude – the captain back on form, Kris Commons fully fit and starting, and others taking their lead.

Confidence is on the floor. Mistakes, backwards passing and long balls forward were all subject to derision, but I think last night was the first time I’ve heard a Celtic substitute being booed onto the field.  All because he doesn’t want to renew a contract for his position as occasionally-used squad player.  The seriousness of the situation is clearly lost on those who want to boo a player taking the field instead of encouraging the guy to help us win a game.  The whole experience got me thinking, how many of us actually want to win this league?

You better believe they want to win it at Pittodrie.  They have focus, form, packed stands and patience.  They also enjoy the ‘Leicester City effect’ – everyone not competing directly with them wants them to win.  The rest of Scottish football is desperate for us to tear ourselves apart right now.  We need to circle the wagons, live up to the reputation we like to think we have, and play our role in delivering this title.

You want 10-in-a-row?  Bring me your complaints in May, but for now get your shoulder to the wheel.  This is not our first performance crisis and it won’t be our last, as a collective, we need to be smart in dealing with these situations.

Everyone at Celtic Park (and beyond) knows this is not good enough, and there’s going to need to be big changes in the summer, but we need to get our act together and put the inquest on hold until the end of the season.

  1. The most common tenure for a CEO in medium to large businesses is 5 years. Beyond that term, any impact you make can be diluted by economic or industry cycles; any shorter and you can be accused of making changes for a quick buck and didn’t stay on long enough to prove any benefits.

PL has been here 13 years so whatever opinion you have on his success or lack of, he certainly is accountable for it.

i desperately wanted a good win last night and now I desperately want one on Sunday. I won’t watch it on Sunday as my daughter is doing a reading at midday Mass and she never puts in less than 100%! I will tape it and will pray all through the game.

We need 2 good wins in a row to shake ourselves out of this . EK, RC, ICT were not good wins.

I too seek comfort in the stats but the stats don’t tell you that there is a malaise setting in at the most crucial part of the season.

I would compare our general performances to that of Black Sunday. I would like to think anyone watching that could see the danger in how the game went that day and how events led to us losing. From memory, only Stan Petrov smelled the danger that day and urged his team mates on. No one in this current team looks to be sending a signal to his team mates that their behaviours wil lose us points. It’s a malaise that we won’t get out of unless a spark comes from the players.

The fans can contribute yes but the signs have been lit up in neon since September 2014 that the fans are scunnered. What is the point in cheerleading a failed project to give them more oxygen to continue on the wrong road.

  7. What kind of person takes the time and trouble to write a post glorying in the challenges our club and manager are facing just now , at the same time labelling fans as “idiots ” for supporting.

Some of the posts on here are embarassing. All about the poster and their sense of ” I told you so” . More interested in screaming they were right than anything else. It’s all about them and their entitlement. Their LOOK AT ME …..LISTEN TO ME ……attitude is cringeworthy. “IF YOU HAD ONLY LISTENED TO ME WE’D STILL BE IN THE CL AND ROMPING THE LEAGUE” mantra is pathetic. Screaming for change without offering a realistic solution to who is going to manage the club for the last 3 months of the season. Demanding we sack Ronny and bring in someone like Moyes is as likely to happen as dropping Bitton and bringing back Wanyama.

Ronny out…..maybe , but who is going to come in now with everything to lose and little credit to be gained for winning. Lenny might , but precious few of talent and ability would take the job now. Entirely different matter in June

Maybe Ronny’s time is coming to an end, maybe change is needed. Ronny though has acted with way more class than some of tne posters to this site. It’s no crime to have failed as Celtic manager. The crime would have been to be Celtic manager and act like a classless moron.

I agree with Paul’s underlying point that we will need our experienced players to get through this .

Paul didn’t blame fans for the teams recent performances. The “I know better than you ” lobby though are in full self righteous vent mode. For them it’s less about Celtic and more about them.

Would we be in a better position if Neil Lennon had bought into the plan and stayed as manager, with Ronny under him, developing young players for the squad.

*and that’s the crux of the matter, he left us in a lurch similar to when Gerard Houlier chose Liverpool, he went tae uni there so had a sentimental attachment, instead of us though he did say our offer was tempting. We did get lucky with the oul Dr.

Unfortunately, Neil didn’t exactly improve his own position, by being idle for months, then taking up a job that nobody wanted.

*after beating Barca IMHO he started to believe his own press and thought he would have the pick of the jobs down south. Got too big for his boots is a term that comes to mind.

When Tommy Burns was relieved of the managerial duties he was offered the head of development role, but probably pride got in the way and he turned it down. Thankfully for us he took the job a few years later. Could be the position that Ronny will be offered instead of the sugar lump, as we all know Celtic don’t fire managers. Ooops that’s no us but a club that disnae exist now.

Though there is a pattern of 0-0 draws

    1) Started the season winning 5 of the first 6 games (0-0 draw at Killie the exception.)

    2) Then lost at Pittodrie.

    3) We then won 8 of the next 10 (Two more 0-0 draws)

    4) Loss to Motherwell at home

    5) Win 4 of the next 5 (2-2 draw vs Hearts)

    6) Lose at Pittodrie

I don’t accept that comparison. At that stage MON was effectively working part-time (not questioning the reason why) and as a result he kept with a squad that were too old, overpaid and looked disinterested. The only reason we got to that stage was we managed to convince Bellamy to come for six months and he dragged us back in it.

This is a younger squad who are more inconsistent and have higher expectations placed on them. The lack of faith shown to a coach and squad who just won a title by 17 points is alarming. Especially when they are 4 points clear.

What’s our current direction of travel?

63 points from 28 matches suggests us finishing with 85 points.

While 8 points from 15 in our 5 most recent matches suggests 79 points. I’d say that represents the spread.

Aberdeen are averaging 2.1 points per game over the season, a season which is curiously defined by long periods of consistency interrupted by shorter periods of inconsistency. It would be ‘on trend’ were they to win 8 and lose 2 of their remaining 10 matches, giving a points total of 83.

Irrespective of the level of confidence an individual has over the outcome, it’s clear that Aberdeen’s sense that the title is in play for them is very much valid.

Celtic supporters who are becoming anxious over how the league will play out not acting from some inexplicable sense of doom.

For the record, I think we’ll win the league this season, but I must confess that it would no longer be a surprise if we didn’t. Aberdeen at (currently) 9/1 to win it defies the available evidence.

  21. Let’s no fool ourselves, there are a number of contributors here that are wallowing in their own smugness over events in the last few weeks.

    Paul

Normally agree with just about everything you blog but on this occasion I have to take the opposite view. I don’t have any knowledge or insight into what’s going on behind the scenes at Celtic Park or in the dressing room. All is clearly not well. Last night didn’t just suddenly happen. It has been building up for a number of weeks. We beat Hamilton 8-1 and then lost the next two games (different tournaments) to Ross County and Aberdeen. There was a huge outcry on here about it and a lot of detrimental comment about Ronny. Along with some others I appealed for calm, pointed out that Celtic had been unlucky losing Efe against Ross County early on and losing an unlucky, if somewhat spectacular Jonny Hayes goal totally against the run of play at Pittodrie. Up to that point Aberdeen had looked terrified. I said that the time to assess the manager’s situation at the end of the season. I really felt confident that it was two games we needed to get out of our system and that Ronny would steady the ship and we would soon be back on track to win the title by at least 10 points.

Why has my opinion changed? We played Ross County in the league at Celtic Park. The first half was dire and we were totally outplayed by a well organised team. Individual brilliance and goals from Griffiths won us the game but the score line flattered us. Against ICT it was the same story. Terrible first half. Outplayed by the opposition who were again well organised and tried to play football. Both of these opponents had a bit of “dig” which I haven’t seen in a Celtic team since Paul Hartley and Barry Robson left. So I thought, “It’s not pretty to watch but we’re back to winning ways as I expected.” Then we had Hamilton Accies on Friday night and Dundee last night. Two car crash performances. Four points conceded out of a possible six. I now feel that it’s not going to get any better. Like everyone else I have looked closely at the players and I can’t see who is going to step up to the plate, take this squad by the scruff of the neck and get them to perform like the talented players we know that many of them are.

It gives me no pleasure to say it but Ronny is not learning or developing as a manager. His faults and errors since his appointment have been catalogued on here so I won’t bore you by revisiting all of them but here are some of the recent ones:

Friday v Hamilton – Scott Allan is played but on wide left. Why? No creativity through the middle so Ronny sticks his go to player for forward passing where he can least be effective.

Same game – agreeing with the referee’s decision over the Boyata red card when he had only seen it once and then criticising his player publicly on television. Maybe that is the reason why the other players don’t appear to be playing for him. Are they thinking, “If I make a mistake here is he going to criticise me in an interview on the telly?”

Last night v. Dundee – He brought on James Forrest as a sub after the player has indicated that he wants to leave. If you don’t sign on then you should be sitting in the stand not coming on to the field of play. This was the consensus from everyone around me last night.

There is a long way to go until the end of the season. Ten games left and I think if we do not take radical surgery to the situation then we might go into free fall. It’s not as if there are only 4 or 5 games left and not enough time for a new manager to make an impact and save the day. Our next league game is in 9 days time. Put a new manager in as soon as possible so that he can prepare for that game against Thistle and Kilmarnock a week later. Win both games and we are back on our way to the title with the ship steadied. The Cup game with Morton is of lesser importance and will have to take care of itself.

The advantage of a new manager just now is that it will tell him a lot about his players befor the Champions League qualifiers. He can get the league won and then decide what changes he needs to make to the squad, the system and generally give him time to plan for the CL.

All the above is only my opinion. Sorry for the length of it.

    Yes or no answer.

Do you believe that Celtic fans are currently being short changed?

  29. The bottom line is that there are a number of kids taking to the pitch right now that could do with our support, not derision.

Nothing good ever became of wholesale abuse, and it only serves to add fuel to the tentativeness already in place. A downward spiral indeed.

It’s too early for a seasonal autopsy, and too much is still at stake.

I think that is what Paul is attempting to get across.

  30. Go tell the Spartim on

    Quonno,

Think we’re being short changed in every department

    Board

    Management

    Scouting

    Charlatans masquerading as players

So I’ll throw it back at you do you think the “fans” are short changing the team

As I’ve said the bedwetters want all the accolades but won’t do any of the work

Does that answer your leading question?

  31. At this juncture, to do and say nothing is not an option – in this I think we can all agree.

We cannot, as some suggest, clear out the whole executive and boardroom – fantasy- please don’t insult all our intelligence and say, why not?

    So what can we do?:

    1) Sack Ronny and put Collins in charge.

    2) Sack the whole managerial team and bring in an interim manager.

    3) Discipline and drop certain players if they are causing unrest.

    4) Do nothing and hope things get better.

In my opinion Nos 1 & 4 can not be considered – that leaves Nos 2 & 3.

    2)

Who would we bring in on an interim basis – who is available and acceptable?

Top of the list is obviously Gordon Strachan – sorry to mention it, but similar to the Paul Le Guen situation, at a strife-stricken Ibrox. What we should also remember here is that it was a rogue player, Barry Ferguson, who was the catalyst for change – do we have a ‘Barry’, or, two, in our squad?

Rodgers and/or Moyes would not take an interim appointment, in fact coming to Scotland would be a no no to both.

Lambert and Lennon fall into the same category for different reasons.

It’s hard to think who is left, unless there is a Wim Jansen-type out there on the continent – answers on a ‘special delivery’ postcard.

If Ronny does go, I think we can be certain that another like him will not fill his boots.

    4)

Can we really afford to do nothing and ‘circle the wagons’ in the hope that we can ‘stumble over the line’?

Well it may be the only viablechoice we have.

If that is the case there must be a ‘clear the air’ statement from Peter Lawwell, Ronny and his assistants and ALL the players (via their spokesman), to the effect that we are not ‘broken’ and a line has been drawn under recent events – the fans disquiet must be addressed and assuaged.

But over the last 10 games we’re evenly matched. You could take any snapshot that you might argue one way or the other but over the season as a whole you’d still back us.

If last night does one thing I hope it removes this air of complacency that hangs over the place. It strikes me that RD still have to learn that every team raises their game when they come to CP, and he can’t prepare for it based on their league position (as he seems to).

I can’t fathom a reason for playing 3 players still coming back from injury other than to rest others and give them time in a game he thought might be straightforward. He should have learned by now that that’s not going to work at Celtic.
