Hayes, Koki Mizuno and the right-mid gap

1491

You and I have been doing this long enough to remember this place in meltdown at the prospect of Celtic signing a player from another SPL club. Domestically sourced talent was regarded as unimaginative, cheap, even. Contrast this with the utter joy when we signed Koki Mizuno, who was full-on exotic, but built for finer things then competitive football.

At 29, Aberdeen’s Irish international midfielder, Jonny Hayes is certainly unimaginative, and may be comparatively cheap, but he’s also a low-risk option for Celtic, who will know what they could get (and what they will not get) from the player.

With Patrick Roberts due to report to Manchester City on his return from holiday, Celtic are short of options for right-mid, with the first Champions League qualifier only five weeks away. The manager will view this gap in his squad as an unnecessary risk to next season’s objectives.

At best Hayes is a squad filler in a squad we are trying to trim in the quest for quality over quantity. He is, IMHO, another Cifti. I hope our collective ambitions are not going to be wagered, and out position of strength squandered, on squad filler caliber players getting free tickets to all our future matches. All they are doing is robbing a supporter of the brief.

Mind you, if the 29 yr old(wont mention his name:)) transforms himself like Super Galctico Stuart Armstrong, who in one season, has went from a kyle lafferty type to a genius of messiesque proportions, we will do ok.

    Still…what a transformation from Stuart Armstrong eh….Biblical:)

Don’t forget what age were Scott Brown and Stuart Armstrong when they signed for Celtic. I believe young Christie is a better player than Hayes, should we just pump Christie?

  10. VFR800 is now a Monster 821 on

I’m not sure about the Hayes signing; no doubt he is a decent player but not, IMHO, better than James Forrest.

Having said that, Rodgers has improved Forrest, Armstrong, Boyata and Simunovic beyond comparison. He has brought out the flair in Rogic and Sinclair and breathed new life into Brown and Lustig. Craig Gordon is now a much better keeper.

So I am assuming the Rodgers sees something in Hayes that he can work with (again) and improve significantly. That’s his job I suppose!

If he does come, I wish him all the best!

No complaints from me if we sign Hayes.he is an excellent player.was with ICT,and has vastly improved with the Dons.Just dont want a swap with Christie. He deserves another loan spell, hopefully with the Dons.He needs a season of competitive games, then we can see his improvement. If you are fast and tricky,as Hayes is,you can rip any opponent a new one.Dont care what level.

He is tough as old boots into the bargain, and can play right or left.Great tracking back to help defence.

    Totally Agree.

I remember when we signed Griff and there was misgivings in the ranks.

Why? If we can get a proven top SPL Performer in to strengthen the squad, for me it’s a no brainer…

We play the vast majority of our matches in the SPL, it’s our bread & butter and winning the league is essential.

What Jonny can does in the UCL will be a bonus… It’s his SPL experience that’s invaluable.

Was reading up on the boy Fischer this morning.Very similar to Scotty Sinclair.Burst onto the scene as a future superstar.Recieved a shocking injury, out for a year.On returning to fitness,Ajax had replaced him,and changed their style of play.Has lost his way since. They described him as ,”Not a winger, not a number 10,but a player who moves all over the attack, very difficult to pick up,quick, terrific dribbler, great finisher.

A STOR MHA CHROI on 2ND JUNE 2017 11:50 AM fair point , lobo was older again but he did have a well renowned European pedigree even if he stayed faithful to a club that didn’t meet his aspirations until he became a bhoy. Young Christie should get his chance to play in the hoops. Hayes will probably just be a squad player but could be what we need for a long domestic and European season. Hoping for Paddy to come home or some young new talent fir the first team but we do have a strong squad right now.

The main problem I had with Cifci-while agreeing he had been excellent the previous season-was that he had scored ONE top flight goal before that.

Another example of us throwing mud at the wall. All of our successes back then were defensive players. Moneyball didn’t seem to work for us with attackers.

Please don’t tell me Celtic are going to go all in on Jonny Hayes to realise CL qualification. Surely if ‘the manager’ views a gap in the squad he will fill it with a player befitting of implied ambition.

  29. Ah, I see the CQN panel of experts are judging Johnny Hayes by the popular ‘Leigh Griffiths Barometer’.

Previous deployment of this scale resulted in 40-goals-a-season, fans’ darling, Sparky being written off as being ‘not Celtic class’ and of questionable moral virtue.

How’s that one working out for us?

  30. A Stor Mha Chroi on

    TAURANGABHOY:

i think you’d agree that Lubo was a much better player than Jonny Hayes could ever dream of becoming and cost 1/4 of the purported Hayes transfer fee without the fee being weighted with Christie. I can’t see any value in Hayes, none at all. He would just be robbing away supporters of a ticket and being paid to do it too.

Bring back Ajer from Kilmarnock and give him a chance. What about Kouassi, is he an away ticket robber too. Give the bhoy a chance before we bring in more squad fillers. We don’t need squad fillers to win the Scottish league next year but we need quality to progress in Europe.

  31. A STOR MHA CHROI @ 12:05 PM,

    Well! True Enuff…

But for me Ciftci wasn’t a top SPL Performer.

The way I look at it, JH doesn’t replace PR or JF.

He may well of course replace GMS… which, before you point it out:) Proves SPL performers (like most Players) don’t come with guarantees.

Our record this Season should not blind us to the fact that on occasions we have seen below par performances due to fatigue and injuries.

On balance I believe we’ll see a good addition to the squad.
