Lessons for Celtic defence, great auction for Foundation

381

It was a hard shift for Gordon Strachan’s Scotland last night. Germany are on a different level, possibly from all other teams, at the moment, but Gordon’s been through similar tests as Celtic manager. What I liked about the display was that German were afforded few genuine chances, while the goals they scored, a deflection and two which hit the post before crossing the line, gave David Marshall no chance.

Scotland failed to collect a point as they found it impossible to concentrate at the level required for the entire 90 minutes. We’ve seen Celtic teams do this successfully in the past – and not just against Barcelona. We took Milan to a 0-0 after 90 minutes in the San Siro, while teams from Manchester and Munich, and lesser locations, chased the oxygen out of Celtic players’ lungs but could not find the space required to turn Celtic over.

During the previous two seasons Celtic recorded impressive domestic defensive records, but this was not due to imperious levels of concentration, we were simply better than the opposition by a sufficient margin. When that wasn’t the case, in Europe, we often didn’t display the levels of concentration which was on show, even from Scotland last night.

Great players can score wonder goals against you at any point, but don’t dive into tackles, watch what’s going on off the ball, make the right choices on how to press the ball, and even the greats will struggle to make an opening.

The biggest challenge we have ahead of the Europa League campaign is incorporating this season’s defensive arrivals into a coherent defensive strategy. It’s a concern that Craig Gordon looks like a better goalkeeper playing for Celtic in Europe than David Marshall did playing for Scotland against Germany. Marshall is a good enough keeper, but his defence didn’t expose him too often. Craig is called upon too often in Europe.

Im not joking about the porn industry. It’s always been at the forefront of video compression.

Its interesting what has happened in the Costa Del Sol down Malaga way.

Most pubs and ex pats watched Sky from a Sky satellite because its Footprint covered Southern Spain.

There were tales from 2006 that this would change and the satellite reorbited and it did about 2 years ago.

The IPTV guys did well selling streaming boxes which is what I was telling my mate who then had the Cunard Bar (now sold) he would have to go for.

They did in droves and I admired how the Spanish telephone system was able to cope using ADSL copper wire but I reckoned it would not be long until contention became an issue.

The telephone companies seem to be on the ball because fibre optic cabling was being installed in the block I rent in when I left and whilst there was the occasional buffering on the Android box the landlady had installed I’m looking forward to cable which is the only reason I stay with Virgin at home, when I go back.

  3. It’s dead easy to find out the difference between the live stream and the playback and I’ll do it for the next game.

Check my downloaded status after the live stream then do the same after the play back it will tell me how much I have downloaded, now I just need to remember to do that :)

Maybe somebody will believe me if they are the same.

  4. weeminger on 8th September 2015 9:58 pm There also isn’t an internet based service in history that was built to seamlessly meet the known maximum demand.

    ======================

That ties in with the bullshit I was told. The ISPS might offer say 20Meg connections but bank on only half the subscribers being on line at the same time to deliver. When all subscribers are on the ISP cuts the share that 10 were getting by half to serve the 20.

  5. The Fran and Anna lookalikes and apparently, so we are told, a majority of the electorate, shout “Scotland – wha’s like us” – thank **** say all the countries in the developed world.

A country that now fails in all aspects of service delivery to their people – Health, Police,Education,Law, Local Authorities – claims fame only in supplying whisky, which employs but a handful of people and in tourism, which attracts interest in the countryside – thank God it is a natural phenomenon, or we’d ruin that too.

In all sports we are a’ laughing stock’, save for Murray, who owes his prowess to the UK coaching system.

And yet as we ‘circle the drain’, owing our standard of living only to being part of the UK – some fools want to ‘cut off their noses to spite their faces’ and separate from the UK, although when the economic facts of life become more apparent (£10 billion deficit), some of the zealots have been ‘holding their tongues’ recently.

Why would they want absolute power when they can carry on talking crap and blame all their incompetence and maladministration on Westminster?

Wha’s like us? Let’s start with Estonia, Lithuania, Greece, Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia – however these countries will cruise past us if we ever committed ‘hari kiri’ and walked out on the UK – are we stupid enough to do it….yes I think we are!!!

  8. Weeminger that would mean renting space in data centres around the world, more likely and better renting space in the cloud which in effect is renting space in data centres around the world and is seriously becoming a competitor with the fixed data centre rental, buying cloud space is cheaper and more resilient as data can be transferred/moved out of threatening conditions before any is lost.

    Gearóid1998: I appreciate your efforts.

I was at the Blatterdome last night. The celebrations when Ireland scored were brilliant but we are a poor team and will sadly offer little if we qualify for France. However, COYBIG.

My seat is in the singing section behind the goal in the South Stand. At the last four/five matches this area has displayed banners critical of the FAI and John Delaney, CEO, in particular. The stewarding in the area can be quite heavy-handed. Last night there was an escalation in ‘security’ measures with all entrants to this area being thoroughly frisked before being allowed enter the stadium.

I fear the FAI’s policy will alienate many of the fans in this section. I, for one, would not move to another section. I have been a season ticket holder for a long time now but if the current stewarding policy persists I would sooner watch the match in the pub or at home.

Other physics teachers? Hmmm A guy called Mitchell maybe? Fr Lamb?

Dunno cause I only ever got wee Joe and promptly learned nothing. Not because he was a bad teacher but because Physics was just not my thing at all and I saw no point in it at all.

    He is in his 70’s.

    Mid conversation he announces;

” I joined a new club last week!”

” Really? What kind of club?”

” It’s called the ROMEO club!”

” Hmm The Romeo club? I am not sure I should be asking this but what kind of club is the Romeo club?”

” Retired Old Men Eating Out Club – the ROMEO Club”

” Thank God for that, I thought with a name like that it might have been some other kind of club.”

” We just go out and eat – and talk about it being some other kind of club, Then we go for a snooze – and dream about it being some other type of club. Then we wake up and take our medication – but not the kind of medication you would need if you had been to some other kind of club!”

Then you go on to say…..

From what I hear TV is a bit of a mare for most subscribers and very often doesn’t work. The service is obviously sub standard.

Jumping from ‘what I hear’ to ‘obviously’ is the kind of leap that adds nothing to any kind of meaningful discussion.

  25. There are lots of reasons why a streamed service might be poor. Some of them are outwith the control of those selling the product. For a start – it goes out over the internet which no one organisation owns, and there is no guarantee of uninterrupted routing/service once the streamed data leaves the service provider’s DC. Also, more people tune into a live stream at the same time – so much more contention. Also, people watch on the laptops using a wireless connection – so the last bit of connectivity is at a much lower speed and relies on radio comms which can be ropey for a number of reasons. Bottom line is that there is no way to guarantee the quality of your feed. There are technologies like QOS that can help – but only if configured on every device/router in the path/route, and since this could be any one of a number of routes over the internet then who knows if the network path you’re using has this installed all the way along.

No John I don’t. Read my original again.

In fact if what I really was suggesting was taken up the outcome would have to be investment to deliver as promised. That investment would be justified the greater the buy in.

In terms of future proofing it spreads income across the wider support base to counter reducing crowds.

If there were reasons why you could not be guaranteed an acceptable level of reception then that would have to be part of the price.

It would be part of a greater and tiered Membership Scheme which would require you not be left out.
