Neither Ajax nor Celtic will be overconfident

508

Ajax sit top of the Dutch Eredivisie, ahead of fourth-placed PSV, who picked up three points in the Champions League last night. Four wins and a draw, away to Twente on Saturday, is a near-perfect start to the domestic campaign, although that was only Twente’s second point of the season, if that provides a glimmer of hope.

Form has been less convincing in Europe. An honourable 2-2 draw away to Rapid Vienna was made meaningless by a 2-3 defeat in Amsterdam in the Champions League qualifiers. Ajax then endured a tense two-leg Europa League qualifier against Czechs, Jablonec, which ended in a 1-0 aggregate win. Not that we should be dismissive of anyone on European form.

What will give Ronny Deila room for some encouragement is who Ajax have faced so far in the league. AZ (13th placed), Willem II (15th), NEC (10th) ADO Den Haag (12th), before dropping those points to Twente (16th). All they can do is beat the teams before them, but they will not have been stretched domestically. Even Jablonec are struggling in 6th place in the Czech league. Celtic should be able to provide a test at a higher tempo.

By any measure, Celtic are not without their problems. We’ve not kept a home clean sheet since the opening day of the league campaign against Ross County, and we’ve won only one of our last four away games – and that was against Dundee United who lost four on the bounce. But there’s three points to play for tomorrow, and I doubt either team are taking them for granted.

Is that the same Zagreb that and where we scored three goals late last year?

Canny remember how many we let in mind you.

  2. Hahahaha

Macjay1 and tonydonnely on the same hook. Man this fishing malarkey is easy.

Auldheid you appear to be confirming that the story is real. I hope not.

Your religious zeal about making the obvious not obvious is getting more and more bizarre. But if our SLO has indeed written that letter and if he has responded via Twitter in that way it would really nail how bad the relationship between club and support has got.

I live in hope that of course it is, should be, must be, nonsense.

The supposed letter about the hygiene issue seems like a hoax to me, designed to see if the msm would run with it.

There was an actual real life case of this at Stockport county but rather than the club get involved it was fans sitting in neighbouring seats who left a note and some deodorant for the offender. This was reported in the guardian newspaper a few months back.

I think the real story here is the fact that a national tabloid newspaper clearly follows the twitter account of the likes of etims, Celtic underground etc and no doubt their Hun counterparts too, looking for stories.

I’m starting to lose count of the amount of stories appearing in the msm, not just concerning football, that relate to twitter exchanges.

It’s absolutely lazy and brutal “journalism”.

So much happening in the world today yet this passes for a “news” story in murdoch’s manky Tory tabloid rag.

    Beneath contempt.

Fed up with the new Cqn format.

My wee team Zenit got a good result. Will take one of the Polish boys to watch/endure the big team tomorrow. The Croat should play. Wouldn’t surprise me if we won despite our transfer horrorshow.

  8. Apparently the letter about a smelly fan is an old trick and has done the rounds in various Clubs in the past. Why on earth did our PR Dept not come out and brand it a fake as soon as it hit the MSM.

I know some on here are saying this is petty etc, we have left our supporters open to all sort of ridicule, and you know its going to happen, WHY ? Should have been sorted in a better manner, if at all.

  11. Delaneys,

cheers mate we had a blast, I did indeed miss the game,

although I had found a bar,McMullans ,that was showing the game,

mornings I was still sitting drinking at that time

  12. There’s been a lot said over the last four days or so and it’s getting boring, you either support Celtic as your team or go and support another team there’s no need to watch Celtic if it’s so upsetting.

I remember when I started watching Celtic it wasn’t for the great football that they played, No I just got impressed by a good footballer, when I started to watch Celtic in the 52-53 season they weren’t champions, in fact the Huns won the League that year and we won it the following year, then for the next 12 years we weren’t a threat to anyone, I think most of you posters would have stopped supporting the team by the way you carry on now.

You take the bad as well as the good,It was a long wait but when the good times returned we came back with a hell of a bang, European Cup, nine in a row and a multitude of Cups, but the good times don’t last forever, if they did, I maybe would start a bit of moaning, because it’s boring to watch them winning every year.

But for us to be 2nd in the League after 5 games ain’t that bad a couple of wins over the leaders will bring us back to a point in front remember the team were playing International Football for their Countries and some did a lot of travelling.

Give the blog a break and stop the moaning and shit stirring, we’ll be back,

  13. Neganon2

I don’t follow your reasoning at all.

How is the event, true or false, a sign of how bad things are in terms of relationship between the support and the club?

Let’s hear what you are making up this time to support your world view.

Statement from Joe Miller on behalf of Celtic Former Players Association

“On behalf of all the members of the Celtic Former Players Association, I’d like to extend our best wishes to fernando and his family and we are delighted to take part in this benefit game today. Several years back I was involved in a Rangers v Celtic legends game in Dubai for Tommy Burns and was played the with the same passion and rivalry that the game serves up. The main thing that came from the match was the Respect former players had for each other on and off the park regardless of which team they played for. It’s great to see so many players support Fernando here today and we wish him all the best. Good luck Fernando.”

It’s that time of the month again , no, not p.m.t time

although sometimes i wonder on here.

It’s our Celtic on the peninsula third week of the month

gathering of the clans for all things Celticness, this Sun.

we are having a ( Halfway to Paddy’s day ) as everybody

has been raving about the success of the main Paddy

day celebration when our little town was covered in the

    green and white.

So any of you lurkers going for a drive down to the beach

on Sun. have a visit to the Bay Hotel Mornington and enjoy

our Irish band Shanakee, and some great prizes have been

donated for the raffles, 3 o.clock kick off but be early it’s

    always mobbed with hoopies.

As for the game this thurs. i feel a good result coming our

way, after the recent media assaults which is obviously an

orchestrated campaign i feel the players will be dying to

bust a gut to shove it down some peoples throats.

Nevertheless whatever the result there will be hundreds at

our club on Sun. still singing and dancing after all thats the

    Celtic way.

That sounded like a lecture that my dad gave me about Celtic supporting when I was losing the faith in 1978. He reminded me of the 40s and 50s when he watched us home and away.

God rest him and God bless you.

    See you soon amigo.

  22. Most fans could take the 5 pts gap this early in the season as there is plenty of game time to make up the gap and overtake but when we constantly repeat the same defensive mistakes week in and week out, not learning from the same mistakes from the same players its little wonder fans feel the gap could get wider if we do not sort it out.

  23. GBS 9.47

It may well be a hoax but I thought I saw confirmation it wasn’t on Twitter.

    Even checked the account .

If it is a hoax that the msm swallow and regurgitated then Celtic will be write to get a retraction.

If it’s true that in a crowd of upwards of 35k someone had BO well then down with that sort of thing I say.

Reminds me of story when John Grier was playing keepie uppy with Jinky.

The same should be asked of our media.

Regarding Fernando Ricksen ,it is indeed a great thing that we help anyone in need.

The statement by Joe Miller is empty words.I was in Dubia last year and watch a match between the so called “legends” when the team in blue won, they immediately got together and done the “bouncy”.Joe and his fellow “legends”may have respect for them,I do not,in fact at that moment I wished I had been thirty years younger.
