Rangers destroyed by SFA

503

Huge result from the SFA Judicial Panel Tribunal tonight, absolutely enormous, perhaps the biggest decision ever made in Scottish football history.  Rangers have been banned from signing players over 18-years-old, for a period of 12 months and fined £160k.

For months Scottish football has lived under some huge moral questions; would the combined forces of TV contracts, the Bank of Scotland and the formidable Rangers lobby combine to subvert the meritocratic spirit of sport and see rules written to see Rangers kept afloat.

The SFA Judicial Panel Tribunal made these questions moot.  In the event that Rangers fail to agree a CVA with creditors and emerge as a Newco, and IF that Newco is allowed to inherit the SPL share given up by Rangers, the Newco will be unable to sign any players of 18 years or older.

Although the SPL and SFA are able to transfer Rangers league share to a Newco, player employment contracts are with the current company, so players would not be contracted to any new company.  An SPL Newco would need to compete with 16 and 17-year-olds.

Conversely, there is nothing to stop a new football club, Rangers United, for example, sharing Firhill and applying to the Scottish Football League, from signing players of any age.  A new football club like this would inherit no financial or football punishment from Rangers FC.  Anyone aspiring to fill the gap left by Rangers would do well to navigate their plans in this direction.

In fact, scrub that first sentence, this is the biggest decision ever made in Scottish football history, no perhaps about it.

    Cheers mate!

Well shift nearly finished so if your driving on the M8/M74 over the next half hour and you see and hear a guy with a green jersey screaming at the top of his lungs that’ll be me!!

    “Rangers, bye bye….!!!”

  2. St Stivs,

    thanks for that re-post.

    HT,

superb post mate. Fitting tribute and glad you decided to post it.

Not that it means anything, but FYI, my own favourite Celtic moment is split between 2 occasions.

Me and my 3 younger brothers, 3 rows from the front at Ibrokes with Henrik, Lenny, Joos, Thommo and Jackie etc standing less than 10 feet away from us, celebrating Henriks 50th and our 3rd goal that superb afternoon almost 11 years ago to the day. The 4 of us, arms round each other, jumping about like mentalists, pure unadulterated joy on each of our faces screaming at the top of our lungs in sheer delight. All typical brotherly arguments and disagreements forgotten, united at that moment in our love for Celtic Football Club…..and giving them a doing in their own backyard, as CHAMPIONS! :-)

The other – the first day I took my son to Celtic Park. He was bedecked in Green-and-White head to toe and we scourged Murderwell (as you know the team i dislike most after the huns!).

Watching his wee face as he took it all in, the noise, the smells, the general atmosphere, the game, the goals, the celebrations, gave me a joy that I find hard to put into words.

A different kind of joy from the 3-0 doing we gave the huns, but every bit as much pleasure and pride.

Doesnt get much better than that.

    HAIL! HAIL!

On the Kyle Lafferty thing, don’t know if it’s true but I’m hearing from a R@angers fan at work that there’s a rumour that they’d owe more money to Burnley if he played again…….

  11. hamiltontim , thank you for sharing that . your father sounds like a wonderful man to know and he would be proud to know he’s raised a fine son.

This was always going to be a battle between the SFA and SPL. I have been pushing the club licensing route as the means of the SFA exercising control, but maybe that was too Draconian and left no wriggle room at all.

This decision to ban player registration is a more discrete way of saying who is boss.

It allows a Newco to rise but under conditions set by the SFA that encourage a lower divison start point. I cannot see any of the players currently under contract to Rangers remaining. They are neither affordable and will not accept wages that make them so.

This makes the Firhill option (that I have been saying is the only way forward to shake the dust of Rangers from the feet of a Newco) the best way forward. It will be good for the dark soul of Rangers to have to compete on merit grounds, it might lighten their future existence.

  24. That is a wonderful story from Hamiltontim. That the glory of it is a human being who was loved and is now giving that again as a teacher. As a retired VP of a very special school, my one regret in life is that my father never lived to see me wear my graduation gown. I have had past pupils tell me they had a great time in my class. I have had kids I coached at football saying the same thing. I just wish my dad had been there for my first LP or radio broadcast, or to hear me sing the mass in Clonard. I’ll meet him soon and tell him. I was mum’s favourite and his rival–but all I wanted was to impress him.
