100 years and 2 days on, Celtic aim for another record

390

Fate intervenes in football regularly. Friday, 21 April, marks the 100th anniversary of Celtic’s UK record of 62 league games unbeaten finally ending. Willie Maley’s team won 49 of the 62 games, but took their eye off the ball on the second last game of a long season, at home to Kilmarnock.

The run stood as a European record for 70 years until the great Steaua Bucharest European Cup winning team eclipsed it.

While we will remember one of the early great Celtic teams, with Patsy Gallacher, Alec McNair and Jimmy McMenemy, thoughts inevitably turn to the tantalising prospect of an unbeaten record which would be just as incredible – that of an invincible domestic treble.

100 years and two days after Maley’s team’s great run came to an end, Brendan Rodgers’ team put their aspirations on the line in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden. The weight of history will not burden Brendan or the players, but Sunday is a great opportunity to mark the passing of one incredible record by setting your sights on another.

Great records happen at Celtic. It’s time for another one.

I’ve no axe to grind with Dundee one way or another. Completely understood the decision to sack Paul Hartley. Whatever was going on, the prospect of relegation after losing a play-off against Dundee United was looming large, but good grief, appointing a rookie from the television!

Apart from saying, “Don’t take tax advice from an adult film producer”, I can’t imagine what else he will tell the players with any authority.

Thanks for your response and offer of help. We’re taking advice just now, but not from an employment lawyer who quoted us £8-10k for a mibbe I’ll win it, mibbe I won’t. Right now we’ll probably appeal just to annoy the bassas. The more annoying thing is that original allegations were all unfounded, but banged to rights on the Al Capone strategy…..tax brought him down, or in our case policies, procedures and paperwork. Just as well we have our donkeys to cuddle and share our woes with. They never let us down. Cheers, anyway.

  5. This be nice.

KARAMOKO DEMBELE and his Celtic teammates beat off FC Tokyo, Anderlecht and Ajax to win the Marc Overmars tournament last weekend.

In doing so the highly rated youngster was named the player of the tournament after his fantastic displays helped Celtic to victory.

The young Celtic lad has the world at his feet as he looks to continue his progress with Celtic and hopefully breakthrough to the first team when the manager feels it’s time.

With Brendan Rodgers signing a new four-year deal, if Karamoko does stay with Celtic then the Irishman is more than likely to be the man to give the player his first Celtic start further down the line.

All Labour needs is a strong, respected and charismatic leader, then everything else would fall into place.

Maybe Brendan could take on the job on his day off?

    Paul 67, Auldheid,

I have been looking at Rangers use of DOS and the reasons why the football authorities in Scotland have not punished Rangers to date.

Specifically DOS payments were finally admitted by Rangers to be unlawful with respect to them being non tax exempt. My understanding is that these DOS payments were made to 2 players and included De Boer and Flo.

Given the wee tax case then gives rise to the need for resolution 12, are we to assume that there has been no movement by Celtic to do anything on DOS? I.e. These payments were unlawful and also broke the football rules which require all contractual payments to be declared?

The attached Paul McConville blog covers the dreaded subject of the Juninho EBT. There are still statements that Celtic did not declare the Juninho EBT as contractual to the SPL or SFA. See attached BBC article. The Daily Record also maintain that this Celtic EBT was not declared to the SPL or SFA. Paul McConvilles blog raises the question of Celtic declaring their unkowing breach of football rules in return for the prize of Rangers punishment for their knowing ongoing and deliberate multitude of breaches.

Having said that, I seem to recall that the reason Juninhos EBT was not declared was in some way related to this payment being a carry over from his Middlesborough contract. Do we know more about that and can we say for any certainty that we had no obligation to disclose the Juninho EBT to the football authorities?

If we did indeed have an obligation then why not admit this? Is this in some way a reason that resolution 12 has hit the buffers? It is a very simple cut and dried case that DOS payments and the 5 EBTs were illegal had been used , guilt admitted and these payments were not declared as they should have been at that time. There was a sporting advantage as they were illegal (using the LNS test).

The use of DOS plus the admitted guilt on 5 player EBTs meets the criterion in terms of football rules and the law for punishment now. Why are. Celtic not pursuing it? There is no need to wait on the Supreme Court.

Correct – if the law says Tax Credit for only first two children, we can disagree, however it makes it imperative to have an arrangement, e.g. “rape clause” which addresses special circumstaces; not to do so would be unforgiveable.

The SNP are using the ‘rape clause’ as a squirrel to avoid having to admit that if they wanted to, they could change the law in Scotland to allow any amount of children to be included in Tax Credits.

Many people only hear the word ‘rape’ and jump on the bandwagon, without a clue what the subject entails – of course this is true of almost everything the SNP say and do.

  18. Juninho’s EBT was also part of his Middlesburgh contract. Celtic did not pay into it during his time at club but after he left Celtic having played 12 games as per the terms of his loan agreement. Tax was then paid on Celtic’s part to HMRC with HMRC’s agreement.

This point is irrelevent when comparing to the hun EBT’s.

Teresa May puts doubt in my mind with regards to references of ‘reptilians’ disguised as humans being the actual rulers of the world.I had never entertained there being a grain of truth in these claims but the more I see May the more i’m coming round to the idea.A scaly,fork-tongued creature with lizardly quirks.Bet she’s cold to the touch.

  20. SCANIEL 1.41,

MAKE SURE !!!!! That ANY policies and/or procedures that were used against your good lady, ALSO APPLIED to every other employee ?

for example, i was sacked over a Medical Questionnaire. At the time that I was forced to complete it, unknown to myself, I was lied to by my line manager, who told me that it was Council Policy. i stupidly believed him.

5 years later, and 10 days after I was sacked, this same line manger ADMITTED to me over the phone that “He had NEVER been issued with a Medical form”.

That is when I carried out my own investigation and discovered another 7 Council employees who ALSO had NEVER been issued with a medical form.

Thats just one example of the evidence that I uncovered in my case.

All the best, but let me know if you think I can help ?

    KTF.

    MWD,

As reliable as an underwater hair dryer but the MSM reports from 2012 state that Celtic did not declare the payment to the football authorities.

If you use the LNS sham as the test and assume the payment was not declared when it should have been then Juninho was imperfectly registered. However his tax was eventually paid regardless of whether it fell on the black or white side of lawful. That being the case Celtics use of the EBT would only fall in with the imperfectly registered category… not the illegal part

If we didn’t declare it why not declare that now on the basis of the LNS sham test and let Rangers burn on the illegal DOS and EBT payments that we know using the second part of the LNS test mean that they gained a sporting advantage.

Rangers paid players without paying a bean in tax. Celtic may or may not have declared Juninho EBT to the Football authorities but they gained no sporting advantage as they paid the tax. What I would like to know is if we did not declare it? Why not and did we subsequently declare it.

Surely it is in Celtics interest to state the facts.
