A confident striker and a scared defender

965

John Guidetti has put himself out there by letting us know he’ll score a hat-trick in next month’s League Cup semi-final.  I’m not normally an advocate of showing confidence, if not contempt, for opponents prior to a game, but Guidetti’s comments come against a rich canvas.

The player is in a rut and will be feeling the weight of disappointment with each passing chance.  He is a goal-scorer, he’ll score again, but he needs to find the spark to fire-up the second part of his season.

You will remember Kenny Miller ran his guts out in his early months as a Celtic player but it was not until a game against oldco Rangers in September that his landmark first Celtic goal arrived.  Kris Commons has been a scoring sensation throughout his time at the club apart from his second season, when he took until April before scoring, a delightful chip over the oldco keeper.

Ahead of both of those games I knew it was all going to come together for Miller and Commons.  John Guidetti has set himself a target.  He will probably score before that game but he knows how important it is to perform at Hampden.  He is good enough to deliver on this one, don’t bet against him.

Contrast John’s comments to those last week from newco defender, Steven Smith, who said, “The fans will probably be dreading [the Celtic game]because in the big games this season, we haven’t done well. Everybody has got their opinions and are entitled to them.

“But with the results we have been having and the way we have been playing, I don’t think we can think about it too much.”

You will be hard pushed to find a clearer example of the language of failure: “dreading”, “haven’t done well” and “the way we’ve been playing”.  You normally need to work a bit to find a player’s insecurities.  It’s good of John Guidetti to mark his card on what to expect. Give me a confident striker over a scared defender any day.

The Second Annual Celtic Supporter’s Féile is on the weekend of Friday 30 January 30 – Sunday 1 February in Philadelphia.  The events include live music each day, the US premier of The Asterisk Years, with a Q&A with Paul Larkin and Graham Wilson of Beyond the Waves podcast, as well as live coverage of our first ever meeting with newco Rangers in the League Cup semi-final.

You can find more information, including how to book, here.

  3. According to twitter, both Man U and Arsenal are both in for VVD. £25m , not a penny less, we should be charging. That will allow us to pay £1m for a fandabbydozy striker from outer mongolia who will sell on for £3billion pounds the following season. HH the Celtic Board. They should hang their heads in shame. IMHO.

Anger, Pain, Desperation. We have to utilise it.

Our fans are all over the place. For the last 4 years we’ve been beaten, humiliated, dragged through the mud and left for dead. We don’t know who to trust. We’ve been marginalised, ignored, patronised and lied to.(eh)

Enough is enough. We can’t just carry on accepting this as our lot.

We don’t agree on every aspect of our club. From the boardroom to the pitch, from our traditions to our future. We have different and conflicting opinions on what is best for the club from business to tactics. There’s nothing wrong with that. It breeds debate and analysis, arguments. It shows a passion that you care about your opinion because you care about your club.

In 2012 we came too close. (Mmmmm nope your club die). The only thing that saved the club, Us.???? We bought tickets and sold out stadiums. We marched in the streets to the doors of our oppressors and demanded justice. It’s a constant cycle we seem to go through. Overwhelming strength and force that slowly ebbs away as we become lazy, apathetic, content. Until we end up in another crisis and the cycle starts again.

Enough of the boom and bust in our boardroom and in the stands.

If even for just a moment we could capture that feeling between us back in 2012 we’d be unstoppable. You look to your left, and your right, and see thousands of Bears who are all there for the same reason as you. No agendas, no conflict, no distrust. Only there to see the Rangers.

What do we do now? F****d if I know. But our options are extremely limited…really…HaHa.

Suit yourself. I don’t have a problem with anyone on this wonderful blog. Thought I would give you a wee bit of praise, but, maybe an error in my part. Take care. I thought we were better than that, but, your call. We are still Celtic Supporters.

I’m hoping we can hang on to Kris and all regulars at least until end of season

Agree with most that we need a playmaking mid in. I also feel we generally lack a bit of steel or toughness and that is usually something that comes with experience and reputation. We are unlikely to have one coming through the ranks so we need to bring one in.

It was good to see so many of the development bhoys getting a wee run v PSV and hopefully more of same v Prague tomorrow nite. I doubt any will be ready to add steel just yet, so for me buying in is important in this window.

Most of all we need to find a balance in team that delivers more good chances to our striker ( I feel modern game has 1 up top and we should move to that model) however, the players operating around the guy up top, must be comfortable with pass and move and not shy about taking a shot and stepping into the up top role at times as game develops (kris doesn’t hang about in that regard and it works for him)

Any number of combinations will fail if we continue to give the ball away and fail to press opponents when they are on the ball. That requires technique and energy with a decent amount of pace to cover ground. At the moment I’m seeing a combination of pressing from Johansen but others inclined to sit and hold in a line. It seems disjointed and ineffective.

Watching games this season, it is clear that giving away possession is killing us and it always happens in the same areas of the pitch. We were getting away with that in Scotland for a while, but teams here are getting sharper and more seem able to retain ball when we give it away. A good thing for the game overall, but we must be smarter and move the ball quickly and effectively and retain in attacking positions. Giving it away is part of the human frailty element of our game, however, a team like Celtic should be doing it a lot less than our domestic opponents and we must work hard to improve that aspect pronto.

Some early signs of what RD trying to achieve in evidence, when we see flowing passing and movement eg v Killie. but too many square pegs in round holes and manager needs to be more pragmatic until he can unleash at team capable of playing his way for full 90

He needs backing by the board and he needs backing, strong vocal backing, by all of us.

I’m sure he will get that or, we go around the houses again
