A confident striker and a scared defender

965

John Guidetti has put himself out there by letting us know he’ll score a hat-trick in next month’s League Cup semi-final.  I’m not normally an advocate of showing confidence, if not contempt, for opponents prior to a game, but Guidetti’s comments come against a rich canvas.

The player is in a rut and will be feeling the weight of disappointment with each passing chance.  He is a goal-scorer, he’ll score again, but he needs to find the spark to fire-up the second part of his season.

You will remember Kenny Miller ran his guts out in his early months as a Celtic player but it was not until a game against oldco Rangers in September that his landmark first Celtic goal arrived.  Kris Commons has been a scoring sensation throughout his time at the club apart from his second season, when he took until April before scoring, a delightful chip over the oldco keeper.

Ahead of both of those games I knew it was all going to come together for Miller and Commons.  John Guidetti has set himself a target.  He will probably score before that game but he knows how important it is to perform at Hampden.  He is good enough to deliver on this one, don’t bet against him.

Contrast John’s comments to those last week from newco defender, Steven Smith, who said, “The fans will probably be dreading [the Celtic game]because in the big games this season, we haven’t done well. Everybody has got their opinions and are entitled to them.

“But with the results we have been having and the way we have been playing, I don’t think we can think about it too much.”

You will be hard pushed to find a clearer example of the language of failure: “dreading”, “haven’t done well” and “the way we’ve been playing”.  You normally need to work a bit to find a player’s insecurities.  It’s good of John Guidetti to mark his card on what to expect. Give me a confident striker over a scared defender any day.

The Second Annual Celtic Supporter’s Féile is on the weekend of Friday 30 January 30 – Sunday 1 February in Philadelphia.  The events include live music each day, the US premier of The Asterisk Years, with a Q&A with Paul Larkin and Graham Wilson of Beyond the Waves podcast, as well as live coverage of our first ever meeting with newco Rangers in the League Cup semi-final.

You can find more information, including how to book, here.

    Bolleaux’s.

Unnecessary use of the apostrophe and the ‘s’ there.

Should read, bolleaux, eg, in a sentence, joie de bolleaux = the joy of bollocks, or beaucoup de bolleaux = plenty of balls, big balls.

As for Bolleaux Nouvelles – the possessive here is Andy Murray’s.

Be happy for us to get guidetti full time..keep virgil and bring in another centre half and cover at left back.

Id be very happy with that until the summer.

  3. I went to primary school with Johnny Doyle’s son(year below I think). Got me a flyer with all the squad signatures. It was a printed copy but I was still over the moon. Good lad.

They lived near my cousins and my secondary school was beside the cemetery. We all left class that day to watch the cortege. Very sad day which I remember vividly. There was a touch of excitement due to the Celtic players and management arriving, which I still feel guilty about. Only defence is that we were 12/13 at the time. Frank McGarvey’s brother was a teacher there at the time if memory serves.

I think Adam Matthews’ contract is up in the summer. And I doubt he’ll renew.

He’ll be outa here like a scalded cat, eager to ply his trade where he doesn’t wear a target on his back, and the laws of the game are properly applied.

    From the DR,

    Anthony Stokes tweets new hair

HE’S not bad with the ball at his feet, and now Anthony Stokes is good in the hair too.

The formerly balding Celtic striker has been having treatment at a Glasgow hair studio.

And he’s so chuffed with how it’s going that he tweeted a photo of the results to his 127,000 followers, with the message: “Barnet is almost back!”

Stokesy, 26, is enjoying a winter break in the Canaries with the rest of the Hoops squad.

But when he’s at home, he advertises KSL Hair with fiancee Debbie Lawlor, who goes there for extensions.

Hoops team-mate Leigh Griffiths is also on the firm’s books.

Stokesy said: “It’s only started to become more noticeable in the past two years, so I thought it was time to do something about it. I believe KSL Hair are the team to sort this issue once and for all for me.

“They understand what you’re going through.”

KSL offer treatments including Follicle Unit Extraction, where hair from elsewhere on the patient’s body is transplanted on to the scalp. And Stokesy’s Twitter fans were impressed with his new look.

One told him his barnet was “looking braw” while another added cheekily: “Now you’ve got a second chance, don’t ruin it by getting highlights again.”

  9. This is probably an unpopular view but I don’t really see the point of the advert in this Sunday’s Herald.

Does it make them any more or less dead to people?

I think they are dead so my opinion hasn’t changed. Those who feel differently won’t be persuaded by any statements from Celtic Supporters.

    I guess it’s a demonstration of freedom

Of speech and it gives a voice to Celtic supporters that is muted by mainstream media but for me it is unlikely to change any minds..

I’d be interested to know how much a full page advert costs?

  26. CultsBhoy…………………I think we get that you don’t want to do/say anything. That’s an option.

  27. Cults..,

I think it is addressing the problem that is confusing many many Celtic supporters, the SMSM and football authorities constantly professing the lie, the ASA backing up the lie. This propaganda is winning and is unchallenged, this statement in print will clarify for many the actual status especially when neither the authorities or ASA challenge the statement.

  28. I contributed towards the Glasgow Herald statement, it will be the truth in regards to the nonsense spouted around Sevco and their status, what’s wrong with a statement telling the truth in a MSM quality ? Isnt that what we are supposed to be reading in the press, the truth !

The biggest preposterous guff i have read is that apparently a statement in the Glasgow Herald will lead to violence at the up and coming semi final game

I work in Lanarkshire in a large warehouse with over 1000 workforce, mainly males, we have various sections of the Sevconian support, for the last three years we have heard mainly from the Orange end of the spectrum spout angrily and aggressively about the attacks on their culture and their club, the undercurrent of violence amongst this group is palpable, i suspect if you add alcohol to that potent mix it will become explosive on Feb 1st, my advice is to avoid this group wherever they may gather on Feb1st
