A confident striker and a scared defender

965

John Guidetti has put himself out there by letting us know he’ll score a hat-trick in next month’s League Cup semi-final.  I’m not normally an advocate of showing confidence, if not contempt, for opponents prior to a game, but Guidetti’s comments come against a rich canvas.

The player is in a rut and will be feeling the weight of disappointment with each passing chance.  He is a goal-scorer, he’ll score again, but he needs to find the spark to fire-up the second part of his season.

You will remember Kenny Miller ran his guts out in his early months as a Celtic player but it was not until a game against oldco Rangers in September that his landmark first Celtic goal arrived.  Kris Commons has been a scoring sensation throughout his time at the club apart from his second season, when he took until April before scoring, a delightful chip over the oldco keeper.

Ahead of both of those games I knew it was all going to come together for Miller and Commons.  John Guidetti has set himself a target.  He will probably score before that game but he knows how important it is to perform at Hampden.  He is good enough to deliver on this one, don’t bet against him.

Contrast John’s comments to those last week from newco defender, Steven Smith, who said, “The fans will probably be dreading [the Celtic game]because in the big games this season, we haven’t done well. Everybody has got their opinions and are entitled to them.

“But with the results we have been having and the way we have been playing, I don’t think we can think about it too much.”

You will be hard pushed to find a clearer example of the language of failure: “dreading”, “haven’t done well” and “the way we’ve been playing”.  You normally need to work a bit to find a player’s insecurities.  It’s good of John Guidetti to mark his card on what to expect. Give me a confident striker over a scared defender any day.

The Second Annual Celtic Supporter’s Féile is on the weekend of Friday 30 January 30 – Sunday 1 February in Philadelphia.  The events include live music each day, the US premier of The Asterisk Years, with a Q&A with Paul Larkin and Graham Wilson of Beyond the Waves podcast, as well as live coverage of our first ever meeting with newco Rangers in the League Cup semi-final.

You can find more information, including how to book, here.

Here’s my take – yes he’s a great talent but he is so rarely available that he is a non contributor and possibly a detractor from team building. I’m a believer in fielding first 11 whenever possible.

The other thing about JF is that I watched Rysn Fraser at Aberdeen for a season doing what JF should be doing better and doing it every week for a season and doing it for a fraction of the wage.

Bournemouth also saw that and bought him after a season.

I actually feel there are other guys on teams throughout the league who can do it at s fraction of the cost. Mackay Steven would be my preference. Especially if we punted JF and pick GMS up on the cheap.

Btw – hope you are keeping your chin up pal!

Well morning bhoys I doubt that there are many free transfers in the market at the moment so there is nothing really going on at Celtic.Rony talking this morning about reducing the player pool size for me that is a step in the right direction. However,we have to find teams who both want and can afford our duds not an easy challenge. H.H.

Big favour to ask from anyone on here with a bit of knowledge of NE England.

My nephew starts a placement next month at P&G in Seaton Delaval, just North of Whitley Bay.

    He’s looking for short-term accommodation,say,about three-four months,and would like some info on the area,etc.

I’ve suggested he look at the various roomshare websites that have sprung up recently, but he disnae want to end up in the NE equivalent of Kilwinning, haha!

For the avoidance of doubt, the young fella is nothing like his uncle, being a quiet, gentle and laid-back type. So no need to worry about local house prices plummeting!

    Well…where will I begin…..?

    Right.

I saw that, the ‘bored’ were going to cut the quality in the dug-out and on the pitch when, MO’N left the club so – I chucked it.

If I where conceited….I’d qualify for all the cliques on here.

Nah, seriously…If I was conceited, I’d describe myself as a visionary.

    That’s right, a visionary.

A visionary who had the vision to see the car being driven towards a slow car-crash by, DD, PL the ‘bored’ etc…so I thought – kidd-on whoever ye want but – it wont be me.

So, I got out – thats what I did.

  8. I’m 47 years old – the only opinion I really take account of is my own.

Perhaps the statement will serve a purpose with younger people who are unclear about the meaning of liquidation. I suspect host the Herald itself will not be the vehicle for that but it provides a reason to flush it through social media- I’m seeing this already by email , facebook etc.

However I remain convinced that opinions and views on this issue are quite entrenched.

If it enlightens Crltic fans who still refer to Old Firm etc then that will be a good thing.

I’ll be interested to see the impact it has…

Bawsman – if you honestly believe that I don’t say anything on this matter you are very much mistaken. I can assure you I am very confident in my views and have no problem sharing them.

  10. proudbhoy,

If we were going to hear anything we’d have heard it by now, be a good mushroom :)

  11. I think that the ‘statement’ is more of a ‘statement’ about the egotistical dreamers of CQN so that they can have some sort of memento from the Herald to pin on their fridge doors.

If the pushers of the ‘statement’ were really targer-driven then, they should present the ‘statement’ to the directors of Celtic FC and ask them to sign it.

  12. If people thought believed or even considered that a statement in the Glasgow Herald would revolutionise the SFA and scottish football, it beggars belief

The SFA will be changed internally by votes from the clubs including Celtic, nothing else

” goodness what an ugly wart you have on your face!” Exclaims the shopkeeper.

The woman gets upset and demands an apology or she will take steps to damage the store’s ability to trade.

What has the shopkeeper to do?

Apologise for stating the blatantly obvious fact of the warts existence or lie to preserve his business.

    CHALLENGE THE LIE

I would suggest the following quote from James Forrest’s latest ‘On Fields of Green’ article is another reason we should be boycotting the sevco farce on 2 Feb…….

“Yeah, maybe it is. Maybe it’s all smoke and mirrors. But it looks an awful lot like a well-thought out campaign to re-establish a shabby brand no right thinking person wants anything to do with, the one that fills up the casualty wards and splits our game into two spheres of influence, to the detriment of every other club, the “partnership” that the media miss, that Sevco clearly needs but is a plague on Celtic’s house.” …….

Also, I was surprised no one commented on the fact that, when we wrote to the Board with regard to Dungcaster’s statement, John Paul’s reply was “his own opinion” …. !!??

  24. Exact nature of the shopkeeper’s till takings are unclear but agencies are involved to resolve a dozen or so issues.
