A confident striker and a scared defender

965

John Guidetti has put himself out there by letting us know he’ll score a hat-trick in next month’s League Cup semi-final.  I’m not normally an advocate of showing confidence, if not contempt, for opponents prior to a game, but Guidetti’s comments come against a rich canvas.

The player is in a rut and will be feeling the weight of disappointment with each passing chance.  He is a goal-scorer, he’ll score again, but he needs to find the spark to fire-up the second part of his season.

You will remember Kenny Miller ran his guts out in his early months as a Celtic player but it was not until a game against oldco Rangers in September that his landmark first Celtic goal arrived.  Kris Commons has been a scoring sensation throughout his time at the club apart from his second season, when he took until April before scoring, a delightful chip over the oldco keeper.

Ahead of both of those games I knew it was all going to come together for Miller and Commons.  John Guidetti has set himself a target.  He will probably score before that game but he knows how important it is to perform at Hampden.  He is good enough to deliver on this one, don’t bet against him.

Contrast John’s comments to those last week from newco defender, Steven Smith, who said, “The fans will probably be dreading [the Celtic game]because in the big games this season, we haven’t done well. Everybody has got their opinions and are entitled to them.

“But with the results we have been having and the way we have been playing, I don’t think we can think about it too much.”

You will be hard pushed to find a clearer example of the language of failure: “dreading”, “haven’t done well” and “the way we’ve been playing”.  You normally need to work a bit to find a player’s insecurities.  It’s good of John Guidetti to mark his card on what to expect. Give me a confident striker over a scared defender any day.

The Second Annual Celtic Supporter’s Féile is on the weekend of Friday 30 January 30 – Sunday 1 February in Philadelphia.  The events include live music each day, the US premier of The Asterisk Years, with a Q&A with Paul Larkin and Graham Wilson of Beyond the Waves podcast, as well as live coverage of our first ever meeting with newco Rangers in the League Cup semi-final.

You can find more information, including how to book, here.

“I’m 47 years old – the only opinion I really take account of is my own.”

Fair enough but it does beg the question: From where do you get your `own` opinion?

The main reason I contributed to the statement to appear in The Sunday Herald, was in the hope that it may change the perception of Scottish football supporters who ‘perpetuate the myth’. That includes some in our own support.I know the closed sevco minds will never change.

  4. Kevj,

All these great ideas you have come up with, like writing to the board, can I ask what replies you’ve had to the many letters you must have written by now ?

Something that I have occasionally considered. Why is it that you are able to see through the sham of Celtic`s ` real` policy so much more clearly than anyone else? Assuming, of course, that your view is accurate.

If you followed Celtic the length and breadth of the country for 44 years-and I assume you were at least out of your nappies before your first game-but chucked it when MON left, when is your bus pass due?

Miss Prestonpans not happy at not getting a ticket against them, even said about giving up her ST.

Now if I was giving up my ST it would be about the board’s handling of GB etc or the mince I’ve been watching this season but certainly not about failing to get a ticket against them.

    Make it real again?????

    Really?

I’ll stand behind you wi a rolled up newspaper pouring pish down your legs, tell you there’s 33,000 when you can’t move, then say there’s no money for new players.

As real as that, or shall I sell you pish soaked spam rolls with you macaroon bar and spearrment chewing gum?

We only started being a proper version of what Celtic should be when Fergus re-ignited the charity function we had lost for generations (apart from letting clergy in for free).

  13. Although as ugly as she was the shopkeeper was probably glad of the custom she generated due to loss of his regular clientele for the overpriced product and lack of quality he was quite happy to fob off to his longstanding customers over the years

Most of his customers signed up for some of his products before they can out only to find that the product was on loan and only had a shelf life of six months to a year

I dont write letters to the bored – plenty of folk on here have, and….nothing.

I blank the bored financially – thats all they want you for.

To cut a long story short….how many schools, soup-kitchens etc have the billionaires on the bored built for the poor folk of Africa in the same way that the wonderful folk on CQN have. The CQNrs – Celtic supporters in general are the salt of the earth and my frustration at the way they are treated, leads to me calling them sheep, dicks, mugs, clowns etc….it’s all because the Celtic fans – have to – realise, that they live in a glass-house, the problems within their own house have to be fixed 1st – before they think about anything else.

The Celtic bored are – Robin Hoods in reverse.

    My approach – fluck thum!

But your telling us this morning what the ad writers should do, take the statement to the Celtic board and get them to sign it, you could have done that, no ?

You offer loads of advice on what “other people” should do but do nothing yourself, nada, zero, nothing see what I’m driving at here ?

When you take action maybe some might pay attention to you, no season ticket is inaction not action, so I can’t count that.

What actions have you taken ? Bar come on here and dog people who have and are taking action ?

  21. As for how many soup-kitchens the billionaires have built, like me you have no idea ho many, it might be none but you don’t actually know that do you, your simply lying when you make such claims, so I can call you an agenda driven liar base on that statement alone, and I might just do that in future.

  22. Kevj..,

Base on your lies about the number of soup kitchens the billionaires built, I’m happy to call you a liar over your other claim to have any experience of following Celtic anywhere.
